When I came upon this place, it didn't take long to realize they had more options than what was on the menu. After speaking with a gentleman behind the counter, I was able to order local cuisine, such as boiled cod with chickpeas and an egg, a traditional Christmas time meal. Don't let the "boiled" part scare you, it's really good, especially with a drizzling of olive oil. Although the menu did not specify, they do have a full bar and I was able to get a well-made gin and tonic. For dessert he recommended AMARELINHO (BOLACHA, OVOS, CANELA), which paired well with my cappuccino. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of the place. By the time I was done I was satisfied and very happy with my traditional meal.

After venturing out from town by car to explore a couple of their vineyards, some of which were recently replanted after being impacted by the extensive fires that swept the area in 2017, we walked through the small winery to see how things were done. It was harvest time so the place had that great fall winery smell and there were tanks of juice starting their fermenting process. The leisurely tasting was conducted on a picnic table in the shade of an ancient lemon tree just steps from the winery. Like so many of the artisan places, don't expect some Napa-styled tasting room, instead plan for delicious wines made with great care. Over the course of an hour or so we tasted through their wonderful collection starting with whites and a fruity rose then continuing on to some special reds. We enjoyed all of the wines. To make things even better, the winemaker had set out some very local cheese and meats that paired beautifully with the wines. Wonderful and memorable visit. I understand that a couple of the wines are distributed in the U.S. but I wish I could have brought back a case of these treasures.

The outdoor seating was popular even in December because the weather was lovely. There were a couple of people on their laptops, along with us and a family who had recently moved to Portugal from Canada. We appreciated the outdoor seating because we had our two dogs with us. I had an unusual 3 cheese grilled cheese (it had cream cheese as one of the three) and my husband had a Portuguese version of shakshuka. We had cappuccinos and tea as well. Service was extremely friendly. There were multiple desserts and light savory options. It is a nice place to go for coffee and brunch.

It is highly recommended if you tour middle of the Portugal. It is between Curia Palace Hotel and Aveiro. The tour cost $3 include the museum, wine tasting, and underground cellar. It is well worth the money. The museum is at the next door. The map of the train station show each destination and stop including the central station. The museum stations include African art, mineral, fossil, calcite, jade, blue tile and more. I like wood fossil room. It has some character. They has designated a pink room for their rose bubble wine. We also past through a old tunnel full of how the old bottle was place. I like one of the room with different shapes of mirrors reflecting the light. It is beautiful when they reflected to the floor. The cellar includes the process of turn the bottle quarter turn to allow the alcohol progress smoothly. We have tour the bubble wine, XO, regular wine area. It is impressive. The best part is to taste their wine, bubble wine and sangria. Love it. The wine here are bargains.
