From my first conversation with Jenn to scheduling my appointment, she was incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and professional. She truly cares about her clients -- even though she wasn't accepting new ones, she took the time to recommend stylists at her studio who would be a great fit for my needs. I ended up booking with Cindy, and she did not disappoint! She was so sweet and did an amazing job with both my cut and color. I asked for layers and a color that would blend my grays, and she nailed it! I highly recommend Jenn Shin Studio -- and especially Cindy!

I wanted to go darker, shorter and mature. Jessica has always been my girl and she did an amazing job getting me to where I wanted. I would definitely say we cut at least 6 inches off. It did take a while (8 hours to be exact), but if that's what it takes to get my hair looking amazing then so be it. They have plenty of snacks and drinks available or you can always order food for delivery. Went yesterday and it was super quiet. So I highly recommend going on a week day if you can so it's not as packed. The salon is very clean and inviting. Everyone who works here is very sweet. I haven't tried their scalp/head massage station since they've added it but heard good things.

The pros: Very nice, pleasant staff, especially Jane (also…read morenamed Juan?). I did a digital perm and my hair is VERY stubborn. I had warned them about this beforehand, but no one ever seems to really take me seriously LOL. In order to not damage my hair Jane took an entire 5 hrs! working on it, and was very patient the entire time. This was both a pro and a con - pro in that my hair did not come out fried, as it often can, but con in that 5 hrs is a really long time to be spending sitting in a hair salon! They made sure I had water and a bathroom break, which was very considerate. Jane seemed very knowledgeable and specifically did different treatments for the parts of my hair that hadn't been permed before vs those that had. The top layer took very well. The cons: Again, 5 hrs... I very much appreciate them not wanting to fry my hair, but maybe a little speeding up could have been done? Also, while the top layer permed well, the bottom didn't really take - see photos. Also, just FYI, but there is no validated parking. It wasn't terrible to pay the garage, but just something to be aware of. Overall I really appreciated all the time and patience they took, to specially alter treatments for different parts of my hair, and try to not damage it. If there is some kind of middle ground to be able to do the perm and have it take completely in all the hair, and with less time, that would be ideal.

As a lifelong brunette who has been coloring her hair for decades, I recently made the…read moreuncomfortable decision to go gray. With John K. at New Wave Salon in my corner, I felt confident that this was going to work. During our consultation in April he described the whole process and instructed me to let about 2" of the natural color grow in so he could match the tone. In August he spent a full day to implement the transition. Not only did he explain the process step-by-step, but he also made sure I understood the range of results I might see. I couldn't be happier. John was patient, thoughtful about what would work best, and made sure he did nothing to damage my hair. The results speak for themselves. Without reservation, I am recommending John for complex coloring work. I'd also like to share that I was mortified with the prospect of letting the gray show while I was growing it out. At first I tried to cover it up with coloring sprays and hats, but eventually nothing concealed the amount of gray that came in. I was pleasantly surprised by the encouragement I received from family, friends, acquaintances and strangers who freely and continually told me how much they liked my 2-tone look. This made each day leading up to my transformation with John so much easier. My advice for others who are contemplating going natural is, trust the process, and trust John. An encouraged reader asked me to provide info about the cost. I've never had my hair professionally colored so I don't know what the standard cost for coloring is, but this was likely well beyond that. One factor is that it took a full day of John's time with only short rest periods between applications, washing, and blow drying (which occurs between each step so the chemicals are absorbed by dry hair). Another factor is that it depends on variables including how your hair reacts to the chemicals, what chemicals can safely be used without damaging your hair, and how many processes are needed not only to strip the old color but potentially add low lights if quasi-darker tones remain. All this before the silver tint, potentially a glaze top coat, and a final blow out. It's likely that your colorist will provide a complimentary consultation before you start letting the gray grow out. You can ask questions about timing and expected cost range at that time.

I recently moved to the DMV from NY for school and decided to go with her salon because I wanted to support a small business and the other reviews were great! Booking the appointment was seamless. Annum was able to accommodate an earlier appointment time for me since I had a scheduled meeting later that afternoon. I visited her almost a month ago on April 6th, 2021 so here is my comprehensive review. My balayage took a little under 1.5 hours to complete. She was very efficient while also ensuring that my hair retained its natural moisture and health. She made sure that she respected my time due to my meeting later that evening. When I returned home, I did notice that the toner didn't take on a small but noticeable section of my hair that was noticeably blonde. I immediately texted Annum to let her know and she squeezed me in the same day to reapply the toner for the area, which was a very quick fix. Not every hair stylist would show this level of dedication to ensure that I had the best experience. After a month, the color has held up beautifully and I've received endless compliments on her work. In terms of parking, there are public parking garages on the same street that are affordable and accessible (~$1.25/hr). Highly recommend booking her, she's very professional, honest, and genuinely takes care of her clients! Support your small businesses and book her!!

Long story short, I came to Annum after nearly 2 years of not letting anyone touch my hair because of a disaster that left me in tears with shoulder length hair when I was supposed to only get an inch off my super long hair (obvs, this wasn't her who did it). Now I literally only trust Annum to do my hair and recommend her to all my coworkers, friends, and family. Not only is she precise with all her cuts and color, she can also recommend what she thinks will be flattering for you which is especially nice for people who may not come in with inspo pictures. After she brought life back to my sad hair, I trusted her to finally go ahead and give me some color with a balayage. I haven't looked back since then and have only been going lighter with each visit! The best part is that even several months later, my balayage looks fresh and perfect despite my hair growing out. I personally give her creative freedom and trust her with whatever color she thinks is gonna look great on me but you can always bring/show her what you want and she'll recreate it to the best of her abilities! Remember folks, every artist is different and uses different techniques so an exact recreation isn't really possible. She's great at listening to what you want while also protecting your hair from any unnecessary damage and if you aren't happy with it (which I'm sure is rare) she'll fix it! Annum herself is a delight to come in and see. She's always so sweet and sociable - it's always fun to talk to her while she's working her magic on my locks! I appreciate that she has her own private suite in a salon with other artists which does make her hijabi friendly BUT bear in mind that there are men who will walk around as they probably work there too. I have hijabi friends who don't see this as a problem but to each their own. In terms of pricing, I think her rates are very fair especially considering what some other salons (super side-eye to yall) charge for balayages and color services that aren't even close to beauty that she creates. Again, bear in mind that while it isn't cheap - no hair stylist gives you a refund for services already done! Common sense right? Apparently not. Like I said before, if you aren't happy for whatever reason; let her know and she'll fix it. You'll be hard pressed to try and find ANY salon or stylist that'll refund you for any reason. Booking is easy but she does book super fast so make sure you make your appts well in advance!
