Before he died, it was his wish to be with our parents and he seemed sure that there was room for him. Just in case, I contacted the cemetery because I did not want any conflict to arise when the "at-need" time came. I became frustrated as the month of March arrived. I began to receive marketing emails from the company that operates and manages the cemetery on behalf of the salesperson. That prompted me to email the sales person to inquire about whether he found an answer to my question posed in February. Sadly, on May 1, that answer came after we had the funeral. In February, the salesperson indicated that he was sure there were "room for 4 souls" in the grave with my parents and he moved to quickly try to sell me on prepaying the grave opening fee and purchase other potential services. The same salesperson called me when we scheduled the service to introduce himself as the person who would be handling my brother's services. This became an unnecessary dispute that caused a lot of stress. While the cemetery "made an exception" to allow my brother to be buried with my parents, there still is something not right here. Another concern about my interactions with their area VP has arisen. He noted that there is no room on my parents' stone to add my brother's name. While that is true, it was also claimed there was no room for my brother to be buried but there was plenty of space for my brother's urn to be buried and there looks to be plenty of room for another stone to be placed. I gave the cemetery 2 stars--originally up from the 1 star I would give because I had a very positive experience with the cemetery's frontline staff when I visited the cemetery on May 6. Taras provided me excellent directions on how to navigate the large grounds so I could visit my great-grandparents' gravesite. His directions were excellent. He provided a map where he even drew a line with the best route to follow through the cemetery. Despite the overly aggressive sales tactics, I ended up having a great experience on the front-lines with Taras.

My family is buried there and for years the maintanence staff took very good care of it but things change over time. We had planted bushes as well as flowers that would reappear year after year & things were fine for decades but now for the sake of speed the gang mowers they use have wiped out the entire garden which we replanted and they mowed it over again. Talking with management the place is not doing well, they closed down their greenhouses and killed a decades old passion plant that was so beautiful that they had sold pieces that could be rooted and grow at your home. That was a sin. Everything today is on a steady decline and this graveyard can not escape it because the families who supported it are now buried there. Regardless it is worth considering for your loved one.

There are probably other fees there on top of the lot cost, so please call them and inquire. The cemetery is old, but nicely maintained. There is even wildlife walking around. On my two visits there I saw a beaver, a bunch of previously unseen birds, some rather bold squirrels, too. I go here to enjoy a quiet evening and to ponder Philadelphia's history through its deceased inhabitants. Thinking about the meaning of it all goes really well in this place. I like this place a lot. I wish I could work there. The management of the cemetery takes a rather unorthodox approach to marketing. They refuse to have a web presence. They don't want a website or social media, even when it is offered to them for free. I wonder if that will spell doom for this place sooner that it deserves.

West Laurel Hill is one of those places. This cemetery should not be confused with the more prominent Laurel Hill Cemetery, located across the Schuykill river. When you come upon. West Laurel Hill, it looks like it's a modest cemetery. As you explore, it seems to unfold, more and more and more. This is true no matter which entrance you use. One of the most historical graves is also a monument to the 57 Irish Immigrants who perished at Duffy's Cut. They were all hired in unscrupulous ways to build railroad tracks. They were murdered and buried in a mass grave near Malvern...almost forgotten, until their remains were found. Some of the remains were moved to West Laurel Hill where they rest with a monument to all. Every year there is a ceremony remembering these unfortunate souls. This was why Lion and I first visited, to participate in this cemetery. Since it was a beautiful spring day, we decided to walk some of the paths, where we quickly realized just how much there was. We'll surely return again and again to this beautiful, serene place to visit. Highly recommend.

We have a family history with DuBois Funeral Home so when my mother died we chose to go with…read moreDuBois. The morning my mom died, we met as a family and took a call from the funeral director. In our first conversation, he made a comment about being tired because he had to get up early to pick up my mother's body and "had to be up all night". A couple of days after my mom died, my dad made a comment about not knowing when he would get her ring. As he had quite a bit on his plate, I told him I would call the funeral home on his behalf to inquire about her ring. I called and reached the funeral director. When I asked about her wedding band, his first response was to say she wasn't wearing one. I explained that she was. My mom had bad arthritis and her ring couldn't be removed due to her swollen knuckle, so there was no question that she was wearing her ring. The funeral director again told me that the ring must have been left at the hospital. I reiterated that her ring was on her finger as it could not be removed. At this point, the funeral director informed me that her ring was cremated and with her ashes. I was upset to hear this, but I told myself that there was nothing that could be done and prepared to exit the call. As I was about to exit the call, Mr. Dubois asked me "Why didn't you tell me you wanted the ring?" I stopped Mr. Dubois and asked him to please not put the missing ring on my family. In response, Mr. Dubois stated that he hoped someday I could understand how difficult his job was. I was so taken aback by his response that I repeated what he said incredulously, to which he replied that I was obviously an "angry woman". I was again shocked that this was his response. When I stated that I was upset that my mom's ring was gone, Mr. Dubois responded that I was lying and that my mother's ring wasn't gone, it was with her ashes. After this back-and-forth, I asked him to please stop as I was grieving and upset that I couldn't give my dad his wife's ring. Mr. Dubois told me I had an anger problem, and that I "wouldn't accept his apology", before hanging up on me. Saying "you won't accept my apology" isn't an apology. As the ring was gone and we were in the middle of planning her memorial, I did my best to move forward. On the day of the memorial service, my family and I set up memorial tables with mementos of my mom's life. Once the service started, we were very busy greeting visitors and weren't paying attention to the memorial tables. After the service, we realized that the funeral home staff had covered the tables with programs and the sign-in book - right on top of the mementos we had laid out. They didn't ask us if they could do this or request we move anything--they just put them right on top. My mom's ring and a smooth service couldn't bring her back, but not having her ring, in particular, is a loss we feel. No one is perfect and mistakes are understandable. Mr. Dubois' response was not.

Gardner is the usual funeral home used by many of my family, friends and neighbors. I think it's because of the location. To me, it can't be much else. This is your "typical" yuck factor funeral home in my opinion. Ugly, outdated, wallpaper and a funky stench, with just a touch of creepy & coldness in the air. I took a mint after our first "stop" and it was actually a soft, nasty/stale candy instead. I spit it in the trash. The one employee didn't know where my friend, the DAUGHTER of the deceased, was and looked at me clueless. Not good AT ALL. It's nice that they have tissue boxes a-plenty and I believe, small water bottles as well. The only decor, if you will, that I liked, was the cage of cute finches.
