School District of Philadelphia - Cook-Wissahickon Public School

School District of Philadelphia

I attended the School District of Philadelphia's open Career Fair on May 20, 2025 through Indeed,…read morebecause Mayor Cherelle Parker spoke of The District's need to hire teachers at my commencement ceremony at Rosemont College last month. I showed up on time and dressed professionally and with my resume. Half of the schools were not present during the start of the event and/or reps showed up late. I walked around to speak to most of the reps that were present. I noticed that more time was spent with Caucasian applicants and I felt that the mostly Black reps/principals were not as interested in speaking with me, despite my having a Master's degree and being a Black woman representative of what the mostly minority student population would benefit from seeing in the classroom. I gave my resume to about three reps but did not hear back from any of them, probably because most were seeking Math/Special Education teachers with certificates and I am not certified and have an English/Reading background, which I was honest about in person. I also wrote this down when I applied on Indeed, and it would have been nice for The School District in its response to my Indeed application and invitation to the event to be transparent about the specific subjects they were hiring for, so that I would not have wasted my time and money traveling from NJ to Philly. When I received an email from Amber Minor-Tisdale, SR. Project Manager for Talent Recruitment & Selection in the Office of Talent, asking for my feedback on the event, I filled out the survey and responded to her email directly about my experience. She responded initially with apologies and asked what other job I applied for (I also applied for the position of Special Projects Assistant I (50026178) directly on The District's website before the event, since I have years of data entry/office experience). I responded to her email about the other position on May 29, 2025 and when I did not hear another response, followed up with a request for an update on June 6, 2025, to which I have not received another response from Ms. Minor-Tisdale nor anyone from The School District of Philadelphia. The least they could do is to follow up with candidates who take the time to show up to their calls for applicants, especially because the need for good teachers is great. The District cannot afford to be indifferent or disrespectful to the very people they depend on to educate our future. I certainly would not advise any candidate to waste his/her time and resources going to any event hosted by The School District of Philadelphia unless he/she personally knows someone within the system and can get through by way of nepotism. -E.J. I plead and begged them the entire school year to please move him to another classroom. It took until the end of the school year and my son having a mental break down and having to admitted into a hospital for them to take it more seriously! Once he was discharged from the hospital, they finally listen to me and placed him another classroom, where he can be safe and happy coming to school. Moreover, this most recent school, I thought that things had improved. But unfortunately I found out that my son had water bottles thrown at his head and water dumped on him. He was also punched in the face with a visible mark and absolutely no one informed me that my son had been assaulted! They then even retaliated and sent me an email how my son was punching a teddy bear the week prior. It was highly unsettling that instead of acknowledging that they have failed him in this regard and instead of them coming up with a plan to stop the bullying, they decide to flip it on us instead. I'm sorry, but I would much rather my son take his frustration out on a teddy bear, rather then punching anyone in the face. This school is disgraceful. They have taught my child absolutely nothing in the 4 years he has been there. Do not send your child here if you want them to get an actual education. This is more of a wearhouse for children then an actual education all setting. Your child is not safe here and will not learn anything.I'm

The teachers there taught me a lot that I needed to know and how to function out in the world and how to hold onto a real job. I admit that I haven't visited lately but I can say that this school is good for those with special needs.

Delta School on Byberry Road in Northeast Philadelphia is an amazing place…read more It is a fully accredited school for children with special needs due to autism, neurologic or emotional issues that make mainstreaming them in public schools highly problematic. It has been around since 1958 on a lovely small campus. Children from surrounding Philadelphia, its suburbs, and New Jersey can send their students here for a quality education geared to their individual requirements. The administration, teachers, and staff are specialized and totally committed to their mission. I was fortunate to discover Delta School and its CEO, Stanley Stein, as part of the Newtown Creek Coalition's work to protect and preserve the natural watercourse that runs through our community. Delta owns property right along the Creek (smart investment), and our non-profit approached theirs about doing projects together to create an access to the Creek in a natural, inviting setting that could be utilized by walkers, hikers, bikers, and students. Open Space funding is available to make this happen, but it takes time and understanding of what is possible in exchange for what is given up. As the lead for this effort, I sought out Delta School and arranged a meeting to give them our vision, and their part in it if they wished to share. We are in preliminary discussions, but having the opportunity to visit the school, talk with the visionaries running it, and watch some of the students on campus, was heartwarming and laden with respectful appreciation of what was going on there. The world is a much better place for Delta School. May they continue to help children change their lives and prepare them for the road ahead.
