I arrived for my dental appointment today 15 minutes early and had filled out all the health…read morerelated paperwork online before hand. I scheduled the appointment over a month ago for "earliest available". The first one available was for today, February 1 at 9 am. So, I've waited over a month for this appointment. I broke a tooth a while back, and it wasn't hurting, so no big deal. I can wait. Then, about a week before Christmas, a filling came out. So, I really needed to see the Dr. Things didn't hurt, but I needed things taken care of. Well, my experience today made me doubt the professionalism of the Dr's and staff at Blacksburg Smiles. If you like waiting over a month for an appointment, then wait 40 minutes in the exam cubicle after being escorted in for your 9 am appointment; if you enjoy hearing the Dr.'s conversations with another patient in the next cubicle concerning how it was important to "get the job done while she had him in the chair" and it was "OK that his appointment went long" because he could benefit from the procedure. (I guess my needs weren't important.) You'll love Blacksburg Smiles! I scheduled the appointment for the morning, hoping I wouldn't have to wait too long because I know that things can get behind later in the day, but after waiting 40 minutes before seeing a technician and getting X-rays and 50 minutes before the Dr. showed up, I was expecting better care than what I received. Was I so disappointed! After a quick exam of my teeth issues which didn't hurt before the exam, but were very painful on the right side afterward, she told me that she didn't have time today to do any of the procedures I needed today. She had to keep her next appointment, (by this time it was after 10 in the morning). I'd been waiting on her to see me for quite a while! I was patient and waited. When she told me that she couldn't do anything today, I told her that I was aware that she chose to use time allotted for me on her previous appointment. I had heard her conversation with the previous patient. I didn't think the was very professional. Later today, during a phone call to Blacksburg Smiles, I mentioned to the receptionist that calling or texting someone that appointments were pushed back would be a considerate thing to do. Everyone's time is important! He complained that he didn't have a way to know what was going on in the exam rooms, they were upstairs and unless someone comes down to tell him that things are backed up, he has no way of knowing. (Which is total BS. Sounds like someone needs a tutorial on how to use the text app on his phone.) I told him that the Dr had used my appointment time to work on someone else and I was left listening to the conversation in the next cubicle. The receptionist told me that "It wasn't really my time, it was the Dr's time!" Really? I'm paying her a fee for a service. (Not that I got service.) It's not like she's doing this out of the kindness of her heart! All I was asking for was a common courtesy, letting me know when things are running behind so as I wouldn't be left waiting, twiddling my thumbs. Several other Dr's offices call and let patients know that things have been delayed, so as not to inconvenience their patients. Guess the Caste system is alive and well at Blacksburg Smiles, the elites (Drs & office staff) there can't be bothered with us little peons. BTW, the dental technician who took my x-rays was very pleasant and not part of the elitist group at BS. BS = Blacksburg Smiles!

This practice saw me through untold trauma/drama when I first moved to Blacksburg and had experienced major dental issues. Their care and referrals to area specialists were invaluable. I thought I had good dental care in Minnesota, but these people are waaaaay better.

Received an "Explanation of Benefits" indicating that Loren Cook was "in Network". Subsequent service by "Samuel Wolfe" was identified on EOB as "Out of Network"! Dr Wolfe and the technician who cleaned my teeth were professional and competent, but would not recommend the office for their "bait and switch" tactics. By the way, after many calls and complaints about their complicated and incorrect billing, they "terminated" me as a patient. Interestingly, when I complained that Dr Wolfe was "out of network" despite their initial assurances that the office accepted my insurance, I was told that Dr Wolfe does accept my insurance at "other offices", just not theirs. Stay away!

I offered to pay out of pocket and they still would not give me the appointment once they learned I had Medicaid. I have been trying to get a Medicaid covered dental cleaning for my son for 2 1/2 years, but none of their network dentists will accept him as a patient. I gave up and just scraped up payment and paid a non-Medicaid dentist out of pocket so his teeth wouldn't rot. Nice ethics, Cook Dentistry. Get off the network if you aren't going to live up to your claim to be a Medicaid dentist.

I think they don't care because frankly there is not a lot of competition in this area. But be careful not all of their dental hygienists know what they are doing. Most recently I went in for a routine cleaning and instead of my usual dental hygienist Alex Simpson. The entire time I was there she kept changing her grip, her hand kept shaking, and she kept hitting my gums and causing pain. Twice she pulled my lip with her water pick. Fortunately, it didn't get stuck so there was no damage. Eventually I asked her to stop midway. I was sure she will injure me. I asked her to get the doctor to so that he can just do the medical checkup. He indirectly defended her by claiming that my gums are just sensitive because there is build up between the gums and the teeth. Now I don't believe this explanation because in over 20 years of going to a dentist I have never experienced this. Furthermore, the office would not give me the hygienist's license number so I could file a complaint. First they claimed that they are not allowed to give it out. Then they claimed that they weren't even allowed to have it. Not sure if either of these things are true. Looks like the time is ripe for a new dentist to move into this area.
