We were really fortunate to find our birth doula (who we love!), but the other 2 candidates were not very impressive. The first doula missed our appointment with no follow-up communication. We were initially confused and thought she was the coordinator for BB, because she only communicated by text. The actual meeting was just by telephone so there was no face-to-face interaction, which felt strange. We could've easily FaceTimed or Zoomed. So communication and reliability were not great. The second doula abruptly canceled our half-hour appointment when we were 10 minutes late for a 30-minute appointment due to my husband wrapping up a Zoom meeting. During our appointment time, she was responding to my emails (in which I apologized for being late), but insisted she could no longer meet with us. I thought this was a really bad sign about what she would be like to work with - labor and delivery is rarely precisely timed and some flexibility is needed. In addition, her email said that she lives in Portola Valley, but we live Berkeley (also where Brilliant Births is located). This also struck me as strange, because it would take 1.5 hours for her to arrive to meet us at the hospital, which is not ideal.

And she has a special knack for just finding ways to be helpful even if we're frazzled and don't know what to ask. She's also very thoughtful about providing advice--in addition to answering whatever random questions we have, she gently offers advice without it ever feeling like she's forcing it on us or it feeling overly didactic. We could go on about how great she is, but the long and short of it is that she's amazing at what she does.

My biggest fears were my low pain tolerance and lack of control over knowing exactly how it would go. Shortly before our due date, Keelia came over to review our birth plan and a timeline of what to expect for pre-labor, active labor, travel to the birth center, transition, and delivery. She made sure we practiced comfort measures, breathing and how I wanted to be supported verbally. It wasn't until the last moments with Keelia where she looked me in the eye and said I was ready, that I actually felt prepared to go into labor and meet my daughter. 2 days later, my water broke in the middle of the night. For the next 44 hours of contractions, naps, two car rides up to the birth center, a traumatic cervical check on day one to then be sent back home, many walks around the neighborhood, yoga ball bouncing, 1 game of Monopoly, snacks, massages, and support - Keelia was at our beck and call. By the time we got to the birth center (again) on day 2 after 36 hours, I was only at 1cm and 50% effaced. Keelia helped me calm down from exhausition and frustration at this news, and we made a plan to get misoprostol to thin my cervix but hopefully proceed with no other interventions. Miraculously, Ava was born 7 hours later. Keelia coached me through contractions which came back to back for hours, waved lavendar oil in front of my face for nausea, massaged my back, covered the clock when she noticed it stressing me out, got me into the shower with Joe when I hit the wall of transition, and helped me breathe through pushing - 3 contractions! She reassured me every step of the way - calmly & knowing I could do it at all moments. In this amazing doula's hands, I felt loved, safe, and supported. Thank you, Keelia.

Jordan is young, eager, and incredibly attentive. Throughout every overnight shift, she remained awake and alert, always ready when our daughter needed her. Most importantly, she cared for our baby with the same patience and gentleness we would ourselves, which gave us tremendous peace of mind as new parents. Her reliability was equally impressive. She was consistently punctual, arriving between 10:58 and 11:00 p.m., and was always respectful and ready to help. Trusting someone with your newborn is no small thing. Jordan made that trust easy. I would confidently recommend both Jordan and Doulas by the Bay to my closest friends and family, and we'd happily welcome her back into our home. From the moment I met Lenore, her energy was so calming I knew we had to have her be a part of our birth. Over the course of the next couple of months, we met with her to talk through all aspects of the birth through to breastfeeding in a mix of virtual and in person visits. We felt as prepared as we could be for the birth, but of course you never know what can happen and we were so grateful to have her there with us during a long labor and delivery with some complications. Lenore happened to be at the hospital for other clients, and was able to visit us during an outpatient induction and for the actual labor and answered our questions throughout. On the birth date, it was late and she popped in after delivering with another client to check my progress, which began to escalate. My partner was looking for help with comfort measures and its like she was there at the perfect time. She continued to work with us through the night till baby was born and I was all good. There was a moment when dad went with the baby while I was getting worked on post birth, and Lenore held my hand through all of the procedures so I wouldn't be alone. Many of the nurses and midwives commented on how special of a doula we had and we couldn't agree more. Having Lenore be a part of our birth experience and our lives is priceless. It was also reassuring that she was a known and respected presence at the hospital. She was amazing so much that I got pregnant a second time just so she can be my doula again. Just kidding when we found out we were pregnant with our 2nd baby we just knew we needed her. Postpartum care with my firstborn after my c-section made all the difference. She has such a calm to her when she came over to talk and help us through the 4th trimester. I loved doing bodywork with her during our home visits. Fast forward to my second birth she was instrumental to helping us through the delivery and getting us to the hospital. I can't say enough good things about her. Love her prenatal and postnatal yoga classes. Love her as my doula.

