Then, like the proverbial buses, a couple of places came along at once - Cheeky Monkeys' Playbarn and Funky Funhouse. Funky Funhouse has a lot going for it - it's big, has lots of slides & swings etc, as well as separate areas for younger ones, plenty of space for adults to sit down and serves food and drinks for those that want. It is also easily accessible by car and conveniently located just outside the centre of Cambridge. Downsides ? None really. Prices (both for entry and refreshments) are reasonable, the toilets are clean and they do not allow the place to get overcrowded. The only mildly annoying things are: - kids are more likely to pick up some kind of bug after visiting, but that's just a fact of life - occasionally (especially on a wet weekend), you have to queue to get in, but again that's just a sign of how popular and successful it is Other than that, it just makes entertaing the kids a whole lot easier - they also do birthday parties for those of us who cannot face the idea of having our homes invaded by large numbers of over-excitable little monsters who have drunk too much orange squash.

It may be fine if you want to swim about and refresh on a hot day, but I wouldn't recommend it for lane swimming - provided you manage to be there when there actually are lanes, otherwise it feels like a video game, trying to avoid the bathers coming at you. It's also one of the most slippery pools I've ever seen, both on the floor and in the water: trying to kick back against the wall becomes an exercise in not twisting your ankle. The absence of a handle or something along the wall also makes cold-starts much less pleasant. Ear plugs are vital, if only to block off the noise echoing from all over the place and, while the changing rooms are relatively clean and functional, do NOT, under any circumstances, forget your oxygen if you intend to use the gents' toilets. The one redeeming feature is that there is a lot of free parking available - whether this is important in a city where everybody cycles or walks is irrelevant. In short, this is a valid place for casual swimming, but if you're after something more regular (and much nicer), spend the same amount and go to Parkside instead.

Alright, lemme give you the low down. This pool is pretty good. They've got a few lanes where…read morepeople can do laps. PROBLEMS: The fast lane is VERY fast and the slow lane is VERY SLOW. No real inbetween. Its also pretty expensive to swim here. SOLUTIONS: Come at lunchtime. Very few people in the lanes. In terms of £, get your fitness card and enter through the small turnstile right behind someone. Beep your card as you go through and even if you have no money on it you can pass through as the guy before you already opened up the turnstile. DO IT!

The toilets were pretty HORRID - no locks on the doors for one, and the food court is a nightmare - a massive queue for what is worse than school dinners. I have two girls, aged 4 and 7 and when they returned to the table saying a boy had slapped the eldest on the face and kicked the youngest and was swearing, we thought it best not to make too much of a fuss. They described him and I stood and watched for about 10 minutes, but he was no where in sight, so I sat back down. However, 5 minutes later, our 7 year old was in floods of tears and completely inconsolable (unusual for her). The boy had smacked her on the bottom so hard that it was stinging. We immediately informed the manager, and I saw him speaking to the boy and his mother. They were allowed to stay. I know the manager can't be responsible for the childs behaviour (who looked as though he was aged about 10) but they are responsible for safety. I still can't believe the mother didn't apologise, or leave the place. I could see them from my table and she allowed him to go back in and play - what mother would do that?! In her shoes I would have been so mortified and definitely wouldn't have allowed my child to stay and enjoy himself. Aside from that, the food is awful, and overpriced and toilets are always dirty.
