We have gone here a few times so far with at least two of our cats (we have 8 of them so sometimes details are hard to recall). We first tried calling vets in our own area but they either weren't taking new pets or were scheduling months in advance. So we drive farther to get to Lakeside, but we are satisfied with them. The appointments haven't been too far in the future and we have liked the people we have spoken to so far. They are observing pandemic protocols, which are fine with me. You wait outside and let them know you are there, and someone comes out to talk to you and get your critter. Then an assistant or even the doctor comes out to talk to you. We needed a prescription for insulin for our Sunny Jim, and it was easy to arrange through Chewy.com. I can edit this review at a later date if I need to add details about the quality and cost of care over a longer term, but we are satisfied now and don't expect to be disappointed later. At this point I wouldn't even switch to one of the local vets if they got less busy. read more

Shortly after I adopted my kitten, he became very ill.. I did not have time to establish a new vet yet but reached out to Lakeside Vet in hopes they could help. They heard the horror story from another experience I had with another place that was supposed to be considered a "hospital" and by the kindness in their hearts got my kitten into their clinc the very next day. Every other avenue I had attempted before contacting them, either led to them not accepting new patients or that they were booked until June. Dr. Samantha was such a breath of fresh air. She was extremely professional, informative and was very thorough with her exam of Ashton. I left the exam with more knowledge and confidence that everything was going to be okay. After 4 days of an absolute nightmare situation, I cannot express how thankful and grateful I am for the entire staff here. Thank you for reminding me there still is kindness and compassion in this industry! I will not go anywhere else or recommend any other vet to any of my family or friends. read more

I was visiting family in Maine last weekend and had a terrifying medical emergency with our cocker spaniel. We jumped in the car and my sister-in-law called Lakeside from the road, they said they would see us when we got there. On arrival we had about a 2 minute wait before they got us in an exam room. While we were doing this the office staff were contacting our vet in Rhode Island for medical records. We saw Dr. Paine whom I found to be extremely professional and caring. She examined our dog and spent a lengthy amount of time getting a history from us and diagnosing the possible issue. Dr. Paine then gave us signs of what to watch for and possible causes; she did a great job keeping us calm and delivering useful information to a couple of rattled parents. I found the office and medical staff at Lakeside to be extremely professional and caring. I've owned dogs and cats for 25 years and been to many animal hospitals, I would highly recommend Lakeside and would not hesitate to go back. Thank you! read more

Call veterinarian about my golden retriever answer the phone Told them situation of my dogs needed to be put down we took the dog on vacation knowing this could happen but he was not ready to be put down yet at home. After being up here for 6 days he took a bad turn and now time has come. His Quality of life has past in the last two days. He has a tumor on his spleen we had him for 12 years also the longest of the many I have had in my life. Trying to post this review again since Yelp is oddly not recommending the majority of the reviews here. Nice. I show & breed Chihuahuas and travel an hour & a half to Lakeside for certain procedures due to the fact they are more familiar with Chihuahuas than any of our local vets. I have also & will continue to recommend them to puppy owners or other small dog owners because of their experience & how well we (and our pups of course!) have been treated at their clinic. I only wish we lived closer--but it is still well worth the drive!! read more

They are always on time and they are wonderful with my dog. They are very caring and compassionate... They always get my dog in as soon as possible for any emergency. Highly recommended. read more

