Confession: I heart Mami. It's one of my favorite restaurants in Turku. I've had lunch here (at…read moreleast) 3 times in the past 10 days. I think the wait staff is starting to recognize me. Lunch: - Choose from a soup, salad, meat, or fish course. (small/large portions for soups & salads) - One dessert option. Never disappointing. - Comes with tea/coffee. (choices include a cappuccino or cafe latte ... not only your typical brewed/drip coffee.) - Don't want to wait? Avoid the crowds and come after 12:30. (They're open until 15:00). Clarification: Soups & salads are Nothing like your boring watered-down chicken noodle soup (or whatever the equivalent is in Finland) and uninspired wilted greens. It's much more elevated than that. Think: celery soup with salmon tartare, goat cheese & cashew salad. I'm not a big salad person, but find myself diving into a bowl of crisp lettuce more often than not. And the portions are very generous. I'm usually good with a small soup/salad plus dessert. Which sets me back only 10-11€... such a bargain! If coming for dinner, make reservations!! A lot of the dishes, we realized, are highly reminiscent of traditional Finnish salmon soup. That is, they're based on big pieces of seafood placed under a big white broth. To be fair, this definitely means it's a spin on classic Finnish cuisine, with perfectly cooked seafood and the like. But for a cohesive four-course menu, it might have been nice to have something else. There's more to Finnish food than salmon soup. Another thing: bread was a bit weird. The portions were small and they seemed to compensate with the biggest pieces of bread I've ever seen, which looked more like American white bread than like anything Finnish. That was rather bizarre and confusing. But, still delicious food, prepared at a very consistent high level, and it really takes a Finnish spin on New Nordic.

Probably because of reflective ceiling panels. And half of the restaurant walls are sound-reflecting windows. But, the servers seem very attentive and quick. The chefs, in their t-shirts, baseball caps and aprons, are quite visible, working in the partially open kitchen, and assisting the servers with plate présentation. The chefs spent a lot of time in front of us, perfecting each dish with tweezers. Because, about a third of the presentations had a very meticulous, but specifically geometric, plating. Such as perfect circles of 40 circles, or teardrops, or ellipses. Personally, I encourage each Chef to execute and present their individual vision. But, maybe limit the number of plates that appear to be assembled with a protractor and compass. The scallop, cucumber and buttermilk dish was excellent, as was the 64th version (so far) of their signature "Fish Circle," of crab, whitefish, apple and beurre blanc. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and even the people we met while hanging out here were nice. It was a beautiful and cool summer day and we sat on the patio enjoying the sunshine. Vegetables grown in a green house here on the island were used to make the green salad and it was fresh and refreshing. Snails from France were used to make the tasty and garlicky escargot. The whitefish from the nearby island Houtskär was delicious and roasted with the skin on and served with a white wine cream sauce, mashed potatoes, roasted tomatoes, and vegetables. The fish was cooked perfectly and the skin was crispy. The smoked salmon soup was some of the best soup I have ever eaten. The lightly smoked flavor of the fish was fantastic in the creamy soup with potatoes and dill. Dark Archipelago Bread accompanied the soup and was very good, especially when dipped into the soup. It was the perfect meal for a cool summer day. We also enjoyed multiple good Finnish beers while relaxing outside in the sun. Joni, who was working at the restaurant, assured us that we were getting the best beers, the best food, and the best seat in the restaurant. I agree! The shop is cute with two levels - the upper level having a nice cozy set of chairs and lovely view of the market square. The deserts are always excellent - all that decadent flavor one would expect of American sweets. The shop owner and employees are friendly and it is always a pleasure to stop by when we drive up to Turku from Helsinki. We typically leave with 6 cupcakes from the drive back home at the end of the day.
