With only one caveat, that this is largely Tunisian food whereas Yelp only has an option for Moroccan food, Ghomrassen may provide one of the most amazing values for the money in this North African food capital of France. I sincerely found this one of the most wonderful meals I had in the entire country.
I was hungry enough to order appetizers, a main course, and a dessert, to try things I'd never be able to experience back in Houston (and that is difficult to say) and to compare them with some versions I've tried to make. The meat and egg brik was quite huge and extremely well fried, just on the edge of greasy but unbelievably crispy and the filling was hot and juicy. Merguez is obtainable in the US, but this version had a more pronounced hot and spicy taste and tasted great with the hearty couscous and its rich vegetable broth. The owner brought out some harissa on request and it is the "Le Cap Bon" brand that is commonly considered the most authentic, and that I now have in my home kitchen. The basbousa (Oriental cake) is a favorite in my home kitchen but Ghomrassen's version is as unctuous as a Turkish sekerpare (still one of the most incredibly decadent desserts I've ever eaten), its syrup actually making the semolina more fuller-tasting while distributing its starch perfectly within the syrup to thicken it to an incredibly smooth texture, and perfectly portioned to not be dripping in syrup whatsoever. My own version can't hope to be as smooth-tasting as this.
The owner is also extremely friendly and communicates very well in English and French, and told stories about his Algerian heritage. He seems to genuinely like his customers and was curious about where I came from. As much as I want to further explore North African food options, including Moroccan which I was disappointed not to be able to try, next time I am in Marseille, Ghomrassen is tempting to just come back to again and again. Especially the couscous méchoui looks and sounds so rich and mouth-watering that I'd want to try that next time.
If you want lots of delicious food for not much money, Ghomrassen is simply unmatchable in Marseille. read more
