Best Fries in Sturgeon and way better than Riv across the street. Good Poutine too.

CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS!!!! Always ask for a receipt ! It certainly is the "heart" of Marten River. It's also the only interesting place in Marten River!…read more My friends and I ended up stopping at the Trapper Trading Post involuntarily during a camping trip two months ago. Were it not for a traffic jam caused by some genius trying to overtake a truck and causing both vehicles to crash into each other several kilometres down the highway, it's likely that we never would have visited this place. That being said, I'm glad I visited, because this is what small-town Ontario is all about. You want weird local newspapers filled with fluff content? This is your joint right here. Need some booze? This is a licensed LCBO retailer - with a whopping two aisles of booze to choose from. Want some weird knick-knacks or joke items so you can have the infamy of crowing about how you stopped here? Make this your first stop. It says something when the only other places in this "town" are a chipstand and a fire station/town hall (closed, of course) across the street, so there was little to do other than check out the nearby lake and mill around the store. For what it's worth, the service is very good (the cashier there apparently has "contacts" in the OPP, which she was bragging about to great effect as she tried to relay information and updates to visitors) and the selection isn't all that bad. I can see this being a weird, quirkly place to stop at if you need something quick or are in dire need of supplies. Just don't go out of your way for it if you don't have to. 3/5.

My experience at Gerry's General Store started when my dog's collar broke…read more We were camping in Restoule Provincial Park, and dogs are supposed to be "on leash at all times". Well, that is difficult when the collar is broken! We were using a rope as a tie, but our poor dog is a rescue, and the rope seemed to spook her. I decided to embark on a search for a dog collar. I thought that I would have to drive 40 minutes to North Bay, but when I went through the town of Restoule, I spied Gerry's General Store. Their sign advertised "A Little Bit of Everything", so I decided to put them to the test. "I don't imagine you have this, but I need a dog collar." "Oh, right over here, in the dog section", replied the friendly and helpful woman working at the counter. Sure enough, I found the perfect, sturdy collar in just the right size. My daughter and I spent some time looking through the store, and I was hoping to find some sort of cake for her birthday the next day. No luck on that front, but my daughter spied some edible cookie dough, which more than satisfied the need for a celebratory dessert. They supply local needs and also those of people camping or passing through. Gerry's is also an LCBO outlet, and I was able to buy a good Chilean wine to have with our steak the next day. Plenty of camping supplies, refrigerators with food, and also a bewildering selection of hardware. They also have clothing for sale. (If your clothes get soaked while camping, you can buy an entire set of clothing here!) I was expecting outrageously high prices, but we needed that collar at any price. I paid $10 for a great dog collar, which is on par with any Toronto pet store prices. Aside from "A Little Bit of Everything", their slogan could be "Something For Everyone." Gerry's is conveniently located, with plenty of parking, and easy exits to pull on to the highway. Keep in mind, however, that - though the store is small - the layout can be a bit confusing and cramped with "A Little Bit of Everything". (Not a real problem by any means, but something to be aware of so that you can be prepared on your first visit.) If you are at Restoule Provincial Park and an essential piece of your equipment breaks (or you simply need to stock up on something), then check Gerry's before making the trek to North Bay.
