Set in the heart of the North Laines, its first-floor positioning allows you to sit above the hubbub of the busy streets. Inside you can choose to sit at a table or slink into the more intimate diner-style booths. Best of all it offers dining on the quaint balcony area with a pretty view of the artsy Kensington Gardens below. A pedestrianised street, not an actual garden. A reliable option, Kensingstons offers what you'd expect with a bit more thrown in to boot. You'll be spoilt for choice with every possible cooked breakfast combination - from light to full, meaty to veggie - and a selection of lunchtime bites. I opted for the pick of the bunch - the Big Meat Breakfast comprising of 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausages, 1 hash brown, half a grilled tomato, beans and they throw in toast and a hot drink for just £6 in total. It's your usual fry-up fodder, but it hits the spot and doesn't break the bank. As it was a weekday morning I managed to swoop upon an outside table and received my food after just a short wait. Our waiter was a chirpy character. Unsurprisingly, he took a shine to the guest of honour - my sociable little puppy. I'm used to this set-up. Feeling like a member of J-Lo's entourage, graciously holding the leash as he skips upon his back legs in delight (the dog, not the waiter). The atmosphere is generally upbeat and the staff are chatty and attentive. It does get very busy at the weekend; so do expect a queue and a wait for tables at peak times. The main stickler for me is that the toilet is rather bizarrely downstairs in an adjoining shop. Save yourself the trip and go on your way out. In all, the café offers what would normally pass as 3-star fare, but the location, price and choice make it worth your while.

This is a humble independent cafe selling decent coffee and excellent home cooked food. It looks the same inside and out, and seems to follow the same philosophy - locally sourced ingredients, products freshly baked on site etc. On this visit we tried a homemade sausage roll and a butternut squash, spinach, feta and pine nut tart. Both were absolutely delicious. We were asked if we wanted them warmed up, and instead of stuffing them in the microwave for 30 seconds like so many other places do, they actually properly reheated them in the oven, retaining the correct flavour and texture - it's the little touches that make the difference. My lemmongrass tea was delicious and my OH approved of his Americano. Our server was sweet and friendly. We sat outside on the few tables overlooking the street and soaked up some sunshine. I really hope this place survives in it's current format, it has a good ethos and great tasting food too!

One of the places I've always wanted to try is the V&H Café in Hove. Which I actually live somewhat close to. And yet, it took me 6 months of living here to go. Anyway, the point is, I went. And about 50% off their offerings are gluten free. Hooray! We decided to actually go for a bit of brunch after the Pride parade before Katy needed to go to work. We popped in and the place had a few people inside but was fairly quiet. I'm not sure if this was normal for a Saturday morning, or if it was just a bit quiet because everyone was at the parade. The decor is nothing exciting, but it is comfortable and relaxed. They had plenty of gluten free cakes on display and all of the breakfasts and toasties can be made gluten free. I was feeling a brunch vibe, so I went for a bacon breakfast sandwich. It was very yummy! Perfect to gobble down, as my parade sunburn fully developed. Katy had a savoury tart which wasn't gluten free so I forgot to take a photo of it. Whoops. Bad food blogger! We also took home a slice of the toffee apple cake, which is both gluten free and vegan. I liked it quite a lot, as I am into fruity cakes. Katy doesn't like cake in general (what a weirdo), so she wasn't a big fan. Overall, my impression was pretty average. For good comfort food, and high gluten free availability, this is an excellent choice. But if you're looking for a cute spot to catch up with your friends and take lovely Instagram pics, there are plenty of prettier options in Brighton and Hove.

Billies, Billies, Billies. It's official. I'm in love…read more Everyone will tell you about how wonderful this cute little cafe was but until you experience it for yourself I don't think you understand the true amazingness of Billies. I went here on the weekend with a fellow Yelper and boy was I impressed! We spotted Billies not because of a big sign or a bright storefront, but because of the queue of hungry and hopeful people all lined up politely outside it at 11am on a Sunday morning. Surely not? I thought to myself - not very used to having to wine in line for my breakfast in Brighton. But yes, there it was... a big old queue. Now, if I'm honest, at this point my friend and I had a moment of weakness and discussed whether to move on somewhere else but (thankfully!) we stuck around... The sun was shining and the cafe is situated on one of Brighton's prettier streets, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, where streets are lined with pretty white houses and big beautiful trees. The people queing with us were friendly and equally as excited by the prospect of Billies famous hash, so in truth the waiting process was pleasant enough. It only took us about 10-15 minutes to be seated as we came as a pair (much to the dismay of larger groups who momentarily considered abandoning their friends and families in favour of food). We were seated at a pretty little table in the window, perfect for watching the world go by on this sunny Sunday, as we waited for our food. We both order the has - me going for the Mexican one with guac and salsa (and a side of bacon... shh!) and my friend going for the Farmhouse, I believe. It wasn't a long wait for the food to arrive, considering how packed the place was, and we were content waiting with our Americanos and gossip. The food arrived looking and smelling incredible and, upon tasting, it did not disappoint! My hash was spicy, filling and unusual (in a good way) and I only managed about half of it before asking for a doggy bag. For a mere £8 (or thereabouts) you get at least double portions, I'd say and this is coming for a girl not afraid of finishing her plate! I was so impressed with it - it really hit the spot! The staff were friendly too, while rushed off their feet, and my total (hash, with added bacon, and coffee) came to around £10, which is not bad at all considering I took practically a full meal home with me as well. I really loved my experience here! I felt as if I was in NYC brunching in style, but without those measly portions! This is hearty, tasty food, served with a smile in a very pretty (albeit busy) little cafe! Go and it try it please!!!
