After about 20 minutes and a complaint, we got our menus, accompanied by stylish and humourous apologies. OK, maybe a genuine mistake . . .
We ordered two single dishes, of which one arrived and a three-course set lunch, of which the first dish arrived. Then, everything stopped again.
Following loud remonstrations from the couple at the next table, service recommenced . Starters and salads were normal, mediocre stuff. The sardines were excellent but the cassoulet when it eventually arrived was not. Removing the meat items from the surface (duck and sausage) revealed a solid dry mass of white beans, stuck to the pot and beyond the capability of fork or knife. Oh dear! We decided to leave without chancing dessert.
Le St Jean offers classy surroundings with reasonable prices. Service was charming when available and it's a great place to sit with a drink. But the place suffers from the complacency that comes with the location in a World Heritage Site.
Cassoulet is the local speciality and a simple dish to prepare. They should be able to do it properly. Big fail.
