I first discovered the Persian Rug Centre about 8 years ago when I needed a new rug for a new house…read moreI'd moved into. Someone suggested 'the rug shop' in Selly Oak so I popped in on the off chance, I wouldn't go anywhere else now! This is not the cheapest place to buy a rug, in fact some of their prices are absolutely staggering, but the sheer quality and workmanship that has gone into each rug makes it well worth the money. You'll get your first taste of what to expect as soon as you look at the exterior of the shop, rugs are hung in the windows and also displayed outside in the drier months. The choice of rugs will draw you into the shop, and I defy you to walk away without buying anything! There is a good selection of modern and classically styled rugs, most with a definite Arabic design in a huge range of colours which will compliment any living room. The designs are stunning, some are simply patterned and others depict scenes from unknown books and texts. Absolutely beautiful. There are also a wide range of plain rugs from thick furry rugs to more basic woven works which are more towards the budget end of the range. I have bought seven or eight rugs from them over the years, both for myself and as gifts, and have never had cause to complain about anything. There are never any loose threads or bad stitching on any of the rugs and they are of the highest quality. I love the fact that there is such a wide range of sizes available as rugs are one of those things where one size definitely does not fit all, I had cause recently to look for a long thin rug for my mother in laws hallway and I found the perfect thing at the Persian Rug Centre whereas I have never before seen a rug with these very particular dimensions. You can expect to pay around £60 for the cheapest rug in here, which will probably be one of their plainer options, and prices will then rise according to the brand or thickness of the ruf you want to buy. I have seen rugs in here priced at £400 and £500, and these are absolutely stunning although just a bit over budget for me! The staff in the Persian Rug Centre are extremely knowledgeable about the rugs they sell, an Asian family who are always happy to chat to customers about the rug making traditions and will help you make an ideal purchase. I always feel that they are not forcing me into buying anything and on the odd occasion when I have not been able to make my mind up I have been urged to go away and think about it, a novelty these days as usually this kind of shop will keep you hanging around as they are so desperate for a sale! Next time I need a rug I will definitely be taking a trip to the Persian Rug Centre, I'm actually considering buying my sister a rug for Christmas as I'm sick of tripping over her tatty rag rug in the living room - I'm sure I can find something in this special little shop to suit her eclectic tastes!

Are you a carpet or hard floor type of person? I prefer a mixture and NEVER carpet in the bathroom…read moreor toilet! I took a trip to Solo Flooring Centre recently and I was impressed with this family run business offering a friendly and flexible approach to my flooring needs. They have an excellent range of floor type; carpet (obviously), hardwood flooring, laminate, vinyl, natural flooring, rugs and carpet tile are among the list on offer. I was shopping for hardwood and opted for the handcrafted collection from Kersaint Cobb and Company. I was shown and fell in love with the handscraped type and learned that this is a manufacturing technique where the timber is worked on by hand to uniquely scrape and contour the surface to give a truly weathered and aged look. This was £25.00 per square metre. I was impressed with my visit simply because of the range on offer and the knowledgeable staff. You could say when it comes to flooring this company has it covered!!

Solo carpets are very good until you have a complaint and then they blame anything but themselves…read more I recently had vinyl fitted on my bathroom floor and paid to have the old vinyl taken up and disposed of. When the job was completed I was horrified to find the new vinyl was fitted on top of the old. I complained that was not my instructions and was told it was, Then I could not open or close the door and was told the money I paid for the removal of the old vinyl would be used to pay a carpenter to plane the door. I didn't get anywhere with the shop no sorry no nothing, like I say they are very good until something goes wrong so be waned. P White
