I'm probably not the first to tell you that the Dordogne is very hot right now. This region in the…read moresouthwest of France is one of the few to have not been destroyed in wars, meaning it's medieval villages are intact. If you are not familiar with the region for this reason, perhaps you have heard about the very famous French dish prepared here: fois gras. In Dordogne you will enjoy the best fois gras of your life with (if I may suggest) a Montbazillac (sweet white) or a Bergerac (red). Connoisseurs know that the way to travel here is by Bed & Breakfast. I found the Bill and Kathy's "Les Volets Rouges" Bed & Breakfast online. I had actually called a bunch and chose them because Bill was so nice to me on the phone. Their home is traditional Dordogne, made with old stones and inside the decoration is cosy and immaculate. Kathy takes great care of the guests. I have never been to a Bed & Breakfast in Dordogne or anywhere else where such care was taken. She changed our towels every day, the swimming pool is heated, you can use their terrace and she even lent us plastic dinner ware for a picnic. There are even bathroom amenities so if you forget something, chances are they will have put it in the bathroom for you! Noise is not an issue at Les Volets Rouges as the only neighbors are sheep, and they go to bed early! Besides the welcoming English couple, their lovely home and the charm you feel in it, the Volets Rouges Bed & Breakfast Dordogne is perfectly situated between Beynac and Sarlat. Both cities are worth a day trip at the very least. When we came here, the weather was actually not warm and we had some rain but I was pleased to notice that the region is just as lovely in the cool weather as it is in the hot sun. The cool weather actually deters tourists and makes March or September ideal times to see the charm of the Dordogne without the throngs of tourists at all corners. I will definitely be back. I just hope there will be room for me! Bill and Kathy have three rooms to rent, all with private bathrooms/showers. Breakfast in their immaculate dining room is a treat. You feel like royalty and family at the same time when you visit Les Volets Rouges Bed & Breakfast Dordogne! Note, prices in 2011 are 65 euros per night.

WE are a family of 5 whi stayed at Echappee Verte in August 2013. We stayed in Les Lilas, a 3 bed…read moreproperty. Every day of our visit we had to use the vacuum cleaner to clear spider webs from the walls. In addition, we had to vacuum insects that were running across the floors and up the walls on many occasions, each day. During the night we could hear scratching noises in the walls of the double bedroom. It sounded like mice were running along the bedroom floor and since the skirting board had such big gaps at the bottom this seemed likely. We could also hear scratching above the ceiling. This noise was repeated throughout the night. Every night. In the bedroom with single beds we could hear scratching in the ceiling too and the same in the room with bunk beds. On the outside of the walls there are many holes between the stones that are allowing mice and insects to enter the house. You said to me that it had been very hot recently and that insects were looking for somewhere cool. This is not a suitable explanation. It is regularly hot in the Dordogne and you should ensure steps have been taken, as with the other properties, to make sure animals and insects cannot enter the house. The cement on the walls of all the other properties means insects and animals cannot get in the house. The fact that there has been some additional cement applied - it is a different colour - suggests this is a known problem. We could not relax inside the house and this was a huge disappointment. Before booking we looked at the customer reviews on your website and this influenced our decision to book. Since returning home I have noticed that these reviews are all several years old and, I believe, relate to previous owners. I cannot speak for other properties, but Les Lilas is not fit for letting as there are all these problems. In addition to the problems with animals and insects two light bulbs in the double bedroom did not work, the main light in the bedroom with bunk beds did not work, two drawer front handles fell off, one drawer front in the kitchen fell off as did one in the double bedroom, the upstairs toilet would not flush, the shower in the shower room did not stay in the holder and kept falling on the floor and the double bed had a large dip in the middle.

The house is very out of the way, quite hard to find among the windy roads and the road leading to…read moreit from the main road is bumpy. but this place is so worth it, set amongst vineyards in the South of France, the house sleeps 12 but is big enough for many more, an outside swimming pool, fully equipped kitchen, 2 bathrooms, conservatory and large Sitting room as well as outdoor bbq area and large barn area. Stayed here for a week in the summer and had a fantastic time, the swimming pool is a good break from the sun and the house serves as a great base for exploring the countryside around it, 1hr from Bordeaux (approx) and about 30 mins from Bergerac there are absolutely loads of places to visit in the area. The kitchen in the house is massive, open plan to the sitting room so you can entertain in style (in winter, in summer you have got to sit outside!) and plenty of room for a few people to help with the cooking. Youll need it as the house sleeps 12, and theres plenty of room for more if you want a couch or floor space. The house is fully equipped, and all they ask is you leave it stocked like you find it, the shelves are full of books which people have left over the years, your encouraged to take one and leave one and the cupboards have all the essentials. The guest book is full of comments going back 20 years, so the past has seen many happy families and groups of friends rent it out I would recommend this for somewhere to stay if you have the money, perfect for a large family, or a group of friends to spread the cost. Southern France at its best!!
