Inside, the café has a cozy, lively, and relaxing atmosphere that makes it an inviting place to spend time. The café offers a salmon soup buffet along with a wide selection of pastries, sandwiches, and salads. The restaurant, on the other hand, is well known for its reindeer dishes. I really loved the location, which is perfect to visit during a day of sightseeing or as a stop between exploring Helsinki. Personally, I enjoyed the café more than the restaurant. While it isn't fine dining, the café offers healthy, simple dishes and a great variety of local favorites. The restaurant has a good selection of menu options; however, aside from the reindeer dish, I found the other items to be quite salty. The service throughout our visit was very good.

Date of visit: 9/4/2024…read more What a let down! We had high hope for this restaurant as it was our last meal in Helsinki and hubby had had enough of eating salmon and shrimps and reindeers lol. Anyways, almost all orders were a mess! Hubby's orders: - Pastis escargots gratinated with Roquefort: EXTREMELY SALTY! The sauce was inedible! - Foie Gras brioche with apple and thyme chutney: it was a slice of liver, lightly cooked (pan fried) served on a piece of brioche. Def not how we usually had it in France. Not a fan! - Grilled flank steak with roasted carrot and sauce bavaroise: Not good! Meat was neither tender nor juicy. The sauce was also bad. Hubby knows his way around his meat so when he says no good, it's better to stay away from it! - Pastis truffle fries: the fries on its own was fantastic, the sauce it comes with, however, was really REALLY salty to the point it was inedible! I ordered the 4-course Menu du Chef (set menu): - Tartar ala Pastis with egg yolk and dijonnaise: shrimp tartar. it was ok. - Chantarelle soup with pickled chantarelles and pepper oil: delicious! - Poached cod with savoy cabbage and creamy tomato sauce: fish was perfectly cooked (confit). Sauce was ok, again a bit on the salty side. - Dessert was poached pear with some cream on top: not a fan. We ended up just eating the poached pear for not wanting to waste it. Service was great. When asked why some dishes were extremely salty, our server just answered that's how Finnish people like their food: with a lot of salt! We were like REALLYYYYYY?!?!?!?! Oh well!

Pricy restaurant in a very nice settlement, often crowded by big groups of both Finns or tourists…read more One of those restaurants where food is well-prepared, well-presented, good wine list, but the service side is completely forgotten; slow, unorganized I felt completely forgotten, I needed to almost shout to get the attention of a waitress, since all the waiters in the room seem to avoid checking and make eye-contact with customers. First several delicious starters(listed below in my personal preference order, being the first three must-try): -Beer marinated beef with garlic mayonnaise (Pure perfection!) -Finnish goats milk Gruyere with currant wine gelé ( the most innovative, great combination and very balance taste) -Vichyssoise with asparagus (very well done, but) -Cured lamb tartar with malt bread -Peppered and lightly salted salmon with pickled cucumber -Herring caviar seasoned with sherry, new potatoes Main dish: -Grilled whitefish with lemon risotto and crayfish sauce (Although the whitefish and the crafish sauce were finely done and they worked wonderfully together, the lemon risotto spoiled the dish.Risotto was undercooked and hard) Dessert: - Lemon Cremè Brûlée (really unbalanced on the taste it seems the dishes with ölemon do not work well in this restaurant) However I tried a little bit of my friend's choice: -Vanilla soup with poached rhubarb and organic strawberry sorbet (This one was a delicious combination) Time between starters and main dishes waiting over 30 minutes!!! One importan point in restaurant business is to end the serving of a table. Once you have started the table, you should be very concentrated on the demands of the table till the full meal ends. You cannot have more than 5 minutes between one dish and next one, apart from desserts, since they are ordered afterwards. However, many of the desserts are already made and just need to be plated it up, so it should not take that long either. If problems in the kitchen, customer should be informed to decide if they want to keep on waiting or notlack of communication is the worse feauture of any customer oriented business. Summing up: Pricy: dinner for two + bottle of wine over 120 euros. Food deserves 4 stars, but service was a complete failure, so only two stars.

It is located very close to one of the main streets in the center (the Esplanad) but still the surroundings are very tranquil and especially in summer it is just lovely to sit outside and sip on a glass (of wine or beer). They offer a great range of micro breweries from around Finland. I do not often find good Finnish beer abroad but here it is clearly shown that it is not because it is jot produced. The staff are very knowledgeable and do take the time to find something that suits your taste. The great thing with Latva is that they do not only have a great selection of beer but also a very good wine selection. The selection by the glass is usually very exciting. The price level is affordable - I'm happy to spend my own money there as well. I think I've been close to 10 times in the restaurant now, and I have never left unhappy. My understanding is that they have a very wide selection of wines, so if you are interested in choosing yourself you can probably find something interesting. So why 4 stars and not 5? As someone else also wrote, although the food is superb it's not really memorable. I can probably only name 3-4 dishes out of all the dishes I have had there. I've also come to notice that some of the dishes are repeated if you go there again within 1-2 months. That's been a bit disappointing. It was good and worth the trip. This time my visit was rather interesting. My friends and I all had a salad from their lunch bar. I opted for a baked potato with shrimp salad, green stuff, pickled onions, and tomato relish. Actually I liked my meal very much. The food presentation was beautiful on all three plates. I was happy because Belge had nice drink options including non-alcoholic wine. I had to order a small bottle of white vine, could not get only one tiny glass non-alcoholic. No problem, it was good wine but it did cost as much as my lunch. About the service. Both waffles were cold so the nice waitress did bring my friends warm waffles at their request. I had an issue with my salad plate from the buffet. The server apologized but did not offer to replace my salad. The next day I contacted the Restaurant Manager, not to complain, but to let her know what had happened. She was very professional and friendly and she understood my point of view. (Day before she had to leave early.) We had a great conversation about how the situation should have been handled. Maybe the waitress was new. Overall, I give the Manager and my meal five stars.
