You have to rent one from info desk and hook it up on computers within library. Small scanner, so you have to scan one page each time. Plenty of parking. People working there are very friendly and courteous. They are some dubious grown-ups playing games at computer station all day long. I never had anyone bothering me. So, no problem. There is a uniformed security guard on duty.

The tables are short. Like short short. Or perhaps the chairs are too high. Either way, for a girl 5'3'', with an average-sized torso, I felt like a giant sitting at the table. And it made working on the computer uncomfortable, as I had to hunch over. Otherwise, it's a pretty standard library. Not too many windows, though, and most seating is out in open, which, if you prefer, that's great. I prefer a little more seclusion in my libraries, with views of the outdoors.

The MSU main library has everything you need for research and study. It contains the vast majority of the University's library collection. It also has tons of study locations from loud to quiet, comfy or torturous. The Sparty's cafe stays open late, and open 24 hours during finals. The computers here stink. MSU computers take FOREVER to log in. I have no idea why. There always seems to be a large amount that are not functioning properly. Compared to those available for Engineering students in the Engineering Building, they're flat out awful. The place is over 50 years old and it's really starting to show in some areas. Regardless, they keep it in pretty good shape and it serves its purpose well. As with all university libraries, they need to keep transitioning from being a place for research to a place to study. Hardly anyone goes to the library anymore to search for a book they need. The stacks should be condensed to free up more space for study nooks. They also need to put more electrical outlets in to account for the fact that everyone has a computer now. Piece of advice: Bring a power strip and extension cord with you if the Library is busy. This way you can make a table far from an outlet work and make an outlet that someone else was already using help out multiple people.

I can't believe my sister has lived in Okemos for so long and never took me here before. If you want a glimpse as to what 19th century life was like in the Lansing area, then you need to come here and explore. It's open for tours by appointment only on Saturdays, but you can walk the grounds any day of the week. Here is a sampling of what you'll find: A Greek Revival-style farmhouse built between 1862-5. They know this because as historians were removing wallpaper they discovered newspapers that were used as insulation dated from those years. The farmhouse was relocated here from Marsh Road. Randall School, a one-room rural schoolhouse relocated from near Fowlerville. It cost $853.15 to build in 1883 and served 1st-8th graders. The Barnes House (1849), was the first frame house built in Okemos not using logs. The general store, and the log cabin from Haslett are both cool as well. My favorite thing to see though was the Tollgate House and the parts of the original wood planks from the toll road which travelers from Detroit took to get to the State Capitol in Lansing. A penny to cross is pretty damn cheap compared to the toll roads we drive these days! If you are in the area this is a great piece of Michigan history you don't want to pass by.

I'm particularly fond of the CADL website, where you can choose a book, put it on hold and then have it sent to the library of your choice and pick it up when it's in. Awesome! My one complaint is that the children's room is not particularly large, and it often gets VERY crowded during story times. A door would be nice, too, as it's not unusual for kids (okay, MY kids) to try to wander out into the main library.

The building itself is absolutely beautiful, with incredible architecture, historic details, and a stunning dome that really stands out the moment you walk in. You can tell a lot of care has gone into preserving the history of the building. The inside is just as impressive as the outside. The marble floors, decorative ceilings, and historic chambers give you a real sense of Michigan's history and government. Walking through the halls and seeing where important decisions are made was both interesting and inspiring. The atmosphere was welcoming and educational. Staff and guides were friendly and helpful, and the self-guided areas made it easy to explore at your own pace. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, or just looking for something unique to do in Lansing, the Michigan State Capitol is definitely worth the visit.
