The room I had was one of the best rooms in Whitby (and the biggest in the area, according to…read morebooking.com)... I lucked out however as I was originally meant to be in one room but due to a change in plans, checked in a day early and got given another room of the same type, however, it was the same room I saw on booking.com when I booked and the one-room I wanted and hoped for all along, and I got it - but that was just dumb luck and a change in plans that made that happen.
The only reason(s) why this hotel doesn't get 5/5 from me -
The Wi-Fi was fast, but, had an adult content blocker.. It's a pub, I'm an adult, we're all adults, why on Earth do they have this, I'd never know, thankfully, we live in a world with free proxy servers online to fool the internet into thinking you're somewhere else, but, had it not have been for the proxy server way around their imposed problem and had I've had to browse the internet under their terms, I'd have given this place 3 stars (or less), but the problem was easily overcome.
I heard noises from Karaoke Night when I stayed there, but rather than fight it, joined it; I figured, if there was a party going on, I may as well join it.
Had I have wanted an early night that night, I would have been annoyed, but I didn't need an early night that night so joined in, and the Karaoke was great and the patrons and fellow guests I got to meet all week were great, nice vibes with happy friendly people.
The food at the breakfast buffet could have been better, the bacon was chewy and the egg tasted as if someone microwaved it, but other than that, great hotel, will book again, but, only if I can get that room I liked; I even made a note of what room number it was.
This place doesn't have a room for holding luggage, which was a bit annoying, however, this place has a fantastic location across the road from the Coastliner and yards from the train station...
It was so close to my coach out (the 840 Coastliner) that it dawned on me for traveling back to London; I only had to wear my coat waiting for that bus that begins its journey across the road; once onboard I took off my coat and was able to travel back to South London in just a T-shirt (in November)! considering I'd be as good as inside all day from one mode of transport to the another all the way to my house, that was in Thornton Heath, London on the other side of the country, in a T-shirt in November.
"Inside" on the bus, "inside" at the station platform's waiting room waiting for the train, "inside" when on the train, "inside" and warmest on the London Underground, "inside" walking up to National Rail/My commuter train and "inside" riding my commuter train home... So that was convenient if you're from London and perhaps haven't heard of Whitby, I would use this hotel again, London Kings Cross - York / York to Whitby either bus or by train - if you miss the Transdev Coastliner 840 bus don't worry, the Transpennine train from York, change in Thornaby to a Northern train going to Redcar & Whitby to Whitby, but be sure to sit in the Whitby part of this train as it breaks in two and half of it goes off to Redcar; if you arrive in Whitby from York Station by train or 840 Coastliner bus; each mode of transport conveniently puts you at this hotel.
The George Hotel doesn't accommodate for pets though, so, if I returned to Whitby with a friend who does have a dog (and would love the prospect of taking her dog with her since it's still the UK so no pets passport or quarantine required) she couldn't stay at this hotel, that's not to say I wouldn't, so, I'd love to use this again and who says me and my friend have to use the same place? ;)
