The structure is very similar in style to other county courthouses in Michigan built in the same era, such as those in Lenawee County and Barry County. Like many of the older courthouses, the requirement for space necessitated a supplemental building. There is a modern building next door to the old Courthouse, as well as other buildings in town, that house county functions.

I first came across the Midland County Courthouse when I was in Midland, Michigan for a business…read moreconference.  I noticed it when I was driving at night out of town looking for a supermarket.  The building kind of 'jumps out' at you because it is well lit.  That's not the only attraction about the place.  It is uniquely designed.  The shape of the building is attractive, strong and reassuring.  Not like a faceless, bureaucratic building at all. I must say, however, that an addition was put on the building, thankfully in the back, and it is a dull, glass and brick affair.  In the manner of such buildings that side tries to appear antiseptic and professional but comes off as intrusive to the eye. The main building that I am describing is much more a part of the community.  The cornerstone was laid by Professor Dow of Dow Chemical.  Much of the paint materials and other items on the outside of the building are or were derived from various Dow products.  Almost the entire courthouse, except for the addition, was made from local materials.  What an accomplishment! The building is decorated with historic paintings including images of representatives of local Native American tribes and pioneers.  It is a very touching set of scenes.  Along with the building comes a descriptive historical marker (read both sides!) and a wonderful tribute to members of the armed forces of the United States.

I was selected for a case and after the jury selection was complete, we got tags saying we were jurors and went to the deliberating (deliberation?) room. We were told we could go get our cell phones and parking would be paid for because we were selected. I can't really talk about the case, but the building is nice and it's by a bunch of parking garages and restaurants. (The parking at 4th and Washington is $1.20/hr) Just a heads up, you cannot take cell phones or anything that takes photos with you at first (laptops, etc.) we were allowed only because of our Juror badges. There's actually a list of things you can't take in, which I'm glad a read beforehand. I had both knitting needles and crochet hooks in my bag (and a cheese pocket knife, but I knew to take that out first.) I guess I could say it's a great place to go if you ever get jury duty or if you have to go to a courthouse. If you're not wanting to roam the restaurants, there's a little coffee shop diner on the first floor that makes food right where you can see them cooking. I think it's run by an older Asian couple. The gent in there was so sweet! He said he could put the second half of my sandwich in their fridge until the end of the day so it wouldn't go bad. And I kept hearing his wife/the woman in there calling people Mr. "Hi, Mr. Mike! How are you today?" The only downfall is that there's currently construction going on outside and the sidewalk is being worked on. It was rainy and I had to go a little further out into the rain than I wanted to get a drink from my car. That's only temporary though, and had nothing to do with the building itself.

I parked in Royal Oak downtown and my wife and I attempted to use their app to pay for parking…read more This is the only way to pay for parking downtown, can't even use a credit card on the meter which most have nowadays if they don't have a coin slot. When my wife tried to pay, the app told her that parking was "free". So we went along with our lives assuming we were fine. A couple weeks later, I get a letter saying that I owe the city $2.75 for parking. It's not a lot, so I just decided to pay it. That's what I would've paid in the first place. But today, I just got another bill in the mail for a grand total of $17.25?!?! And it ends up being more like $20 with fees and crap. Literally makes me never want to park on the streets of downtown ever again. Should've parked in a parking structure and walked the extra 10 minutes to downtown. Royal Oak needs to fix their shitty ass parking meters. The next time I get a ticket from them, I will be protesting it.
