The pizzas are tasty. A bit pricey for a small portion but it is definitely meant for one person to consume. Service is great! Love how they know their drink menus and help me and my friends pick what drink fits our taste. Once you walk inside, it is super dark but your eyes will adapt. If it wasn't for one of the bartenders at Hopping Gnome, one of their next door neighbors our group wouldn't have known that Lava & Tonic existed so, that's a bonus for them. I like Tiki bar atmosphere and L&T had it done right, dark and stormy without being super...moist is the best word for it. Lava & Tonic had that right combination of dive-y and fun. We sat down in the front and after looking at the menu and I saw their original drink the Teak-9. I usually am not a rum drinker but the cocktail looked interesting and with 3 out of 4 shrunken heads (their internal rating for how strong their drinks out) and you know, I don't want to spoil their mood by ordering an Old Fashioned. So, I will caveat this by saying that I had been drinking beers prior to this but the Teak 9 was not only delicious but it's 3 shrunken heads rating was well deserved, but it drank well so it went down quickly...maybe little too quickly. I actually got another one because: 1) it was that good, pretty well balanced which for tiki drinks is hard to do, 2) they were 9 dollars. Thankfully I wasn't driving. read more

Lava & Tonic is amazing! Any time I'm in Wichita I have to go and visit. The ambiance is classic tiki bar with a very dark room with fun Hawaiian decor. The music set the vibe for a fun night of drinks! The tiki drinks I've tried have all been delicious. This time around we got the Shark Bite and the Jalisco Headhunter. The headhunter was the drink of the night for sure. The presentation was literally fire! And the drink itself was incredibly delicious with just a hint of spicy with the jalapeño. We were in Kansas to see some family and found this little gem. We have been to several tiki bars and my expectations were low. I wasn't sure what to expect. This place was great! The ambiance was classic tiki bar; dimly lit with an appropriate amount of tiki decor which was not kitschy. Please note, you need to be 21 or over to be seated, and you will be asked to show your ID. Our party of four ordered different drinks. The Teak 9, Mai tai, Jalisco Headhunter, Shark Bite, and a virgin Piña Colada. They were all really good. I thought the shark bite was maybe a little sweet for my taste buds though. They have Tiki Discs, which are small pizzas but they are also great for sharing. They were good and had several different offerings. It took a little while to get the pizzas, so be patient. And speaking of patient, as with most tiki bars, the drinks take some time to prepare. This is not a place where you go when you are in a hurry. The whole point of tiki is to sit back, relax, and enjoy the vibe. Escapism at its best. I was also impressed with the music. They definitely kept it in the tiki style. This is a pet peeve of mine with other tiki bars, but not at Lava and Tonic, they nailed it. Parking was easy. Our service was outstanding. The waitress was waiting till I got back to the table to take our order. She paid attention to the fact that I said we were on our way to a concert and asked if we wanted our check now or later. The drinks were very good. This tiki bar is great. However, all tiki bars I've ever been to is more ratchet than anything else haha. This place is very relaxed if you want to have intimate drinks (ie a date) or if you have a couple friends to just "chill". The booths are intimate, but they can seat a lot of people. I am a social drinker so I like to interact/move around (so the booths are not for me) Even though they are directly across the from the bar, it's kind of secluded even if you are with people because it's large and dark. The drinks are really cool: from the flavors to the cups they come in. Be careful of the zombie because it is strrrooooooonnnnggggg. Legit it says no more than 2, so don't drink more than 2. I am a heavy drinker and I was feeling pretty good after those. It is dark in there, so bring your reading glasses if you can't read under low light haha. Lastly, I always find it weird they have a host at the front who always asks if you have reservations. Yet every time I've been there, the place is empty enough to always find seats. This place is awesome. We came here on a recommendation from the staff at Piatto (which was another great spot) and so glad we did. The door is non discript as the windows are all blacked out. Look for the two flickering lights outside. We were asked if we had a reservation and we didn't but thankfully snagged two spots at the bar. The vibe in here is spot on. Friendly staff and great drinks. You can tell they thoughtfully put together the drink menu, glass selections and garnishments. I wish we had a place like this in our hometown. I was excited to come here because of the reviews and what I had heard from friends. Went on a Wednesday evening happy hour. It is very dark when you first walk in and it took a while for my eyes to adjust. The place was dead even though I had toale a reservation. The bartender told us where to sit, but I asked for a booth since no one was there. We were told that was fine, but if it got busy we would have to go back to our original seats. It never got busy and our original seats were given to others. It took about 10 minutes to even get waited on even though there was only one other couple there, so I was already a bit irritated. Ordered a zombie and a shark bite to drink and a couple of little pizzas. Everything was overpriced for the quality. Drinks were super strong and ended giving us both a headache even though we both only had one. Pizzas were nothing special and way overpriced. Bartender was slow and not very friendly. Place looked cool inside, but probably won't be back. So disappointing. read more

The best secret hideaway in Wichita. We come here any time we're in town and are never disappointed. Their menu covers the tiki classics, and their bartenders are well-rounded enough to make anything that may not be printed. Excellent rum selection. I came in for with a friend at 6:55 p.m at the latest excited to try what seemed like very cool drinks. Sat at the bar for 15 FULL minutes with not even a here's a menu I'll be with you soon or anything. There was maybe open seat at the bar. Even after making eye contact, we still weren't greeted, given a menu or even acknowledged with a "hey I'm pretty backed up, lll be with you soon". NOTHING. Horrible service. Very legit (and fun) Tiki Bar! My wife and I stopped by while visiting family and were pleasantly surprised to find a no-joke Tiki Bar in Wichita. Overall vibe is more "surf guitar" than "South China Seas / Polynesian," but they make it work. Dick Dale, The Ventures, the Bel-Airs, the Chantays are all piped in, but never too loud that you can't carry a conversation. Perhaps one too many Kona Brew surfboards or mirrors on the walls, but the thatched hut bar and mock lava pool in the back balance it out. The "jellyfish lantern" effect is great. It ain't the Tonga Room or Smuggler's Cove by any stretch, but it is undeniably Tiki. The drinks were good -- very solid hand crafted cocktails. We tried the Mai Tai, the Pina Colada (in a frozen pineapple!) and the Painkiller. All very tasty though could be a little stronger (and I say that with the full understanding that a Painkiller is on the opposite side of the mixology spectrum as a Zombie). Minor critique aside, the presentation of the drinks was top notch, and I bought a Mai-Tai glass before I left (cool design). The staff was very friendly. First drink took a few minutes longer than I would have liked (especially on a Thursday), but it's clear that was because each drink is a labor of love. "Lava and Tonic" is a passion project (I mean that as a positive) and it shows. We will absolutely go back each and every time we return to Wichita. A great date night! read more

THIS IS COCKTAIL CRAFT ...not just another watering hole serving draught beer. This place deserves a visit simply for the decor alone it is dark and gorgeous and encourages you to climb into one of their SEVERLY alcoholic offerings. This is NOT a place to go drink on a budget as some of the things are a little pricey HOWEVER they are made with premium ingredients and lots of love and labor shines through. I had a Zombie ( 14.00 ) and although not the greatest drink decision I ever made the actual process was fascinating and the result was very gratifying, this place is NOT a joint that is sugary syrup smoke and mirrors bar that thinks everything needs pineapple juice and more sugar.
