They have a huge range with all kinds of seasonings and marinades available too. Their service is great. Last time I went in they cut exactly what I wanted and seasoned it for me with my choice of seasoning at no extra cost. Their lamb rosemary and mint seasoning is the best around. They also have a great range of dog bones, chicken necks and off cuts at much cheaper prices than supermarkets. You can get fresh eggs to go with your bacon. They do get really busy on weekends though but always have about 5 or 6 staff there at a time so it's not too bad. And their opening hours are so long you can go there just about any time. Check out their website before you go for their weekly specials or to get some recipe idea's! Oh and at this branch they have a free BBQ with the Butchers on Sunday mornings so if you want to try before you buy, plan a trip then!

I also grabbed a bargain with the twin pack chicken retailed at $8.95, which was perfect for a roast. I love that they stock Beerenberg products here and if you're running out of time and want to avoid another pit stop, pick up some pasta, vegetables and sauces here. For the blokes who love their roasted pig, a spit and mobile coolroom is up for hire. Perfect for those summer barbies. Murray Valley Beef Producers is like a butcher supermarket. It's pretty big! You will find all sorts of meats and seafood here. You will also find a range of processed items, like sausages, schnitzels, spring rolls, and marinated meats. There is quite a selection of different cuts to choose from depending on the animal. What I was impressed with was the quality of the cuts. In particular the ribs. I was looking for beef ribs for a Brazilian style bbq I was planning for the weekend. This butcher stocked yearling ribs with a good amount of meat on them. Some butchers cut off the belly part just over the ribs; which annoys me as the ribs then not have much meat on them. Well, not here! They are very meaty and really good quality. Best part was they were really well priced as well! Only around $15 for 1.3kg. Schwing! I also bought a pack of pepper Texan style snags which were lovely. Very meaty, not too much fat and really juicy! So, I know that Mount Barker is a little out of the way for most. But, if you have freezer space, I would recommend checking it out and stocking up here. Especially if you like quality very cheap!

Their meat is better, the range is bigger, the service is friendlier, and often the prices are cheaper too. We usually buy chicken schnitzels in bulk here, and have had many good steaks. We've tried all their chicken and pork sausages so far with our favourites being the chicken and cheese. They also sell ready to bake/cook chicken rolls which are actually really delicious. They have a huge range of stuffings, fillings and marinades with their chicken rolls which makes for an easy dinner. It's always fresh, we've never had a bad incident. They also sell schnitzel steaks, both chicken thigh and breast and these Kentucky style ones, do try the kentucky style ones if you can, the breaded crumb has some delicious seasoning. They are also around the same size too and this butcher tends to have more flavors and marinades on offer though. Their marinades are nice and their cuts are generally leaner which is definitely good as a lot of supermarket cuts can be filled with fat (especially some of the steak). Staff are friendly and helpful which explains why the store is generally pretty busy when it is open. For BBQ's I recommend some of the satay kebabs as they taste extraordinary. This butcher is also my first stop for chicken fillets (when the supermarkets don't have as lean cuts and aren't on special).

Standom Smallgoods, and in the Case the Standom Butcher at Gepps Cross have been a meat lovers institution for many a year. Walking into the store you see glorious meat products that will give you atrocious heart burn and the most 'colourful' wind you have ever experienced! I have only rated Standom 4 out of a possible 5 stars for the simple reason that there are better options around for similar products, but there are only a few locations where you can find them all in one place! I am a personal fan of their line of Wursts that go amazingly with a good wholegrain mustard (one of the few meats that are not better with Rosella Tomoato Sauce!), but also the line of cured pork and beef is something to marvel! They don't have the really candy like ham that you will find imported from Spain or Italy (Serano or Parma), but there are some great options for platters or sangers! If you are feeling game check out their gourmet presswurst, it's an odd texture, but pretty awesome!

What more can you say? A lot, although you'd be repeating the same general line as above. So here goes. A lot of the wursts, sausages etc are pork based. Standom must use only the tastiest little piggies, because the flavours, whether smoked or spiced up with herbs, are mouthwatering. This shop could convert a vegan, once you got them screaming through the door. As well as the range of exotic smoked sausages, including double smoked ones, there are plenty of other home-made lines as well as European pre-packed stuff. A few of these lovely meaty products stand out for flavour and value, in my opinion. The Bockwurst sausages are fat little babies with a delicious smoky flavour. They're great cut in half and grilled, or boiled and put in a hotdog, if you can get your mouth around one. The smoked Viennas come in peasant and deluxe (ie pure pork) form. Both are excellent, but you save a few cents per kg with the cheaper ones. The Weisswurst (white sausage) has bits of greenish spice in it. Very tasty. If you are there before they're all gone, the 'king size' sausage will make you the hit of any barbecue. They are huge and juicy when cooked, and delicious. The fritz is as good as you can buy anywhere. It's a bit smoky and has that slight rubbery spring which any fritz connoisseur will tell you is the sign of a quality fritz. Finally, bits of most of the meats on sale turn up as offcuts in cheaply-priced bags in the open fridge. These offcuts often include whole sausages etc and are not to be sneezed at, whether for pizza toppings, kids' lunches or nibbling at straight from the bag on the way home from Standom's House of Smoky Temptations. I've left a lot of good things out. My advice into head out to Gepps Cross and call in. Look for a big wooden (two dimensional) bull on the side of the road. You'll be so glad you did. Even if you're a vego, the experience will be character-forming for you.

When you first walk in the smell of smoked meat wafts in the air and stays there as it's ever present. It's also a vegetarians nightmare to see all the meat. The fresh meat is trimmed, dressed and beautifully presented, the continental smallgoods are made to perfection and are hanging and sitting around everywhere saying eat me. Viennas, Kranski, Pepperoni, Kasler, Lackschniken, Liverwurst, Bratwurst and the list goes on. It's one of those places you become passionate about food and want a piece of everything. Bratwurst is an excellent substitute to the BBQed sausage in bread and once you've tried it, you'll never bother going back. Rarely do I get indigestion with any of their smallgoods, but a normal sausage from the supermarket or other butcher I have to whip out the Quickeaze. The shop also has various pickled items, bread, eggs, cheese, noodles, biscuits, cakes and so much more. If this was the only food people ever knew existed, they would be happy and satisfied with what they had. Annually Standom has been winning awards in all categories and it certainly is worthy of them all.
