The only slightly annoying bit is the transition from the 3rd green to the 4th tee - if you don't know the course it is quite difficult to find. Thankfully there was a queue on the 1st tee (which you walk by on the way) to direct us the first time around.

The reason I like to reintroduce myself to golf via Stepaside most years is that it is a very forgiving course!! Its one of the longer courses out there with a good number of par 4's and a few 5's... The fairways are long and wide and although the greens are a bit unkept at times its a super course considering how cheap it is! And cause its public no membership required just rock up on the morning and hope the rest of Dublin doesn't have the same golfing ambitions as you that morning!

Which you could maybe go to afterwards... In a quest to find some cool shizzle to do over the summer that won't leave me regretful and full of fear, I thought I'd give this SUP thing a bash. I tried it last year in Dollymount on one of the most amazing days, and it was sublime, as would anything be in that unexpected heat. So back I went over southside this time, on a not so amazing day, to see if stand up paddle boarding is still as fun when the sun is playing hide and go seek. I can now say, actually, yeah it is. We went for a bit of a cruise just around the jetty area, in and out of the boats, and along the inlet. We had the pleasure of seeing a massive seal dip in and out of the water next to us, and I even went for a few dips into the water (perhaps accidentally..!), but with the super-warm wetsuits we were given, I really didn't mind. Aboveboard itself is hidden down a bit of a higgledypiggeldy laneway just up from the Dun Laoighaire DART. It's been done up to be really super cute. They have a decking area on top of the building that you can sit on and look at the sea, and there are lots of little touches like artificial turf in the changing rooms, super cute bathrooms, and even a blistering hot heater that will blast you if you need it. As I said, the equipment is all top of the range - I've never been given wet suit shoe things before, and they're deadly. You hardly feel the water at all! The instructors and owners are all lovely, friendly, patient and fun. Just what you want when you're undertaking something like this. They also do kite surfing which I'd love to try, and I think I may like more than SUP to be honest. My problem with SUP is that it's a little too... calm for me. It was so nice to be out in the water though and I'll definitely do it again, but kite surfing will be next on the agenda. They do group sessions and one on ones. If you're looking for something different to do with your longer evenings, I'd highly recommend giving them a shout.

Its slightly hard to find at the back of a car parts yard but well worth the search. We tried the stand up paddle boarding and I loved loved loved it. We received a friendly welcome and demo on arrival, all very straightforward. We then had a short walk down to the west pier in our wet suits. Its quite nerve wracking as a first timer but once your in the water its really chilled with great views across the sea. The instructor is extremely helpful at giving you tips to not fall in, I wasn't in the humor for a swim that day..... (yes!!! I didn't go in haha). Give it a shot, will defo be back.

There is a lot of pride in this gaelic club for both the football and the hurling teams. you will often see a ball soar up into sight above the walls of the pitches as you drive by. the club house is a nice spot too and well worth having a drink in after watching a game.

It is an absolute joke! They never ever answer the phone, and yet when you go into the gym there are multiple staff at the reception. If you email them, they will take over a month to respond. If you ask one of the receptionist for anything (the most basic of requests) they haven't a clue and direct you to call the number for Westwood, to which you will NEVER get an answer. The gym itself is nice and all that, but I actually miss Flyefit now and regret paying the amount Ive paid on a membership with them due to the terrible customer service. Also just something to watch out for, the day you visit the gym with an interest of joining, you will be shown around by a staff member who has all the time in the world for you and will dazzle you with all of the perks etc of joining Westwood, but don't be fooled by this ! Best thing that gives the edge over other places is access to tennis courts as well as loads of good and free classes. Never seems too busy either so you can always do what you need to! The spinning classes are really good, the instructors get really into them. There is also a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi to relax after a workout!

Gym classes are often cancelled without advance notice, since they aren't enough personal trainers available. A lot of money has gone into adding more machinery but the basics are still underfunded. There at better gyms in the area at a fraction of the cost.

We were signed up for one of their beginner courses, and ended up doing roughly 10 weeks of training. It's a pretty informal place, you can arrange training sessions at very short notice. If a few of your party drop out or you get some seriously bad weather, you can just hit the rowing machines in the gym. The trainers are very friendly and extremely patient. They'll have you zipping up and down the Liffey in no time!
