Right in the center of Banon, one of Haute Provence's many quaint hilltop villages, Les Vins au Vert has prime sidewalk seating (just 2 tables, so come before lunchtime), a robust cellar of natural local wines, and an indulgent menu of French staples: cheese plates, charcuterie, and larger plates. By noon, the indoor cellar seating is packed full and buzzing with locals. We sat outside before their lunchtime rush, sipped some refreshing wines that the owner picked for us (he looked at me and said "aha...blanc pour madame!" and came pack with a zippy glass of Viognier). He also taught me some new French wine vocabulary, noting that "frais" (fresh) is more polite than "acide" (acidic). I envy the folks who can stroll here from home, and sit here all afternoon. They are pretty clued into the local art scene and have regular receptions and even some live music on special occassions, I *think*. The owner is just the kind of wine nerd you want to consult with. He's very softspoken and sweet, and knows each wine like it's his beloved child. Only catch is, their liquor license doesn't allow them to sell wine without food, so you're "forced" to eat. I can think of worse things! You'll feel hyper-cool and quasi-local if you drink here. Recommended!
