Unfortunately, South Lanarkshire council did not agree and despite this being a recently built and pretty snazzy facility it falls down quite spectacularly on the basis that the selection of books is rotten. For the square footage of the premises the number of book shelves is depressing, there just aren't enough. However, if you need space to manoeuvre a small tank then you are in luck, this you could do easily. Finding something that you want to read might be slightly more difficult to execute. You could always use the book ordering service, if you don't mind waiting 8 weeks with nothing but the Corn Flakes packet to read. Unfortunately, the children's section is even worse than the adults and unlikely to instil a love of literature into any small hearts. Fortunately, they run weekly Bookbug singing classes so little people do learn to love the library even if they grow up spectacularly confused regarding all the cliches about being quiet. The saving grace of Carluke Library is the staff who really are lovely. They know both my girls by name and are always falling over themselves to help in anyway they can. I just wish they had the authority to buy some more bookcases and fill them up.

The Central Library is a great haven of peace and general silencio on George IV Bridge, if you're in that mood where loud noises and crowds and traffic are annoying you. It's a pretty big place, with several floors of...well...books, tables for reading and studying, and some computers as well. As long as you have a library card, you can get free internet access here for an hour or so. There's also Wi-Fi now, which has been brilliant for me, because I am the most susceptible person to distraction ever, so working at home can sometimes be almost impossible, and I struggle with cafes at the best of times too. There's just too many people to watch and outfits to analyse. Working at the library is always a good concentration call, and they have plenty of space for people to beaver away at their homework/articles/crossword etc. There's an awesome feeling of history to the building too, so while you're working away you can imagine yourself one day, after that long awaited intellectual breakthrough, being written about or being a writer and then placed in book form on one of the shelves. Everyone has a book in them and all that banter.

Sadly there is no free Wi-Fi at the moment and the staff could be friendlier but they're just small points for me. A city centre library should be open a few more evenings so those of us who work can use it more often. I'm sure there must be a way of closing off the art gallery so this can happen. Anyhoo, it is worth a visit as the sections also include graphic novels, modern classics, lgbt literature and everything in between. They can also order in books from other libraries.

It's quite busy during the day and has a good buzz about it, more like a cafe with books than a library with a cafe. Depending on what you're after, this will either be good or bad. Apart from their selection of books,CDs & DVDs being better than before they're doing more such as an afternoon craft programme for young children & a teenage chill time. There are a bank of PCs which are free and I believe MacMillan also come in. The only downside is no comfortable seating to make me want to come and stay a while. Maybe there's a reason for that but with only hard chairs & small study desks I didn't spend as long there as I would have liked.

The Glasgow Women's Library has moved around a lot in the last 25 years since it was first set up…read more It now has it's permanent premises in Bridgeton near the Eastern end of Glasgow Green. The building is lovely and perfect for housing a small library. It's a grass roots charitable organisation and the only one of it's kind in Scotland. As a lending library its focus is on women writers, feminism, the suffragette movement, LGBTQIA+ stories, and so on. However, it also has a carefully curated collection of artefacts and archive materials. It runs literacy programmes and works to improve adult education - empowering women is one of the key aims of the library and that empowerment is achieved through learning. They run a range of events all year round, from readings to walking tours. Most of this is done by volunteers although they do have a small number of permanent staff. Their opening hours are now a little longer than they used to be which makes it easier to visit (they open on Saturdays now and they open late on Thursdays). I've signed up for a library card, so I hope I'll get back soon.

The kids section is large and comprehensive, with all the favourites accounted for. However, special mention must go to the classics section which has a particularly extensive Dickens collection. Pretty much every newspaper is accounted for, as well as plenty of magazines and periodicals.

Conveniently located next to the hospital, Langside Library is a little more old fashioned than the…read morenew libraries that are springing up across Glasgow: even the book selection is dated, with the Mind Body and Spirit Section specialising in the Abrahamic religions and the graphic novel section a mere whimper. It isn't a great place for the specialist, unless it it is in crime novels or science fiction, where they have some idiosyncratic choices, and the CDs are mostly mainstream pop with a bit of classical. But the staff are very helpful and, while it might be a sad comment, it is peaceful and underused. Besides, they have a large section for kids, set away from the rest of the building, which keeps the atmosphere relaxed.

As well as being a functioning part of the uni, Old College is almost a tourist attraction in its…read moreown right. For one thing, it's so huge and imposing that without even meaning to you'll find yourself using it as a landmark for directing you to places. For me, Old College will always stick in my memory as the place I finished my last university exam, so it's not surprising that I'm giving it so many stars! But if you're even vaguely interested in architecture or law (as well as housing several libraries, Old College is also the uni Law School), it's well worth wandering through the quad and taking it in; it's pretty impressive. I think the uni also hire out certain rooms in here for conferences and other functions.

For years, I had been walking past it, but it wasn't until last year that I got a chance to actually see inside it. And what did I find? I found, one of the best public rooms in Scotland apparently - Playfair Library Hall. As you enter the court yard of Old College the entrance to the hall is on the left hand side. I was there for the swearing in ceremony of our new rector, and the hall was very ceremonial. It had roman styled pillars, busts of old academics, bookcases housing old books and a very large ceiling. The hall is very big and forces itself upon you with its brilliance! The hall itself is used for ceremonies and lunches by the universities hierarchy, however, if you get the opportunity to pay this hall a visit then please do so. It is a treasure which is not very well known and needs to be seen!
