Wonderful place to visit and the people that work there so nice and helpful, place super clean and quiet if you looking for peaceful environment to read a book

LTL is definitely on top of my list of favorite places I have found. Hidden behind gates, you have to make sure to call the number listed before you are able to enter. The person who answers the phone will have to allow you access through the gate. Once I entered, the scenery all around Lanier grounds were breathtaking. You can see gardens and lush greenery surrounding the library. The building itself had the greenest vines growing all along the library building. Basically a scene from a Harry Potter movie. When entering, you must sign in as a guest. Someone will be there to greet you and give interesting facts about the library. I was told the cieling was hand painted. FROM THEIR WEBSITE: "The Lanier Theological Library is a 17,000 sq. ft research library located in Northwest Houston, Texas. The LTL has a capacity of over 100,000 volumes and specializes in Archaeology, Biblical Studies, Church History, the Dead Dea Scrolls". Super interesting and well preserved artifacts." Another area you are permitted to explore is directly next to the library where the chapel sits. BEAUTIFUL! From their website "a replica of a 500 A.D. Byzantine chapel. The chapel's ceilings feature scenes from the Bible painted by Texas artist Richard McCluskey". When visiting Lanier library you almost felt like you weren't even near the Houston area. I would definitely recommend to visit this extraordinary library and everything Lanier offers. I did see they were adding anither massive building toward the back of the library along with what looks to be a reception area and a tall castle like structure standing alone. What seems like many additions and new things to come!

Amazing. Words can't describe it. Pictures won't do it justice. You have to see this place for yourself. If I could spend all day here it wouldn't be long enough...I'm so grateful this place was close by. We drove for 30-40 min. And it was worth every second. Just amazing.

Such a beautiful and quiet place! Visited here with a friend and the librarian was super sweet and told us all about the history of the place. Seems like a great place to get a good study session in. It is all philosophical and religious text but the collection is impressive.

This library is like a little European oasis in the middle of Texas! I found this place while looking for places to study in north Houston. It's a little difficult to get into, however. You need to call the number found on their website and have the staff member open the gate for you. The parking lot is to the left of the entrance. I had to go through an orientation of some sort to lay down some ground rules and sign a guestbook, which was completely understandable. Unlike other reviewers, I didn't experience any hostility from the staff. I don't think food and uncovered drinks were allowed on the premises. The entire area was absolutely beautiful. The library was a mini museum and houses first editions and letters from C.S. Lewis in addition to replicas of Christian artifacts. The most impressive piece was a fragment from an original Dead Sea scroll. The chapel was breathtaking. It's an exact replica of a chapel in Turkey, and the detail put into it was incredible. For a moment, I truly believed I was in Europe. I spent about half an hour there just studying the artwork and reflecting. Although it's open during inconvenient hours, please keep in mind that this establishment is completely free of charge. I would have gladly paid money for this visit and the Lanier family is very generous for keeping their library free and open to the public.

Stunning religious library. It's beautiful, it's eerie and it's romantic all rolled into one amazing establishment. There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said in the previous reviews, but it's Definitely not a place to bring the kids though because there were lots of people studying.

If you want to pretend like you're not in Houston, you should visit the Lanier Theological Library. Other reviewers have given great descriptions of how to find the place, so I'll shed some light instead on why you should actually make the trek out here. 1. It doesn't look like Houston. It looks like Europe! There's a tiny "town" outside the library you can walk through up to the library, including a beautiful chapel, little river, beautifully lit up trees, and even train tracks. This place is idyllic. Inside, it's got a warm feel with wood paneling, cozy rugs, and chandelier lighting...oh and those cool lamps that you pull a chain to turn on. 2. Amenities. This place is amazing in terms of comforts. There's a kitchen with a Keurig and a free K-cup for each patron, a microwave/fridge, cups, and hot and cold water. The bathrooms are squeaky clean, too. WiFi is free although not super fast. 3. Quiet. No kids running around, no screamers (you know, the people who are screaming to have conversations in crowded coffee shops...), no espresso machines or grinders. If you want a study break, take a walk outside around the library and the chapel. The only loud thing was the squeaking of the floors when people walked across them. 4. So many good study spots. If you can't score your own by-the-window study nook, there are several rooms filled with excellent sturdy tables and plenty of seats. There is a second floor but it is a stone cold normal storage space with a table and rather ugly gray walls so stick to the first floor. If you have signed in with the visitor's office, feel free to pop in and out without having to re-sign in. I got hungry halfway through my study session here and I picked up some Chick fil A nearby and brought it back to eat while studying without any problems. Hours are limited to weekdays and they close at 5pm except Tuesdays when they close at 9pm. The Tuesday late nights don't hold around the holidays though so call ahead to confirm their hours if you're hoping to stay late on a Tuesday!

