Do not come here if you prefer a quiet library- try Okemos instead. I left before I finished my work because it was so bothersome.

The ELPL is a separate entity and not part of the Capital Area District Library. While a Lansing…read morelibrary card will work in Okemos and so on, it won't in East Lansing. When I first experienced this, I was definitely ticked but it ensures that all the patrons are East Lansing residents. But you don't have to be a resident to browse (public library, duh) or use the free Internet. The books on sale are dirt cheap and, surprisingly, are a decent selection.

I'm particularly fond of the CADL website, where you can choose a book, put it on hold and then have it sent to the library of your choice and pick it up when it's in. Awesome! My one complaint is that the children's room is not particularly large, and it often gets VERY crowded during story times. A door would be nice, too, as it's not unusual for kids (okay, MY kids) to try to wander out into the main library.

What a beautiful library! This is one of the first places were explored when our family moved to…read morethe area last year, and we were so pleasantly surprised. The children & young adult sections include many of the newer releases that my kids want to read, and still has a nice selection of the more classic types of books. Although the staff seem quite serious, they're extremely helpful and kind. The movie, game & TV series on DVD selection is fun, too. Most are free with the exception of brand new releases and some games. The entire back of the library has giant, vaulted windows that open to a beautiful forrest area. A stone fireplace adds beauty, warmth and charm, too. Chairs, couches & small desks line up all along those windows (and near the fireplace), so there are many comfy places to study, read and relax. I've also been pleasantly surprised by the amount of Christian fiction they offer. Although I don't enjoy ALL the authors in that genre', I have happily found several that I do enjoy. And when I only have a few minutes to select a book, the stickers on the outside of the books make it easy to identify the genre' by simply glancing down a shelf. The basement holds a used book store where we've found some great books & magazines to take on vacation (when we didn't want to risk taking a library book out of town). The prices are very reasonable. Hours are limited. We're so grateful to have such a lovely place to study and find great resources.

The tables are short. Like short short. Or perhaps the chairs are too high. Either way, for a girl 5'3'', with an average-sized torso, I felt like a giant sitting at the table. And it made working on the computer uncomfortable, as I had to hunch over. Otherwise, it's a pretty standard library. Not too many windows, though, and most seating is out in open, which, if you prefer, that's great. I prefer a little more seclusion in my libraries, with views of the outdoors.

This location itself does not have much of anything, but they can get things from other locations of library network. New release movies take a while to get them. Once you reserve it, you don't lose your place in queue. They email pickup notice. Copy is 15 cents per page. Coin operated. Scanner is available. You have to rent one from info desk and hook it up on computers within library. Small scanner, so you have to scan one page each time. Plenty of parking. People working there are very friendly and courteous. They are some dubious grown-ups playing games at computer station all day long. I never had anyone bothering me. So, no problem. There is a uniformed security guard on duty.

It's so refreshing to finally have an institution in our town that supports the real science and…read morehistory impacting our lives today. So much white privilege is displayed by so many people who carelessly disregard the racist history of science and learning. Medical programs from experimentation on slave ships to the Tuskegee Study show us just how racist medicine, including modern medicine, is. That is why I am so proud to have an institution like the DeWitt District Library which embraces policies to reflect this dark past. Whereas everyone else is simply pretending just because they are vaccinated, they safe, and returning to "normal" life, DDL knows there is no more normal, that vaccines are highly suspect, and the only choice to remain safe is 24/7 masking, plastic barricades, etc. What I don't understand though is why they aren't disinfecting the library materials...using the library is one degree away from shaking hands with everyone else who goes there and demonstrates a clear danger that DDL is simply disregarding. If they are serious about equitable safety, they need to address this immediately. That being said, I am also pumped about how prominently DDL has embraced Critical Race Theory, proudly displaying a wide variety of CRT books for DeWitt to embrace. Anyone who has spent any time around this town, especially the schools, knows how deep racism runs. I, for one, agree with DDL and think it's important to teach kids as early as possible. Ensuring DeWitt's children, who - of course - frequently the library, immediately know their own implicit racism is the only way DeWitt is going to be able to heal from the racist past it blindly enjoys.
