The carousel that you can ride!
    Silvershark C.

Great place to see a wide selection of toys, plus a memory lane of old toys! The have a carousel that you can ride! The ride is only $3.00 per person! The staff is very friendly! The restrooms are clean! Plenty of parking! They also have mini golf in the warmer months!

HERMEY DOESN'T LIKE TO MAKE TOYS (RTRNR) *all visits have been pre-pandemic* If Willy Wonka, Santa, and Child's Play's Chucky had a baby, it would be "The Best Toy Store in MN", home of 20,000 sq ft of pure imagination and old, creepy dolls....but sadly no chocolate river. Lark Toys is where kids come to frolic, and adults revisit their childhood through Memory Lane, a stroll back in time via cherished antique amusements (but no misfit toys) from green army men to a Doctor Who Police Box. Meander through an expansive bookstore, wooden heirloom toys, unique stuffed animals, activity stations, Matryoshka dolls, a science room and beyond to find treasures for everyone on your nice list. Next up, a carousel ride! Begin with a spin on unique creatures hand carved by the original owners. $2 Rides run every half hour. If the carousel line is long, munch on hamburgers, ice cream, or fudge from Lark's cafe while you wait. Head to the candy store if your little Slugworth fancies a Snozberry, jelly beans, or taffies instead. The adventure then spills outdoors to an 18-hole mini golf course, miniature llamas, and a rocket for future astronauts to blast into the stratosphere! There's no limit to the fun! Lark Toys is fabulous entertainment for the whole family. Plan to spend at least a couple hours here, and just like Chucky...you should always come back. I give it 5 Everlasting Gobstoppers and a Red Ryder BB gun. "You'll shoot your eye out!"

I checked out this place after seeing it on the tv and I loved how whimsical this place is! They not only have toys, they also sell games, books, candy, and ice cream. The carousel was unique because it has a variety of creatures to choose from to ride. I found the decor to be epic and I found myself always looking in all directions at all times so I didn't miss anything. I would totally recommend this place!

I love Lark Toys. Honestly, if you can't find it here it probably doesn't exist. They have toys that I'm surprised they still make (paper dolls). I love browsing the vintage toy cases. I picked up a few Christmas items while browsing. They have mini golf outside. The indoor carousel seemed very popular and drew many children with timed rides. They offer snacks, fudge and a gift shop. Masks are required, as well as social distancing. They have a handwashing station and hand sanitizer inside the entrance.

My family and I stopped in here on a rainy day during our stay in Read's Landing. We were so surprised at the size and wonder of LARK Toys! We spent hours checking out every space and my kids have been asking to go back. The carousel was such a beautiful surprise and I highly recommend taking the time to ride it. We'll be back for mini golf sometime soon! We left with rocks, books, toys, candy and dish towels for me- haha! There is really something for everyone.

OMG this place is incredible! Room after room of antique and vintage toys with all kinds of new toys for every kid you can imagine. They even make their own beautiful wooden toys!!! There's a candy shop as well as an incredible carousel for the whole family to ride. Absolutely fantastic place to

Here's what you do: Sometime in mid-October, pack some snacks, some tunes (I wouldn't presume to tell you which ones, but Springsteen's We Shall Overcome is a great album--I'm just sayin'....), and grab a couple of kids--preferably some with a strong sense of wonder and a low sense of entitlement. Head south on Highway 61, past Hastings (ah-ah-ah! skip the Casino!), through Red Wing (feel free to stop for antiques, pottery, and a shot with the giant boot). Keep on along the mighty Mississippi, enjoying the changing leaves, the bluffs, and valleys, on through Lake City (birthplace of water skiing), where the river widens into Lake Pepin. As you pass through Wabasha, be ready, as you're about to hit Kellogg, where you'll turn right on County Road 18, and immediately left, heading into the nation's largest independent toy store--a shop, museum, mini-golf center, and entertainment venue worthy of a day-trip. Once there, dig in: Explore the science and nature room. Read and reminisce in the book store (I'm a librarian, and I use this well-selected collection for reading ideas for my own children). Check out the highest-quality arts & crafts supplies, doll houses, make believe items, developmental toys, dress-up toys, disguises, building toys, board games, puzzles, outdoor toys, indoor toys, wooden toys, tin toys, planes, trains, and automobiles, balls, word games, paper dolls, tin lunch boxes, nesting dolls, {deep breath} and once you've torn your kiddoes away from all these rooms, head to the Baby Boomer Room to shop and reminisce from your own childhood favorites. Gad, you're tired by now! You might want to grab a snack--basics like soda, hot dogs, ice cream. Sadly, they've caved to the big giant head of tourism and now offer fudge. But you're not done. The standout of Lark's is their carousel. Each creature was hand carved by the now-retired original owners, and then hand painted and stained. Each is a work of art, and shares equal parts Minnesota sensibility with fantasy flourish. Runs every half hour. Still not done! Lining the walls of this entire building are antique or vintage toys and games. They are pleasingly placed and will spark a memory in every one of you, unless as a child, you were only allowed a stick and a rock. But wait! There's still more. If you choose Door #1, you may find yourself on a mini golf course. And Door #2 might lead you to greeting the house llamas, who have taken over where the former resident pig left off. Whew! That's a lotta toys! But what a lot of memories you're carrying home with you--memories, and happy little kids. You *were* able to drag away the kids, weren't you?