I first started attending prenatal yoga classes with Leonora about a year ago, when I was 16 weeks pregnant. I went almost every week twice a week until the day I gave birth. (I was in early labor during her morning class!) I then started going to her postnatal yoga classes 6 weeks postpartum and went twice a week for 4 months. Leonora has an incredibly warm and thoughtful energy. She begins every class by checking in with each mom and asks about how you're feeling in your body- any specific concerns? Muscle aches or stiffness? She thoughtfully incorporates your needs into her practice. The overall vibes of each class are immaculate- non-competitive, non-judgemental, with enough space to be either as challenging or relaxing as you need. Every yoga class I went to felt amazing for my body because of the thoughtful options she provides. The postpartum classes are wonderful because people bring their babies and there's such an understanding of needing to stop what you're doing and offer a bottle/nurse/change a diaper etc. It's wonderful to be in a room full of other moms and babies-- it was a great, stress-less way to get out of the house when I was freshly postpartum. There's such a positivity and understanding aura to her classes, which breeds a wonderful community space for prenatal and postpartum moms. Leonora pays such close attention to the needs of her clients and was so good about checking in and providing thoughtful advice. I didn't hire a doula because it was my second baby and I didn't think I needed one... now I really wish I had hired Leonora to be present at my birth because things would've gone so differently if I had had her support. (DEFINITELY will hire her if we decide to do baby #3 in a few years!) Even as "just" a yoga instructor, her guidance has been such a huge part of my birth journey that I am forever grateful for. I tell EVERY pregnant mother I meet in the area to go try her classes, which are so reasonably priced it feels like a steal for the warmth and joyful nurturing she exudes.

It's 8pm on a Saturday night and I am relaxing on my couch having a glass of wine. My little man…read morehas been sleeping in his crib since he fell asleep there, ON HIS OWN, SEVEN minutes after we put him down - without a peep. You read that right. Since I have such ample time, this review will be a long one. I gave you fair warning. I'm not so rigid to think or expect that every night will unfold like tonight. There will be teeth! walking! talking! more regressions to come. However, a month after starting this process, it has become a reasonable reality for me to expect that on more days/nights rather than not (meaning NAPS and bedtime), he will go to sleep. It is a work in progress, but Dahlia guided us through it with the confidence and clarify we ourselves needed to provide to our son for the process to work. The backstory: At 11 weeks old, my son morphed from our lovely sleeping newborn waking twice a night to waking EVERY HOUR, needing to be soothed back to sleep...while sleeping in our bed. As the weeks dragged on, it became clear he was not going to outgrow this hiccup in an amount of time that would preserve my sanity (or marriage lol), and things were snowballing from bad to dreadful (more on that below). He eventually settled on a pattern of waking 4-7 times per night; however, he started having negative sleep associations to most every soothing trick in the book. I won't waste time listing such strategies or the gimmicks I bought on Amazon. Well-meaning folks always shared their soothing strategies. Well, if you can envision it, we tried it. Don't start to tell me about white noise and black out shades. Eventually, NOTHING WORKED except the boob. So sleep - meaning all naps and bedtime plus the night wake ups - became an hour long battle with raging, screaming, kicking, tears. All of which did not guarantee an outcome of sleep in the end! This was a vicious cycle on repeat at least 4 times daily which went on for almost two months (give or take some days where baby was so exhausted he slept well for a night or two). On top of this, I had impending abdominal and oral surgeries. Just icing on the cake. We knew we had to sleep train. After pouring through blogs and books about the various sleep training techniques and studies, I still had reservations (and extreme anxiety subjecting my baby to this), and needed someone to lead me through its ups and downs. Alright I'll be honest - sleep training is mostly down. It is painful. Gutwrenchingly PTSD painful if your baby is anything like mine. Enter Dahlia. She is honest, positive, supportive, respectful, and above all, will use her knowledge to SEE YOU THROUGH IT. She makes herself available and genuinely wants to help you. I cannot thank her enough and I definitely promise you will not get that from a blog. So dread. I used to DREAD naps and bedtime. The clock would hit 5:30pm and my heart would sink a little. My soul would wail a sad song. Now, I think about the time I can spend writing long reviews and blogging while he's sleeping. And the biggest plus? The little man wakes up RELAXED and RESTED and happy to see me. THANK YOU DAHLIA!

