The German Pantry in Hahndorf is your one stop shop for everything edible, and some not so edible, German style! Not the biggest store on the planet, but it doesn't have to be. The smell of cured meats and metwursts fill your nostrils as you enter the shop and low, when you turn to your left you are greeted by THE WALL OF BEER GLASSES! Rumoured to be the 14th or 15th wonder of the world, there are plenty to choose from, including the trademark 'Boot' and other beer branded glasses in their traditional shapes (like the cool Kwak mini yard glass, even though it is from Belgium). You can also find a large selection of sweets and other random german fare, but lets face it, Beer and Meat is where it begins and ends!

We often buy their sausages which are gluten free. When we cook them there's hardly much grease that comes out and it doesn't taste too fatty or oily. A super plus point for me. We've tried all their chicken and pork sausages so far with our favourites being the chicken and cheese. They also sell ready to bake/cook chicken rolls which are actually really delicious. They have a huge range of stuffings, fillings and marinades with their chicken rolls which makes for an easy dinner. It's always fresh, we've never had a bad incident. They also sell schnitzel steaks, both chicken thigh and breast and these Kentucky style ones, do try the kentucky style ones if you can, the breaded crumb has some delicious seasoning. I think to me, they are a great example of a local business and it looks like they're getting fantastic support just by providing good service and great produce.

Murray Valley Beef Producers is like a butcher supermarket. It's pretty big! You will find all sorts of meats and seafood here. You will also find a range of processed items, like sausages, schnitzels, spring rolls, and marinated meats. There is quite a selection of different cuts to choose from depending on the animal. What I was impressed with was the quality of the cuts. In particular the ribs. I was looking for beef ribs for a Brazilian style bbq I was planning for the weekend. This butcher stocked yearling ribs with a good amount of meat on them. Some butchers cut off the belly part just over the ribs; which annoys me as the ribs then not have much meat on them. Well, not here! They are very meaty and really good quality. Best part was they were really well priced as well! Only around $15 for 1.3kg. Schwing! I also bought a pack of pepper Texan style snags which were lovely. Very meaty, not too much fat and really juicy! So, I know that Mount Barker is a little out of the way for most. But, if you have freezer space, I would recommend checking it out and stocking up here. Especially if you like quality very cheap!

We bought T-bone's, roasts, mince as well as some other cuts, tried some of his sausages that were wonderful, now I have run out of superlatives - certainly we will be placing another order this year - and we will be buying our meat from him exclusively in future.

A few years ago I seized purchasing my meat and veg from the big shopping outlets, you know who they are. This has been a choice that has served me well. Much like what you used to get in the old days, this meaning service, the local butcher offers this. They will talk to you about every cut and take you on a food journey almost. The big shopping chains don't even have that little window where you could see the meat going-ons. The butcher man always has plenty of marinated offerings that are normally the cheapest buys. It is a bit of a speciality of theirs and it won't disappoint for your BBQ, oven or stovetop.
