I wanted to better connect with the language associated with my heritage, so I decided to invest the time and money to learn Tagalog. I took the Level 1 hybrid course with Rhya in early summer 2026. Overall, it provided a great foundation for introductory grammar and vocab for Tagalog. By the end of the first course, you quickly become comfortable being able to ask simple questions (like where are you from? what's your name?), answering with affirmative/negation statements, and even being able to ask "how much/how many" with Tagalog numbers right off the bat. The class structure felt perfect, with the small class sizes. The course was very interactive, as we were constantly engaging and practicing the language throughout each course. And of course, it provided a safe space to make mistakes and grow with the language. If we made a mistake, Rhya would walk us through our mistake to help understand where it was and why the correct answer was provided. The class structure was also perfect for my work schedule. There were times I had to travel for work and miss a lecture. Because I was signed up for the hybrid course, I was provided class recordings after each session, allowing me to catch up and not feel left behind. The sessions are definitely catered to working adults, with all courses being offered in the evenings. Each session was 90 mins long each week for 7 weeks. I learned a lot from Level 1, and I'm excited to continue on to Level 2!

The instructor that I had, Keiko is great. She is very patient and always willing to help. (The courses can be fast though depending the language and the books being used). The other people there are always very polite and helpful as well. The facility, while basic, is clean and conducive to learning. They seem to use a mix of media (e.g. slides, Quizlet, etc. which is good). FYI - it is near SJC - San Jose Int'l airport and the jets taking off can be somewhat loud at times.

Just like many other ESL institutions, basically you will learn English. However, what makes the school different from others is the effectiveness of the program. All the grammar, listening and reading skills, and writing techniques are practical, easy to learn and sufficient for you to use daily and academically. You might doubt it at first, but believe me, after just about 1 year of studying at the school, I was able to get TOEFL score of 90 at my first try. A score of 80 is a standard for a master degree. It could reach 100 at some highly competitive universities. But I want to emphasize the importance of your self-practice also. You need to use it in some way even though there is no homework or an assignment. Your self-practice is important for you not to forget what you have learned. Another special thing about the school is the devotion that all instructors have to their students. They are willing to help you as long as you need their assistance. You can ask them to write recommendation letters, or ask them about other tests that you cannot study at CalCC. I studied GRE myself at the same time I took English classes at CalCC. I can say that all the help from knowledgeable instructors had helped me get high enough score on GRE examination to get admission into my MBA. Obviously, the program itself and the constant assistance from instructors provide you more than enough English competency to survive and succeed in higher education environment. Last, the school offers affordability and friendly environment. Tuition is relatively competitive I can say. The class is friendly and interactive. There is a kitchen for you to cook occasionally, but you will need dean's permission for it. I have a busy schedule at home and at work so committing to a weekly in-class session on weekends or weeknights is almost impossible. I wouldn't be able to catch up on homework in addition of my business travels. Besides, a lot of local schools are for younger children. For adults, a lot of them are tailored to college enrolled students or business travel. Very few are made for recreational study, and offered in-person classes. 1. Flexibility - zoom classes Luckily, Adroit College offers online zoom classes mix with in-person sessions, which solves half my problems! I can call in zoom anywhere in the world. My quizzes and assignments are handed in online. Most class work and notes are shared in Google classroom. If you miss a class ? there is the zoom recording where you can rewind the dialogue many times! This helps studying in my own time. Flexibility is the key! 2 Focus on fundamental Dr. Koo is a traditional teacher. If you believe most teaching these days says 애 and 에 are the same pronunciation, you will definitely get a different perspective here. Dr.Koo is solid in her knowledge. She is flexible in her teaching but meticulous in her standard. There are many online courses preaching the easy way out, which ignores small differences because people will 'understand'; but I find that knowing the fundamental of words , pronunciations and expansion of some simplified forms of writing, helps expanding my gramma structure and easily pickup new gramma without coerce myself remembering all these rules. They are indeed very systematic if you understand the basic. Thanks to Dr.Koo 3. Friendly , small classes I must admit the progress is rather slow with a bunch of easy-going learners like us. You need to be discipline and review your course every week. Homework is not heavy. Quizzes are take-home style. You work on your own pace which is perfect for my circumstances as a mother of 3. If you are expecting spoon feed highly stressed get it done style, this won't be for you. My classmates ask a lot of questions and so do I. I try to practice a few lines of causal conversation every class randomly to my teacher or classmates. In other Korean schools, you will not have these opportunities.. Their focus is to rush through the curriculum so you get your exam or TOPIK1 soon. Learning is rather secondary in those Korean schools. I find here is friendly and teachers are patience. 4. Anything bad? yes, that's where the .5 is. The school is not as nice as you see in De Anza college. The cultural activities are not as vast as some of other ones. That's mainly due to the smaller enrollment and smaller Korean community here compare to SoCal (Irvine, OC). It is a chicken and egg question. I believe when the reputation grows again , there will be more participants and after class activities will be more fun. I look forward to this day! Overall, I highly recommend Adroit if you truly want to learn Korean differ from traditional schooling. They offer kpop, conversation only, and many special classes fitting for your learning goal. This is not a dry boring school where my kids will deter from learning their mother tongue. Come for a trial class and you'll be the judge !

