3/25/24 - Had such a wonderful lunch experience while on a Viking River Cruise this past fall, that when we found ourselves in Reims again, we looked forward to eating there again. We had the same table and the same server which surprised us as it's a fairly good size place. It was a very cool (at least for us Floridians) day, but felt warm and smelled wonderful. We enjoyed our lunch and especially the French Onion soup which was fantastic! I wish I could make it like that. Lots of locals eating there and this has often been the sign of a very good place. Definitely would come again if we got the chance. read more

Not a terrible choice, but definitely on a whim as we were hungry. While wandering back from a few tastings, we found Le Gaulois, which seemed like a great choice since it was quite chilly outside. We were sat promptly and given a menu. Standard Parisian affair with a few meals common in the US. Staff was friendly and prices were appropriate for the area. We ordered a few standard items that were okay, but nothing that we were going to write home about to be honest. The service was meh as it took quite a bit of time to get our food, but not the end of the world since we were indoors and away from the winter weather outside. While again not terrible by any means, I may opt to find something a tad better for a lunch option next time when in Reims. read more

We were so hungry that we decided to stop and eat at this very busy restaurant. It was a huge mistake especially because our male waiter only spoke French and he was manipulative, sneaky, and pushy. For example, we ordered a glass of champagne and he brought a bottle! We sent it back. We ordered water and he brought the biggest bottle. So we drank it. SMH. The food itself was acceptable. I ordered the "chopped steak" (hamburger without the bun, basically) and fries. Waiter: "Medium?" Me: "Yes, please" My wife ordered the chicken. Waiter: "Medium?" The couple sitting at the table right next to us, who ordered immediately after, ordered the steak for him and the chicken for her. She also agreed to medium chicken, and he assented to medium steak. We then became friends over the HOUR we waited for our food. Holy crap. Took for-freakin'-ever. We were on our way to the Women's World Cup, so it was wall-to-wall people, so kind of understandable. We got our food first. Hooray! As he set the plates down, I said "could we have the check please?" Waiter: You haff plentee ohf tyme. Me: We want to be there at 7. It's now 6:30. Check, please. Waiter: Eet dohs not starrrht unteel nihne. Me (clenched teeth): It opens at 7 and we want to be there then. Check, please. Waiter: (I don't speak French but I imagine what he said wasn't terribly polite.) Me: But please, could you get them (I gestured to the folks next to us) their food first? Waiter: (muttered something else in French and stomped off) He then returned with a plate of steak which he presented to the man next to us, then he turned to the woman. "Madame, we haff run out ohf chicken." Um...what? It's been an HOUR and you're NOW telling her? So... turned out she got bread for dinner. They offered no substitute. MUCH friendlier, homier, and more welcoming than the badly-named "Grand" Cafe down the street, Le Gaulois should be an easy choice for dinner, for a dessert, or to watch a soccer match (Les Verts were playing Lyon when we were there). Oh and yes, pretty waitstaff! read more

Le Gaulois stands out as the single worst meal of a lifetime in France, and that includes years of visits and thousands of meals. The country pate was just fine, then came the awful chicken over a tired puff pastry and flabby tasteless sauce. My friend had an equally lousy mussels.