    Wizard figure on Lark carousel

Located in rural southeastern Minnesota, this may be one of the last of a vanishing breed of toy stores that have not become cookie-cutter franchises. Lark emphasizes selling toys that inspire the imagination rather than the usual mass-produced Barbies and gun-toting action figures. It is also a toy museum, bookstore and mini-amusement park. Its greatest showcase is the old-fashioned wood carousel, each figure meticulously crafted out of a single piece of wood. The wizard riding a dragon is my favorite. The carousel turns on every 30 minutes and will ride with 1 or 2 passengers, but only at those preset time intervals. It is not unusual to see buses of people or children coming to visit. There is a snack & souvenir shop as well. The entire place is like an indoor mall, with separate sections for their own line of hand-crafted toys, as well as books, puzzles, candy, science kits, and the antique toys on display. There's even a Baby Boomer Heaven, which holds a collection of tin wind-up toys, space-oriented toys, die cast cars and other memorabilia from their childhood. We visit this place every year on our journey along Highway 61. Be sure to see "Gip," their pig, who's the official mascot of the store. There is also a resident cat in the building.

I stayed past 7 pm, which is when the mall closes daily. However, this bookstore closes daily at 8 pm. Awesome! This B&N is at the food court. You can enter the store without going through the mall. I had just finished eating dinner at the food court, so I took the mall entrance. The selection of reduced books and other items is this store's strength. I picked up a Sip by S'well bottle for $10, which is unheard of. One of their bottles that keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for many hours normally goes for $20, at least. I needed one to fill up at the airport and loved the marble design that I got. I gravitated towards the Pusheen section. The plushies were adorable. I had some willpower and did not get any. There are a lot of plushies at this store, from BT21, to Harry Potter. I loved seeing them all. My favourite discovery was the music section. You can still listen to CDs here. I haven't seen that setup in a decade. I loved looking at the records (vinyl) and turntables. I was so happy. This store is huge. It has a full cafe with seating. I enjoyed my time browsing. I had to figure out where to pay. The payment area by the mall was unstaffed. There was an information desk smack in the middle of the store. Nearby was the second payment area. I had the nicest woman at the checkout. She found my name in the system after she got my phone number. If you sign up for a B&N membership, you get 15% off everything. I tend to shop here often that this membership has paid for itself and more. She placed my water bottle in a plastic bag and wished me a nice evening. I reciprocated and left the store, heading to my car through the mall. I love this store in my old stomping ground. I will definitely return and maybe stay a bit longer than an hour next time. (35)

"Fat Stacks" In…read moreWinona there was a bookstore With Al Franken fans filling the floor 300 souls packed Between the book stacks Then they exited out the back door "Yeah, I'm checking you out," I muttered in my head as I stood pressed against a swarm of steamy bodies, some half-wrapped around book stacks. All were waiting breathlessly...the excitement was palpable. I'm sure at least one of them was licking their lips. No, that's not a scene out of a horribly-written romance novel, but it is what came to mind after staring at "The Dastardly Duke" and "I Adored a Lord" for 45 minutes as random body parts bumped up against me at Paperback and Pieces. At least the books proved better visuals than looking at a sea of heads while listening from the center of the fan crowd to the muffled musings of our Minnesota Senator, there promoting his book, "Al Franken, Giant of the Senate". He's good enough. He's smart enough. And gosh darn it, people like him! All this standing still gave me plenty of time to contemplate the décor and layout of Winona's oldest bookstore. Partly because I was trying to take "aerial" photos of the crowd by standing on my tiptoes in order to try to find an open spot to move to in the store, I noticed the tops of the shelves that lined the walls...specifically, how bare they were. This would have been a perfect area to spruce up the store's shelf esteem with either book-related or holiday vignettes. I also noticed that the shelf that housed the lord-loving-lady book was flanked by flocks of other romance-book-filled shelves...perhaps more than what seems normal for a store that doesn't require you to go behind a curtain to check out the merch. The second thing that came to mind while boxed in place was that there was no way this crowd was compliant with building occupancy fire codes, but shhhhhhhush....I'm not telling (and alas, no citations were given). While it may not be novel to hold an author event in a bookstore, I give props to this independent shop for tackling this circus--it was a rare treat to be entitled to meet the man of Stuart Smalley fame. However, I would recommend to the event coordinators involved to book a larger venue when the author is a celebrity comedian/politician. I'm also not entirely sure why there weren't bookstore employees walking through the lines outside with mobile check out devices in hand--it would have greatly helped the wait and lack of crowd control inside. But what the store lacks in crowd control tactics and style, they more than make up for in substance. Bring in your used books and score some trade credit deals as well! Here's an abbreviated list of contents of fun treasures you will find inside: Book lights Candles Coloring books to familiarize yourself with the impending zombpocalypse Cool 3-D Animal Bookmarks Greeting cards And more! Come in and wish the owner luck on her next chapter in life as she has put this bookstore up for sale. But that's another story. ~The Nosy Norwegian, Sniffing out good deals and dust from brittle book pages so that you don't have to!
