I started with absolutely no clue about Japanese culture or Okinawan karate, but felt comfortable following along in his classes. He is very receptive to any questions you may have since he naturally wants to share his love of karate with those around him. I can sum this business up in one word: McDojo. I'm honestly sad because I wanted to like this…read moreplace, not for myself but for my kids. Unfortunately instead of being a place of learning, like my husband experienced taking karate as a child here in Durant, it's nothing more than an expensive belt factory. I expected a monthly fee, not a problem. What is a problem is having children test for their next belt within two weeks ($60 per test) of even starting. They haven't even learned anything worth testing for in literally 3 hours of overall practice time. And then to be told to expect them to test every two months if not more..that's not how this works. There is no set time that they should be ready to test. If you go to a class and look around you will see tons of children running around with different colored belts. Very young children. And there are quite a few with black belts. If that isn't the biggest indication that this is a McDojo, I don't know what is. So basically unless you have money to blow so that your kids can run around and have fun, and a lot of closet space for their spiffy colorful belts, I'd skip this place.

He has learned the importance of respect and honor. Not only has my son learned, but I have as well. I don't feel like I am someone paying to have my child take a class, I feel as though I am part of a family with Mr and Mrs. Perez and even some of the other parents. Being a single mom of an extremely high maintenance child, I can only express that Karate has given him a different kind of confidence and a strong attitude all because of what goes on in a 45 min class that remains consistent. I live in Rockwall, so it's a little of a drive, but well worth it considering the instructor. A little research online will reveal Keith Gorham knows his stuff and is well known in the Kenpo community. From personal experience, I find classes with Keith to be very rewarding. He is very patient and willing to teach anyone regardless of age or ability. He has been teaching Kenpo for many years and it shows. I feel very fortunate to be within driving distance of his dojo as it is very exciting to be learning Kenpo, especially from someone such as Keith. If you are considering taking martial arts, you can't go wrong with Texas Kenpo Karate.
