Lakewood Ranch Branch YMCA - YMCA Pool

I wanted to compliment the Director and counselors (and childcare staff) at the Lakewood Ranch…read moreBrand YMCA. Having been both a camp counselor and camp director myself, I am extremely impressed with the way that the camps are run. I have a 13-year-old daughter who has an attended the half day basketball and volleyball camp. She is going to attend the soccer camp as well. Her basketball Camp began when all the other camps started as well. Despite multiple types of camps and many children, campers were quickly grouped and joined with their counselors and locations. I have been inside the center while camp is in session, and I am extremely impressed by the way communication works between staff members. Walkie talkies are constantly being used, and students are being counted and accounted for. I appreciate that the pool is used exclusively for campers during the day, to maintain camper safety. All counselors seem genuinely happy to be with their campers, and everything is extremely orderly. Counselors are bright and energetic in the morning at check in. My daughter's counselor Austin comes to check her out in the afternoon and always had a positive attitude and great things to say about her. He is personable and we have seen him outside of camp hours and he maintains the same composure and energy. I feel extremely safe allowing my children to attend camps and activities here. We are also extremely impressed with the childcare center. I have a 2 yr old that has been attending the Y for around 6 months. I drop her off with confidence to three knowledgeable, caring and friendly staff members. She is always happy at pick up and excited to attend. Prior to finding the Y, we were at LA Fitness, where we were extremely unhappy. On one occasion, the childcare supervisor allowed her to play for an unknown length of time in the bathroom. We picked her up soaking wet, with no explanation as to what happened. We still don't know if she was playing in the toilet or the sink. Needless to say, we canceled our LA Fitness membership that evening. As for the athletic club itself, members take pride in the club and are constantly wiping down machines before and after use. There are also staff members on hand who do the same. The group fitness classes are challenging, but also modifiable. The group fitness instructors are positive and energetic, and you feel great after a workout. We are so thrilled to have found the YMCA and are proud to be a part of it.

Larissa, the head of aquatics, is trying her best to improve the pool situation. She is friendly…read moreand has great ideas. I give her an A+. She needs more support in her efforts, however. Items that come to mind are: purchase new flag lines, refinish the pool deck, replace doors in the pump building, install a true water cooling system for the hot summer months, purchase new time clocks, and add new aquatic activities. Note that the pool water is very clean and the lifeguards are attentive. The Y will be competing for members with the county aquatics center opening this fall in Lakewood Ranch. I suggest the Y become more proactive before people cancel their memberships.

This was my first stop in to join my wife who is happily addicted to the exercise experience here…read more While it is a franchise, the folks who own here, Ruben and Roberta, are fun, friendly and diligent. Ruben is one of the instructors. The equipment is top notch, the instructors must complete a rigorous training program and observation - so you're in good hands. Focus is on form and technique to avoid injury and maximize the benefits of a 45 minute rowing class. It simulates actual skulling with displays showing your individual stats and the entire classes as well. Several types of classes - some that combine intervals of weight lifting and stretching with rowing - are offered. Great workout for legs, core and cardio. Be prepared, it's challenging for anyone not in shape!

If you are an early morning person or work afternoon hours this would work well in your schedule…read more I would like to see some late evening options or more weekend options than mornings . Even if just open row without a coach. Staff is very nice. Coaches are very personable. They say the classes are appropriate for beginners through advanced fitness levels. I would recommend the Restore classes which are limited if you are not in at least average fitness shape. When I first started they had some 30 minute express restore classes which I found challenging as a newbie. They have express signature classes as an option which incorporates light hand weights interspersed with rowing intervals. For more intense exercise options they have 45 minute full row classes. Price wise they are fair when comparing to other specialty/ boutique gyms. Multiple price points from $79 for 4 classes a month to $159 unlimited. They will have specials on holidays, free into sessions and packages. They celebrate meter milestones! Holiday themed rows as well.