Dr. Sabean saved my dog's life. I had been living out of state with my 5 year old Miniature Dachshund, and she got mysteriously sick. She was having seizures and a high fever, crying all the time. I thought she was dying. My vet there thought it was a tick borne illness, so we tested for Lyme, for Erlichiosis, for RMSF, everything they could think of. When all the tests came back negative, I was assured that sometimes there are false negatives and we should treat anyway... We started heavy doxycycline and pain meds to bring her fever down. No improvement. She wouldn't eat, she lost weight and huddled in her kennel all the time miserably. She lost bladder control. We travelled home for a holiday (which was extremely stressful with a sick dog!) and my mother's vet, Dr. Sabean at Lakeside, immediately suggested we do an ANA test to check for autoimmune issues. It was positive, and my dachshund was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus - which has an abysmal survival rate in dogs. Fortunately her progression was unusual, which was why it was so hard to diagnose, but it made it much more treatable. We started steroids and within days the seizures and fever were gone. It has been six years now. My dog is a healthy and active senior. She takes a small maintenance dose of prednisone to control her autoimmune symptoms. I have no doubt at all that if I'd followed the other veterinarian's advice and kept treating her aggressively for tick borne disease, that my dog would be dead. I love the folks at Lakeside vet. I bring my new puppy there now, even though it's a 45 minute drive and I could easily find someone closer. Even if none of the above had happened, they're always clean, friendly, and affordable. This is THE WORST Veterinarian office I have EVER used. I am new to the state of Maine. I am also a breeder of highly prized Italian Mastiffs and needed to bring my dog into this clinic for a simple progesterone test which checks the levels for my female mastiff who was in season. After I was assured by the staff that this was a task they were not only experienced with, but would be able to accomplish, I decided to go ahead and schedule the appointment. This progesterone test consists of drawing the canine's blood and sending the sample off to their lab then calling to get the results. Sounds pretty simple huh..?? So it is not like you need a "specialty" clinic or extensive experience to do this as it is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.. My dog is well trained and patiently sat through numerous blood draws which I conducted myself in the days leading up to my appointment. I have a progesterone home test kit which lets me know when to bring the dog into the Vet for a formal blood test but so as to stress to you the importance, time is of the essence as there is a slight window in which you can inseminate the Dam of the litter. Once I get the "numbers" back from the formal blood draw I would then embark on a journey 2 sates away where my specialty import Championship semen has been stored and frozen for the big day. SO on Friday we get to the clinic and everything went fine, a little ditsy were the receptionist / technicians, no big deal, and I loaded momma onto the table and held her head while these strangers drew her sample.. I was assured the blood sample would be dropped into the Fed Ex box on her way home and we would get the results early the next morning from the lab enabling us plenty of time to travel to my Vet in waiting. My Vet 2 states away was on call, awaiting the results of the progesterone levels and would call us in if the numbers were optimal. The next day I did NOT receive a call from the Lakeside Veterinarian Clinic as I was promised.. so my husband took the liberty to call them himself around 11am for the results which were not in at that time. The tech he spoke with said that she would call the lab herself and get the numbers which we were trying so hard to patiently wait for.. the hours passed and there was still no call. Repeated calls to the clinic were met by assurance the results would be in any minute. By the days end the Technician had not only NEVER called, but now the clinic was CLOSED until Monday..!! Needless to say we were on edge about the entire situation, this breeding had been planned for 8 months, there are buyers with deposits on hold for this litter, and on Monday December 23rd, the Lakeside Veterinarian Clinic calls us to apologize and not only admitted to messing up, but also assured my husband that the $100 for the test would be REFUNDED to us in cash because of it.. another phone call was initiated soon after with a correction in which they were quote "not allowed" to give cash refunds, but would be issuing a $100 credit towards our account instead which we were satisfied with, but none the less the blood test results were not retrieved for us until Tuesday, which indicated that her levels were nearing the END of her cycle and so we had to RUSH her that day to the Vet 2 states away who was specialized in doing my transcervical insemination, and that was was on Christmas eve..!! My poor daughter was caught up in this mess because she was visiting us from Seattle, and so instead of sitting around the tree we were all crammed into the car for a 4 hour trip. Somehow by the grace of God the $3500 worth of Championship semen from Croatia took and 9 weeks later we had 9 beautiful puppies and thank goodness for that because this Lakeside Veterinarian Clinic would NOT have been satisfied with the results of a lawsuit totaling over $30,000 worth of specialty bred Italian Import puppies.. Well my husband recently called to schedule an appointment for a check up for one of our puppies flying to Texas.. he asks about the credit on the account and she says there is nothing noted.. but she would speak to the clinic manager / Veterinarian and get back to us.. and guess what..?? YUP.. you guessed it, we have heard NOTHING from Lakeside Veterinarian Clinic to this day (2 weeks later).. so here I am.. again disappointed in their lack of common courtesy and professionalism for their clients. It is just a hundred dollars, believe me I could care less about the money, but it is simply the principal of the entire situation, It is a shame when a business highly operated on TRUST takes it upon themselves to blatantly treat people so cold and inhumanely I would NEVER trust Lakeside Veterinarian Clinic with my dogs or puppies EVER. So in my opinion people, PROCEED with CAUTION, and be sure to watch your wallet. read more