Before labor, Allison made sure we felt prepared and confident. I really appreciated how collaborative she was throughout the whole process. She never made us feel like there was one "right" way to do things. She listened to what I needed, made herself available, and offered additional resources based on what would actually be helpful for me. During labor, her support was invaluable. She was reminding me to breathe, eat, change positions, and helping my husband know exactly what he could do to support me. She was super hands on! She worked so naturally alongside the hospital staff. I was so glad she was there especially in a moment where the hospital wanted to move down one path and we were unsure and needed firm. She was caring, kind, calm, and also has a great sense of humor. My husband has said multiple times how invaluable Allison's help and presence were during the birth, and I completely agree. She was so committed to making sure we were prepared and helping us have the most positive birth experience possible. We genuinely don't know how we would have done it without her. And as an added bonus, once our baby arrived, Allison managed to capture the most perfect photos and videos after baby was born. She helped talk us through during the at-home contractions part of labor until we decided it was time to go to the hospital. At the hospital,I was so appreciative of her experience and the relationship she already had with the labor staff. Because she had the context and experience, I didn't have to stress as much about anything I didn't know to ask or do and could focus on my wife and encouraging her through the process. Renata is an absolute angel, though you might not be able to see her wings. We would have had a…read moretraumatic birth had we not partnered with her. The story of our birth is multi-day and long so I won't write about it here, but I'll give you a few bullet points below on how Renata helped and how rare and special it was to have that support: 1. We managed to avoid a C-section just before they were going to wheel me to OR, after I had been prepared for it physically. Upon hearing this was happening she rushed to the hospital and before hand coached us on the phone on the right questions to ask. Thanks to her presence there, and also for the coaching, we managed to avoid the C-section. 2. Wow, Renata is so skilled at counter pressure during contractions! She knows the exact pressure points to press and voila, my contraction discomfort disappeared. I had initially refused an epidural so this was important for me to have. Later when I took the epidural, it only worked on half of me so one side of my body needed this counter pressure still, all the way through to the point of pushing. 3. Renata provided so many resources and education before the birth through her classes and individual coaching. I felt well equipped with knowledge going into it. Also with a plethora of information on the internet, it was great to have filtered info via a professional who has seen hundreds of births (I believe she has seen 700+). 4. Partner and family coaching and post birth support: I couldn't be more grateful to Renata for this! My family had zero ideas or knowledge about the critical postpartum period. They at least got an introduction to the concept from Renata. Anyway, there is so much more to say about Renata's skills and areas of support! I'll just say this instead: you're lucky if you have come across Renata! She is an amazing birth partner and I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to work with her. I'll mention one last thing: if you want to do things holistically, Renata is very well educated in this area! If you want to do things entirely the modern medical way, Renata is very knowledgeable there also! So it's a win win with her. Wishing you all the best in your birthing journey!

VBAC/HBAC success story!…read more As a second-time mom, I knew I wanted my birth experience to be drastically different than my first. I lived in New Jersey when we found out we were pregnant, so I started looking for midwives and OBs out there. I could not find someone who felt right for me. Some wouldn't listen/validate my concerns, others were asking over $10K out-of-pocket up front. As a result, I didn't feel comfortable having any prenatal care at all for the first 30 weeks. Fast forward, my husband got a job in the Bay Area. We were eager to find prenatal care that I felt right about upon moving here. I researched midwives and found Gingi's website. I reached out. We chatted on the phone so she could get an idea of my previous birth and I could ask her some initial questions, and we agreed to meet. I kept researching other midwives, but as soon as I met Gingi, I knew she was the one. The search was over and I had finally found a care provider that I felt confident with. This is so key for an expecting mother. Confidence and trust in your care provider is crucial to obtaining the birth you desire. I could not have had the natural home birth I desired if Gingi Allen wasn't my midwife. God led me to her. She was attentive, caring, and so wise. When my labs showed low iron, she recommended natural ways of increasing my levels. It worked. When we found out my son was breech at 36 weeks, she recommended ways we could flip him. He flipped naturally. My husband was working nights 80 hours a week, I was chasing my 18-month old toddler around, working from home full-time, and unpacking from the move. She reminded me to slow down, reflect, meditate, pause. She really looked at my health from a holistic perspective. Because of her recommendations, I have a fantastic acupuncturist, osteopath and massage therapist. The team she assembled for me was amazing. She was approaching maternity leave herself, and made sure that Grace Bender, her fellow CNM, was there to attend to me postpartum. She was amazing and also at my birth. Kai, her apprentice, was fantastic, and conducted my bone closing ceremony postpartum. During my birth, Gingi really encouraged me to listen to my body. I asked her questions, like "should I push now?" LOL and she would say, "What is your body telling you to do?" She was so patient with me. Listen, my birth, from prodromal labor in the beginning to pushing at the end, was literally a total of 48 hours. She never wavered. She never said, "Well, if x, y or z doesn't happen in this timeframe, then we'll have to.....blah blah blah" That's usually what a woman hears before their care provider deviates from the birth plan. That never happened with Gingi. I loved that she didn't tell me how dilated I was. That was something triggering for me, since I stalled at 9 cm with my first son before I had the C-section. That's not even something I asked Gingi to refrain from doing. She just KNEW that dilating to 10cm was something I was concerned wouldn't happen, so she didn't allow me to worry about it during birth. I'm telling you, this woman's instincts are SUPERB. Trust me when I say, Gingi is the midwife YOU WANT AND NEED. I could not have birthed my beautiful 9lb, 11 oz son at home , after a previous C-section, if I didn't have Gingi. A comment my last midwife made (with my first son), was that my son was "big" which is why I stalled. He was 8 lbs, 12 oz. So literally my second son was almost a FULL POUND LARGER, and I had him at home, COMPLETELY NATURAL. I COULD NOT HAVE DONE THAT WITHOUT GINGI! She is amazing. Just hire her already. You'll be thrilled you did. I was only under her care from weeks 30-40 and still had the most amazing prenatal care experience. My postpartum care, first with her and then, Grace, was crucial to my recovery. I had PPD the first time, but not this time! Gingi Allen will do everything she can to ensure all women in her care have an amazing prenatal care and birth experience. As you can tell, I highly recommend.
