Only opened in 1899, it is one of London's youngest mainline terminal stations. Beatles fans will recognize it as the opening location of their first film, A Hard Day's Night. Though much has changed since 1964, any true Beatles fan will enjoy imagining the Beatles running for a train with a mob of screaming birds in their wake. Walking the historic platforms, only recently expanded, I was overwhelmed with the everyday beauty and usefulness of a national transit system.

This was our 3rd visit to London and we just loved this station and it's dual, very convenient…read morelines. First, the Piccadilly is direct from LHR. So that is already a plus, no need for the Heathrow Express or the Elizabeth Line. You have access to Cromwell Road for a short stroll to the Natural History Museum & the V&A. Stores in Kensington, north to Kensington High Street, Notting Hill is walkable, you can head west to Richmond etc. The station is also completely accessible, where you do not have any steps from platform to street, which not every station can say. Right outside of the station are a few fast food stores and pubs. That side of Cromwell is not particularly lovely, but when you cross you can feel that it is more residential and less commercial. With the Piccadilly & District Lines together, you can navigate to many areas of the city. I liked staying near Earl's Court and preferred it to the more Eastern parts of the city near Tower Bridge or Shoreditch.

Not to be confused with Northwark, which is, well, more northerly…read more It's a wonderful neighbourhood close to all the museums and one stop up from Elephant & Castle where my nightclub is, and a hair's breadth from Waterloo, and well within walking distance of Waterloo Station. So all things considered it's a great station and looks shiny and new in every regard, and in that regard it looks more like a Los Angeles or Washington D.C station than it does a London Station.

In December 2013, I stayed at the Best Western The Cromwell. It has since been rebranded as Ibis Styles London Gloucester Road. The underground station that I took every day as a tourist was Gloucester Road. I lucked out with this tube station having three lines: - Piccadilly - Circle - District I got me everywhere I wanted to. It was a cheap way to get around the city. Service was efficient. This station had friendly staff helping tourists like me. I got immediate help when I was trying to figure out how to ride it. I was encouraged to get an Oyster card, which allows you to load whatever amount of money you'd like. I used it riding the underground and surface buses. I reloaded it once and the person helping me out was great, too. I remember taking a lot of stairs to get to various platforms. I don't recall ever taking a lift (elevator) or seeing one. It is an older station, but it worked nicely. I took the Piccadilly line the most. I visited M&M's World three times, so this line became my favourite out of the three. I stayed in a cool neighbourhood with this station being around the corner from the hotel. Across from it was a Waitrose. I always enjoy frequenting a grocery store. This one was awesome and I'm glad that it's still around. I always felt safe riding the underground and frequenting this station. I'd stay in this area in a heartbeat when I'm ready to head back to London. (30)

Gloucester Road Tube Station is located in South Kensington on... you've guessed it, Gloucester…read moreRoad. It is in Fare Zone 1 and is served by the Circle and District and Piccadilly Lines. The history of the station dates back a long way to opening in 1868 with the Metropolitan District Railway; the interior is pretty with lots of exposed bricks and the heritage information of the station, it feels unique and different to many other stations on the network. The station is in two parts with the sub-surface and deep-level platforms, the deep-level platforms do have lift access, but the entire station is not step-free, so if you require access, I would certainly advise you to check before you travel, I only use the steps on this occasion. The station, while large, has an easy-to-follow layout which means you can get from the street to the platform quickly, without stress. There's also a Blank Street Coffee inside the station, which is a great place to get a drink before heading on your train. 4* - I like this station, it has some history to it, it's easy to get around and the Blank Street by the ticket hall is handy too.

High Street Kensington tube station serves the Circle and District Lines on the London Underground,…read moreit is in Zone 1 and is the ideal location for the shops and restaurants located in Kensington, including two of my favourites - Whole Foods and Dishoom. It features a small shopping arcade which includes a Pret a Manger, which has a small seating area too, ideal to grab a coffee or sandwich to take on your train, or to sit down with one. PRO TIP: Touch in and out on your contactless card. It pretty much works out cheaper than purchasing a travel card, and it will cap after you've spent so much on all transport in and around London. The platform area is pretty generic and nothing too exciting, however, the layout of the station is straightforward, and you can get in and out rather quickly. I don't recall seeing an elevator as I just took the steps but this station doesn't appear to be step-free so plan accordingly if you have luggage and access needs. 4* - It serves a nice area of London if you're looking to grab something to eat or shop somewhere with less of a touristy feel, the shopping arcade is cute and it is a decent station overall.

Some wouldn't, but St John's Would…read more This is a lovely station in Northwest London, close to Abbey Road Studios, so that's what a lot of people use it for, as well as the cricket ground which is not my thing. It's one of many great old stations that are very deep underground and one of the better ones I've reviewed. But not deeper underground, otherwise that would be Jamiroquai.

I can only give St John's Wood Tube station one star due to yet another service disruption…read moreyesterday at 7 PM. It is unacceptable to pass through the barriers, pay with an Oyster card, and only then be told that trains are not running. The staff saw us paying, but then called us while we were going down the stairs, and we had to argue to get a refund. The information service is extremely poor and often delayed. Considering how expensive the Tube is, travel should be reliable, but it is becoming more and more frustrating. I had an important appointment scheduled months in advance, and because of this disruption, I had to quickly change my plans and take a bus, still arriving late. While traveling by bus across London, there were ongoing roadworks with construction vehicles parked, causing terrible traffic. On top of that, inconsiderate drivers ignored traffic lights and blocked buses. The worst part is that there was not a single police vehicle in sight to manage the area--this chaos can only be described as a jungle. This is an unacceptable service for anyone with commitments who pays a high price to travel in London. Peter

I could quite well be because they were built around the same time, and are also termini. Mind you, Uxbridge actually is much, much more lively than Cockfosters, but I suspect that is because Cockfosters is actually a suburb as opposed to Uxbridge, which feels much more like a village.
