BAM! 5 STARS!! I've…read morebeen a swimmer on and off since I was about 5 years old (ON for most of my teenage years, OFF when I discovered beer and women, ON again when I took up triathlon to set myself a new challenge), so I have a good idea what makes a good swimming pool, and a fair idea what makes a good gym. Let's start at the start - this is a private members gym; you can't walk in off the street unless you're signed in by a member. You can sign up for some classes by themselves (spin, pilates, etc) as a non-member, but most of the people here are fully paying members. That being said, the membership packages are very flexible - it's basically €230 for an individual for a year of a basic membership, plus either pay-as-you-go, or whatever package you want to put on top for gym/swim/etc. I've been a member since February and I could not be more impressed to be honest. The place is always spotless, the staff are always friendly, the other patrons are always grand (no steroid junkies here!), and the classes are very good; particularly the spin classes which come as part of your full membership. Every facility you could want is here as well: gym, pool, football pitches, tennis and badminton courts, sauna, leisure suite... you name it, it's there! Now onto the pool itself. It's a standard 25 meter pool with a small viewing gallery. The 'adult swim' sessions are the best to go to if you want to go for a proper swim - three lanes will be marked out and most people stick to the slow, medium & fast lanes (it's a pet peeve of mine when they don't!). All in all, a great job in a handy location, and you can customise your own package or pay-as-you-go after the initial membership fee. Only negative is that you have to pay up-front rather than by Direct Debit, but it's not enough of a grievance to deter me from awarding the big 5!

Ah Sportsco is great! I really love it! If you are not a member you can pay €10 per class or gym. I found the membership expensive, and didn't like that they don't have student rates. but well... The staff are very helpful and super friendly. They help you and are interested in that you are doing things right and that is good for you. I consider the space very very clean, spacious, comfortable and modern.

All around us were pretty serious tennis players who I probably impressed with my funny way of swinging the racket. I stopped counting the lost balls. The changing room was smelly. But hey - it's sport. Men are sweating. What do you expect?

It has fantastic new changing rooms and showers. The club offers a great mix of competitive tennis and social tennis. It also caters for all levels. I myself was a beginner in 2006 and thanks to great coaching I now love playing league. The club is genuinely very friendly and it is very easy to meet people due to the many tennis events and coaching that take place weekly. I have been a member of a few other tennis clubs over the year due to house moves but this is the friendliest club that I have been a member of. Drop in a on Saturday morning at 10.30am and have a hit and meet some players. Then stay for tea/coffee/biscuits and a chat afterwards. The club also runs regular 30 euro per month trial offers. The club has 11 outdoor synthetic courts that are very well maintained.

Upstairs is the increasingly grubby Crunch Fitness, which does have low gym fees. The main areas on the ground floor are used by the various clubs for everything from fencing to wallclimbing to trampolening (always fun to watch when you're working out) and the facilities are quite cheap for students and staff although the price does go up for outsiders. There are also various squash and badminton courts in the building as well as changing rooms, lockers, showers and a sauna... Like the others said there's no pool yet, but there will soon be (well in several years) in an adjacent building. Outside the building are an array of all-weather pitches which are also put to good use - these are run by the sports centre

I did a rock climbing course here at the weekend…read more €25 get's you two hours on the beginners course where you learn all the essentials like how to tie yourself into your harness. Tying the figure eight knot. Belaying and learning lovely terms such as life rope and death rope. I'm not going to lie it was pretty knicker pissing stuff to climb to the top of the wall, I fell once and dangled like a crab but as I'm stubborn off I went again. I really am hooked to the rush now. As I am not a member of UCD nor a past student I can opt to pay €8 each time I go and €3 rental for the harness which I think is pretty decent as my schedule is all over the place and it allows me to see if I would rather buy membership, also €11 would go in a flash in a pub... The only way the Irish can verify good value. My issues were: 1. You have to pay the fee in person in cash which really is a nightmare and rather worrying that a place of higher education hasn't caught up to with modern payment options i.e the internet. 2. They really should say that you should come with a friend, not that my group weren't friendly. The issue is it's really a two person sport and even though or teacher said you could just rock up and ask to join someone, I dunno especially if you are a beginner like me.
