With a newly earned Michelin star, we should have known we were in for a treat. But frankly we've been fooled before so we never actually know what to expect. But these guys star was well earned... What stood out for us was an excellent smoked eel dish and probably the best risotto I've ever had (and I've had a lot of risotto). The runner up was the dessert- closely followed by a dizzying selection of local wines (did I mention we did the wine pairing)... The ambiance was upscale but still friendly- we could tell a lot of the diners were return visitors. To top it off, the owner/chef came out and greeted us (in English thankfully) following the meal. Out of the dozen or so Michelin starred restaurants we experienced across France this go-round I'd say they would be in the top 3. Not to be missed in Marseille!

Loved the poulpes (little octopuses) which were tasty. The mange-tout were all right, nicely fried up, but I'm not a big fan of those salty little fish. The panisses are great: little chickpea patties, very simple, fried crispy and tasty. Apparently, they're a local specialty. I'm glad I tried them at Gilda's, because they were excellent here, and I can totally imagine someone messing them up. A perfect accompaniment to the other food. Gilda knows how to fry up some good food. Definitely a fond food memory of Marseille.

Chez Gilda was recommended by my boyfriend's friend, and I'm so glad we got to try it.The prices were also reasonable and the people so friendly. The chef was warm, friendly and made excellent food. His co-owner made amazing hummus that I will absolutely dream about going back for. This place is a must for anyone who visits Marseille. The jumbo shrimps were cooked perfectly, as was everything else we ordered (aka just about the entire menu), like the calamari and the octopus. We washed everything down with beer and white wine, and got to eat outside on a perfect late summer's eve. The restaurant is tiny, as there's limited seating outside and a counter where you can stand and eat inside, but it was clean and vibrant.
