The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is a government controlled quasi monopoly for liquor…read moresales in the Ontario province of Canada. I say quasi monopoly since beer and wine are sold at "The Beer Store" and a few exceptions to distilleries, breweries and wineries. At the LCBO you can find your typical hard liquors from all over the world and premixed alcoholic beverages that I don't even see at specialty alcohol stores back in the states. I was so intrigued by the wide selection at the LCBO. I was definitely not trying to dehydrate myself on my trip, but I was just curious by the variety of flavors available. I decided to get: - Snapple Spiked Peach Tea Vodka ($2.80 CAD) - Rockstar Watermelon Freeze ($3.40 CAD) - Crazy Uncle Hard Root Beer for Grown Ups ($2.85 CAD) - Crazy Uncle Hard Cream Soda for Grown Ups ($2.85 CAD) - Black Fly Sour Raspberry ($2.85 CAD) These cans have a 10cents recycling fee per can and a 13% already included tax. I like that the tax is already included in the prices so there are no surprises at check out. I can definitely see how a 13% tax affects more pricey liquors. No wonder why I was asked if I brought over any alcohol when I was checking in through customs. Nevertheless I respect it. Canada has REAL healthcare for everyone so at least the tax is going to the right places. I really enjoyed my pre spiked cans of alcohol. I especially liked the Snapple Spiked Tea Vodka and it is definitely something I would drink all of the time if they had it in the states. The sodas were a bit too sweet for me since I do not usually drink soda. I will keep that in mind the next time I find myself at an LCBO. I was especially pleased at check out when the sweet young man behind the counter asked to see my ID. The legal age to drink in Canada is 19!! I feel extra extra flattered that he asked me for my ID and I slightly giggled as I reached for my passport. I was complimented on how young I looked. Canadians are the sweetest!! ~ And I believe this to be universal... If you drink, don't drive - Si vous buvez, ne prenez pas le volant ;)

Went to pay with 40 dollars and decided to give my friend his 10 dollars back after the purchase (I owed him cash because he bought me food). The cashier wanted to decline the whole transaction due to the fact that I handed my friend the 10 dollars in which she assumed I was buying for my friend who actually HATES alcohol. For the cashier, you cannot assume that I'm buying for him. That 10 dollars change could be used for ANYTHING. For you to assume that made me feel very attacked and although there was only 1 witness, I felt very embarrassed being called out for making a legal purchase. However, the employee who showed me the selection of beers was very professional and knowledgeable. The selection itself is massive with much to choose from. I will no longer be purchasing from this LCBO EVER.

The store I visit more often. Because of what it offers: Proximity! ;)…read more The store is okay but much smaller than pretty much every other store I've been to. The vintages section is not bad. They have recently re-arranged the shelves and opened up the back to create a bit more space, and that's a good change. However, I don't think they've added much in terms of selection. If you are into port and / or sherry, don't expect to see here very much to select from. You have your standard harveys and grahams and then it's all Canadian cheap imitations suitable for cooking and cocktails but not drinking as is. The section of Canadian whiskys seems to have expanded, which is welcome change. Scottish single malts are not represented very well though.

From a larger perspective, Beer stores in general have become less useful, unless you're into picking up larger cases of beer (which I'm usually not). For my liking, in that I often buy only a dozen or so at a time, and often like to pick up a bunch of mixed singles, there are better stores than this one. As it pertains to this particular store, I've found that they have less selection than most other stores, and I also tend to find them less organized (not only are their shelves of mixed singles often messy, the store itself has things all over the place). They also seem to be terminally low on stock of some of the singles. Last time I couldn't find any of the buck a beer options. Not sure if they carry them at this store, but hard to tell. The people that work here are nice, and tend to be as efficient as in most other stores. This is the closest beer store to my house, but I'll often go a little out of my way to go to a different store, or go to the LCBO, who have a far better selection of singles beers.
