Date of visit: 9/4/2024…read more What a let down! We had high hope for this restaurant as it was our last meal in Helsinki and hubby had had enough of eating salmon and shrimps and reindeers lol. Anyways, almost all orders were a mess! Hubby's orders: - Pastis escargots gratinated with Roquefort: EXTREMELY SALTY! The sauce was inedible! - Foie Gras brioche with apple and thyme chutney: it was a slice of liver, lightly cooked (pan fried) served on a piece of brioche. Def not how we usually had it in France. Not a fan! - Grilled flank steak with roasted carrot and sauce bavaroise: Not good! Meat was neither tender nor juicy. The sauce was also bad. Hubby knows his way around his meat so when he says no good, it's better to stay away from it! - Pastis truffle fries: the fries on its own was fantastic, the sauce it comes with, however, was really REALLY salty to the point it was inedible! I ordered the 4-course Menu du Chef (set menu): - Tartar ala Pastis with egg yolk and dijonnaise: shrimp tartar. it was ok. - Chantarelle soup with pickled chantarelles and pepper oil: delicious! - Poached cod with savoy cabbage and creamy tomato sauce: fish was perfectly cooked (confit). Sauce was ok, again a bit on the salty side. - Dessert was poached pear with some cream on top: not a fan. We ended up just eating the poached pear for not wanting to waste it. Service was great. When asked why some dishes were extremely salty, our server just answered that's how Finnish people like their food: with a lot of salt! We were like REALLYYYYYY?!?!?!?! Oh well!

This is a must visit!!

Got the autumn course meal which was rabbit rillette followed with slow cooked moose then cheese with jam and finished with chocolate ganache dessert. The rabbit was ok but the rest were outstanding. My friends got the reindeer, meatballs, and liver which were all incredibly delicious also (I actually preferred the taste of all 3 of these over the moose but had to try moose since it's rare to find). If I were to go back I'd get the goat cheese salad followed with the reindeer main course. You won't be disappointed!

We were unable to get a reservation online so we decided to see if we can walk in and we were warmly received. We were given a very comfortable table in the center of the dining room. We opted to order the steak and fries, as well as escargot and the smoked trout. The bread service was also outstanding. We paired our meal with a cocktail and a glass of wine. Service was very friendly and helpful. We then finished with an apple dessert. We almost returned the second night, but we were too tired from sightseeing all day. I highly recommend this location and would definitely return in the future.

All the in house beer info is also easily found on the wall and the menu is simple; mostly based on their also homemade sausages. Not wanting a full meal, I went with the Poutine which has all the things I love - sausage, fries, cheese curds, and a light and slightly tart gravy. The people behind old favorites La Torrefazzione and Fratello have moved beyond serving good coffee…read moreand brunches to also expand into beer and proper restaurant food. In the space of a previous garlic restaurant they have opened up a restaurant where they serve up simple dishes from nice ingredients. The menu is refreshingly short, all in all around 10 dishes out of which 5-6 are mains and then there are a few snack dishes and some dessert. The food I had has been very good, uncomplicated but with flavors that really fit together well. In addition to serving good food they also brew their own beer on site as well as serve other good craft beer. The beer is very nice and a lot of interesting types of beer can be sampled (served in either small (0.2l) or regular (0.4l)). Nice and friendly service adds to the appeal of this place. Orders are places at the bar so can at times be a bit busy but not really an issue. The place is also nicely designed in a mix of rustic wood and white tiles behind the bar. The improvement would be to try to reduce the noise level in the bigger room as it got rather loud (and the tables are big so people sit fairly far from each other resulting in louder and louder conversations).

The price level is affordable - I'm happy to spend my own money there as well. I think I've been close to 10 times in the restaurant now, and I have never left unhappy. I would recommend that you let yourself be pampered by the staff. The daily menus can't go wrong, and the wine recommendations tend to be spot on. My understanding is that they have a very wide selection of wines, so if you are interested in choosing yourself you can probably find something interesting. So why 4 stars and not 5? As someone else also wrote, although the food is superb it's not really memorable. I can probably only name 3-4 dishes out of all the dishes I have had there. I've also come to notice that some of the dishes are repeated if you go there again within 1-2 months. That's been a bit disappointing. But Muru is a superb place where you really get value for money and I definitely recommend it.

The service was outstanding. Our server was cool, had a good attitude and presented everything in style. I loved his wine selections as pairings but if you go and love wine, ask to see the handwritten list. It is crazy for being so far in the frozen north. The owner keeps them stacked in his office and only for those willing to ask. A super good spot with lots of character that is certainly worth a stop when you are freezing your balls off in the rugged north.
