Nickey's Wholesale Food Warehouse

Nickey's Wholesale Food Warehouse

City of South Salt Lake

Alright. I know this is weird, but I love discount grocery stores. Like seriously, I could spend an…read morehour or two checking 'em out and it would probably be the highlight of that day. There is something so fun about finding a great deal, and perhaps discount groceries are particularly thrilling right now as they are something one really needs, so there is little guilt about the spending. I found Nickey's on Facebook a while back, but they don't open until 10am, which is just so late for me (I like to get my weekend grocery shopping done first thing!), and it never happened to work out. Well, I finally stopped by last weekend. The name is no joke, as they are truly a warehouse, surrounded by a bunch of other SLC warehouses. Keep your eye out for their colorful truck and you won't miss 'em. Inside, you will first enter an odd lobby with a couch and TV, then up some stairs to the actual store. It is not cute, and parts of it are a bit of a mess (the walk in freezer is straight up cringey), but if willing to look, you will find some treasures. I was quickly greeted by a nice woman who asked if I have dogs and directed me to some dog treats they had on sale. Why yes I do, and you best bet I snatched up that 4lb box for $6. Next, I headed to the freezer, as I knew they carry local Soup Kitchen soups and stews. I checked the ingredients and they are clean, and you know they are serving the exact same thing at the restaurant, so why not enjoy in the comfort of your home? I also found a 40 oz bag of fresh spinach for $3 (still eating leftover creamed spinach!), some fancy cheeses for $2.50 a wedge, and a fragrant package of specialty on-stem oregano. Other exciting finds include Callebaut chocolate: Crispearls and Ruby Couverture, and restaurant-supply size jars of various condiments, salad dressings, sauces, etc. I am pretty picky about my meat so didn't check it out, but it is definitely cheap at Nickey's. Need a 25lb bag of turnips? They got you! Canned truffle shavings, pre-cut veggies of all sorts, 50lb of powdered milk, and also some power steering fluid? Yes, yes, yes, and yes! They frequently update their offerings and specials on Facebook, so give them a follow. I would say at least half the items are priced the same as a grocery store, and while plenty of goods are not expired and undamaged, many others are, so why would you pay the same price here? On the other hand, some stuff is crazy cheap, so you've really just got to go and see what there is to see. That's what makes it fun, right?

I would write a 0 star if I could but it wouldn't allow me. This store sells Very questionable food…read moreespecially their package items and in the meatbox. We have gone into the meatbox/freezer area, before and found cases that were broken open with meat exposed, we found cases of ice cream that had been broken with the ice cream exposed the breads that have been left open. There were fresh vegetables left out for sale that I wouldn't feed a pig. We bought some packaged food items like chips and cookies and other items that were rancid. Some of the meat looked like it had been thawed out and the blood ran to the bottom of the packaging area and then refrozen. The most recent experience with the owner of this company today, I asked if there was nitrates and nitrites in the bacon that he was selling and he laughed at me and told me that there were nitrates in vegetables. Obviously he has not done his research because people can have health issues when consuming too many nitrates and so the question was a Valid one, Yet he laughed and then blocked me how childish is that. So all in all I give this place a 0 rating we will never lay money down on the counter at this place again. I'll stop at this.

I've come to Bintz for years. This is the place a number of restaurants get their stuff from. There…read moreare times that you can really save money and either get things you just don't see at the standard kitchen store, or things where industrial restaurant quality is where it's at. I like some of the standardized storage containers. I've paid as much as $150 for a 1 quart D5 All Clad pan. One place you really don't want to spend the big bucks is non-stick frypans. The commercial ones go from stovetop to oven. Are balanced. And, are reasonably priced so you don't feel so bad when it has to be replaced. Bintz has Vollrath. They are good, and I've used them, but I do prefer the Tramontina's that I've gotten elsewhere. They are only open during "business" hours, so you have to make a bit of an effort to get here, but if you like visiting kitchen stores you owe it to yourself to get here. Oh, on this trip, I got the 1/8th sheet pans I needed for just a few bucks.

Everybody loves kitchen "stuff." You just do. It's a love similar to power tools, new tires, and…read morethe original Looney Toones cartoons. You can't explain it, it is just there. This place is kitchen crack to a cooking junkie. Need something a simple as a spatula? They have it. Want an industrial, restaurant, 4-place deep fryer? Check. Mixing bowls the size of a pinch pot to sizes big enough to toss the world's largest Caesar Salad. Anything and everything to stock a kitchen with the exception of the decorative roosters (why do people collect those, anyway?!?!) I find these guys exceptional for things you just need to do "big stuff." They have a great selection of food containers, steam table-type containers, and catering supplies. There isn't much they don't have and if you aren't in need of it today, they can get it for you. Best part about it? This restaurant supply is open to the public. No secret hand shakes, no purchase orders, no chef requirements. If you have the funds, they have the equipment. Heavy duty equipment that will last you a culinary lifetime.