    Even prettier in person!

One would think that as someone who doesn't read, the library is the last place I'd be. However,…read moreI've found the it to be a lot more pleasant than meets the eye and there are plenty of reasons to stop by. For instance: :: This location is the flagship of all HPL locations and consists of multiple buildings that include the Central Library as well. It is a massive city block with ample amounts of outdoor space with underground parking. :: The library card, MYLink, is completely free for Texas residents. Anyone who isn't living here can score a $40 annual membership. The benefits include free access to many of the libraries programs and amenities. This includes reserving rooms for study or meetings, indoor / outdoor WiFi, and even take home tablets and laptops. :: Speaking of the WiFi, it's fast. Taking a video call while streaming HD vids with zero lag is a wonderful thing. The coverage is extensive, with outdoor and indoor connectivity and I haven't found any dead zones just yet. :: Their outdoor area aka "Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza" is really a nice spot to gather and/or spend time in especially during great weather. :: The library closes every day at 6pm from Monday-Thursday and 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Late night library visits are totally not a thing. :: This might not seem obvious to first timers, but this is a lowkey excellent place for people watching. There are many interesting characters floating around the library, some of whom are utilizing it for shelter, restrooms, and likely the WiFi and computer usage. That being said, finding someone passed out in one of the meeting rooms and also out cold on a bench in the same day is rather impressive. :: My passport was expiring and renewing the process couldn't have been easier than filing my application here. They took my photo, helped with my paperowrk, and was very diligent with the timeline for rushed and regular delivery options. While it may seem cliché, this HPL is worth the visit since they have a little something for everyone. The staff is pleasant and it really is a quiet place to learn a little something, while doing a lot.

I criticize Houston a lot for its poor public planning, but the Public Library System is one thing…read morethey've done marvelously. This library is sleek, modern, and absolutely beautiful. Color tinted windows brighten up the gloomiest and rainiest of days. Artsy geometric themes line the walls, ceilings, and furniture. Whatever your reason for visiting, the interior provides an abundant amount of space for it. More importantly than aesthetics, this library goes above and beyond in the resources it provides. It has passport services, computers, printers, study spaces, and books, similar to most libraries. What most libraries don't have though? Video recording studios, podcast rooms, and sound engineering booths. All fully equipped with instruments, all soundproof, and all FREE. OF. CHARGE. I absolutely love seeing this available. It provides people a creative outlet and a chance to feel heard. Other available gadgets include 3D printers, Cricut machines, and premium media editing software. C.J. and several other employees are at your service if you ever need a tutorial. According to the American Enterprise Institute, library visits have decreased by roughly 31% since 2000. I wouldn't have been able to tell based on my visit today. I saw plenty of parents, kids, and students lost in their own worlds. Free third spaces (locations other than work and home) have become increasingly rare; turns out that if you build a pretty library that's valuable to all, the community will come. I can't emphasize enough how cool this library is. It's a rare sight of tax dollars being utilized incredibly effectively. This isn't some privileged resource in River Oaks or Memorial Village; it's located in the unassuming suburbs of Westbury just outside of I-610. You'll leave this library impressed one way or the other. See for yourself.

Some of the floors look dusty and the library needs some more optimally designed study tables/work spaces. However, the first floor has some really cool individual pod seats for reading (not pictured). Not a bad library. I would return if in the vicinity and needing a free productive space. To be honest, I expected something more out of a library in River Oaks, as the Houston Public Library system has established some absolutely beautiful buildings in less prosperous neighborhoods.
