The breakfast buffet each morning is fantastic, and full of so many choices (boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, yogurts, bagels, waffles, fresh fruits, juices, etc. On the first floor, there is an enclosed pool on the inside of the hotel. Additionally, there is a small pub that serves only wine and beer. It's small and intimate. There are about five tables. The rooms are well-maintained, and I love that they keep everything eco-friendly. For example, they only change bedding every three days during your stay unless you request otherwise.

She found a suitable substitute and didn't even charge me for it. She is my Christmas angel. If her employer sees this they should do everything in their power to keep her. Maybe a raise or a bonus. Because of her I believe I'll have a wonderful vacation. Also we arrived early and they got us checked in. Not only checked in but in rooms next to each other. Another employee to recognize is Carol. She was working breakfast and was helpful with a couple of things. I.E. I asked for a wet washcloth because the napkins don't hold up well for large messes. She brought me a warm wet washcloth.

What an idyllic place to get away from the stress and strain. This rustic yet nicely appointed lodge is a great place to book for retreats! I stayed in a one bedroom suite with kitchen and electric fireplace. The room was clean and amenities included: filtered water in the room, free high-speed wifi, cable TV, fireplace, bathtub, and small workout room. Breakfast can be had downstairs with fresh fruit, Organic and gluten-free options, cereals, muffins, breads, yogurts, etc... **This is not a full-service hotel as the front desk is not staffed 24/7. However, I was provided with a contact number should I need anything and my key was waiting for me when I arrived late that evening. I was most impressed with how well I slept due to the quiet silence permeating the entire lodge. My meditation and Yoga practice felt deeper than anywhere I've experienced. This hotel is in the countryside just a couple miles from the municipal airport, 6 miles to the center of town (Fairfield). It's also close to Maharishi University of Management where students, faculty and staff practice Transcendental Meditation twice a day. There are no conveniences like a market, gas station or restaurant near the hotel. Most of the suites have kitchens and there are a few grocery stores in town. There are several wonderful restaurants in town as well. I would recommend this hotel to any traveller who is not too high-maintenance.

Virginia is a lovely host - present if you want her to be, and absent if you don't, which is something some other B&B's haven't figured out. :) The Stone Mansion is in a convenient location and much more comfortable than the hotels in the area. We can't wait to have a reason to stay there again!

When I used my phone to see our lodging options, I resigned myself to sleeping somewhere resembling low income housing. Then I saw the B&B tab on TripAdvisor and the McNeill Stone Mansion B&B was presented with beautiful rooms just across the street. Gary and Virginia were very accommodating to our up in the air schedule, the rooms and mansion are beautiful, and the breakfast is fantastic. Take the time to get to know the history of the home and look through the numerous before and during photos of its restoration. I don't know when we will be back, but we will be back. I apologize for the photos. My next review should be of the image handling of an iPhone. I'm tired of fighting the image rotation.

The innkeeper was kind and welcoming, but also gave us space...breakfast was plentiful--eggs, sausage, toast, and coffee. They do take special dietary requests, and asked us about that when we arrived... Our room (we stayed in the main house) was decorated with antiques and wonderful old quilts, and faced the iron wagon bridge spanning the Des Moines River...we walked back and forth across this bridge several times. Next to the inn are several interesting shops with varying hours of operation...the general store was fun to browse through, and sells awesome homemade fudge. We did not have an in-room refrigerator, and didn't expect one but would recommend bringing a small cooler if wanting to keep drinks or food cold for more than a few hours (I did notice a mini fridge in the dining room)....also, most of the toiletries are provided upon request only. The inn has a colorful past which was fun to read about. If wanting a peaceful and interesting getaway I'd highly recommend staying here!