If you have any background in a language I would suggest you refresh yourself and test into something other than the intro course. Starting at the beginning was perfect for me since I have never studied French before, but it was very, very basic stuff. Had I taken that level for a language I had previously studied I think I would have been bored. Pros: - Conveniently located to the 84 and 101 (and Caltrain?) - Convenient times after work - Great way to sample a new language to see if you're really interested in it. - You get to keep the text book (they are used, mine had writing it...) Cons: - When you are only meeting once a week it's really easy to say: "I'll study this weekend." "I'll study tomorrow." "Oh crap, class is tonight, I better study." - Cost - it's roughly $40 a class (give or take) so if you're going to stick with it long term it's going to add up. A college course may be cheaper (though with the way college tuition is these days maybe not?). Private lessons seem to run $30-$40+ an hour, so I think their costs are reasonable. It just adds up over time, which hurts my head when I do the math... - $50 one time set-up fee per student

Some sounds spoken in the American English language are not very clear for other language speakers…read more For example, for some Latin language speakers, usually words such as "bad / bed" and "sheep/ ship" sound literally the same. As a Latin language speaker myself, one can imagine the kind of misunderstanding some conversations I had would cause, right? I had tried taking classes with several teachers before finding Sheila, and none were able to help me understand the difference of these sounds, much less teach me how to repeat and imitate these sounds myself. Then, I finally met Sheila. Sheila was able to help me recognize the differences of many english sounds which I didn't know how to tell one from the other, and she also helped me recognize sounds/words I was mispronouncing without even knowing it. She also helped me repeat these sounds myself, and it amazes me how her knowledge is so broad when it comes to english in all aspects! During our classes, she would explain to me the positioning of the lips and the tongue, the opening of the mouth and where I should "feel" the sound coming from when saying vowels and consonants sounds out loud. She knows a level of detail about pronunciation that I didn't even know existed, and even though it took a while for my ears to get trained and recognize these different sounds, I can see my accent is getting more natural (and smooth!) by the day with our classes! What's also incredible about Sheila is that, additionally, she has so much English knowledge that goes way beyond pronunciation. She has been teaching me and my husband some advanced grammar rules that sometimes we'd overlook and make mistakes. She has also been helping us with our "flow" when speaking and reading, showing us how English speakers add rhythm to the phrases, which words to emphasize, how to pronounce some words we were mispronouncing, amongst so many other things! And to keep the classes interesting, we have even read books together, and discussed not only the grammar and vocabulary of those books, but also some deeper literature topics and discussed the interpretation of what we had just read! She has deep knowledge of the English language in so many different aspects that I get amazed and surprised at every new topic she finds for us to cover in our classes. I have been taking classes for a few years now, and I know I still have a long way to go before losing my accent and sounding more like a native speaker, but I can also see how far I have gotten since I started taking these classes.