I have been bringing my 13 year old black lab to Lakeside for 8 years and we are now driving from Saco so she can continue to be seen by the people who know her best. Know this: I TRUST DR. SABEAN AND HER TEAM IMPLICITLY. I am grateful beyond words for their compassion, responsiveness, and commitment to their patients. They take our concerns seriously, take the time to explain and offer reassurance when I am panicked about something (usually after I have read something awful on the internet even though I know better), and have always made it a priority to see our pets the same day or very next morning when there is an issue that needs attention. Dr. Sabean and her staff have seen us through 2 major surgeries, a tooth extraction after our dog cracked a tooth on an indestructible toy she proved wrong, managing arthritis that is slowly spreading, one very embarrassing episode of mange several years ago caught from another dog, at least one sprained paw, and a few random infections here and there from licking places dog sometimes like to lick for reasons we humans will never understand. The quality of treatment and services provided to our dog has been exceptional every step of the way. With our dog's first surgery, Dr. Sabean and the other staff provided a tremendous amount of support and checked in with us by phone at least once or twice a day for the first few days between the time Josie returned home and was seen for her follow up appointment. Over the least 2 years, they have been providing medication management and treatment for age-related arthritis which has allowed our dog to continue to do the things she loves to do without pain and with very few limitations. Our dog's second surgery was a very big and scary deal for us. I originally brought her in to have increased leg weakness/lameness and limping checked out. Typically, it's either been a strained/pulled muscle from playing too hard or a need to increase her medication to manage the aches from the arthritis. They had me drop her off the day after I called so the doctor could look at her between appointments/surgeries rather than wait 3-4 days for an available appointment. I received a call from Dr. Sabean a few hours after dropping her off. Josie had a large mass on her spleen. Splenetic tumors generally have a very poor prognosis and we discussed all our options. She was kind, compassionate, gentle, and most importantly, realistic about possible outcomes for each option. Further testing revealed no visible spread, which meant Dr. Sabean could move forward with surgery. Dr. Sabean and her staff - Lauren, specifically - went above and beyond what I could have ever expected in making themselves available and supporting me during the worst part of her recovery because my husband was out of state for work at the time and I was alone in caring for her. It was scary, but they made sure I never felt alone. And, against all odds, the tumor ended up being benign. Most recently, they have seen us through laying our rescue cat who was FeLV+ to rest. Her initial decline happened rapidly and unexpectedly. This was the first time both my husband and I have had to make this type of decision and it's still too fresh for me talk about, but what's important to know is that we received tremendous support from the team at Lakeside. When our cat started to show some signs she was about to decline again after a hopeful, brief period of treatment and recovery, we called the clinic late that afternoon to see how soon we could get her in. Dr. Sabean came in early the next morning so our cat wouldn't have to wait any longer than necessary to be seen. So, maybe we didn't have $30k of breeding money to be made when our pets have gone in to Lakeside, but we have had our pets lives on the line and in their hands. Maybe if you're looking to make money off your pets, this isn't the right place for you, I don't know. But if you consider your pets family and want to be treated as such, then this is unquestionably the place I would recommend read more

I have been going Dr. Sabean way before she built Lakeside and she is the most compassionate and kind person ever. She's a great surgeon as she had to repair two of my dogs legs and after they healed, no one would ever know they had had a problem. I feel the warmth and love from the staff and have gotten to know them really well. I know when my dogs are there they will have the very best of care. Fact is, I told my friends if anything happened to me and I couldn't get into Inland Hospital to take me to Dr. Sabean and I know she would truly care and do what's best for me. She has another doctor there part-time and he's a semi-retired veterinarian who is just as wonderful as Dr. Sabean is. I wouldn't want to take my animals anywhere else. read more

First off, the one review that was posted on 2014 is pretty aggressive... Our dog, pepper has been involved with agility training for about a year and has responded quite well with this sport! Through his training I noticed his paw was bleeding a small amount. After a couple of vet appointments (Lakeside is not our normal vet clinic) we're told pepper has a tumor and there are cancer cells. Unfortunately, our regular vet did not have immediate availability to do this surgery to remove the tumor. Thankfully and luckily our dog trainer, Diane Wheeler made arrangements for us to see Dr. Sabean at Lakeside veterinary clinic. Within four days, pepper had surgery and still is recovering as I post this review. We are extremely thankful that Lakeside vet clinic was passionate, kind, positive, and their professionalism is exemplary! Of course, my dog trainer recommended me to give them a call and with her expertise and years of experience I knew it would be a win -win! :-) We're not out of the woods yet, but what this medical staff we're giving the best shot and I thank all of you! Boy, the posted 1 star review prompted me to add my own to the mix! While I am appalled if what Heather P. posted is completely accurate, my own experience has been nothing but positive! I have been with Lakesides' Dr. Sabean for several years now since my lifelong vet unexpectedly and suddenly passed away. I have total trust in Dr. Sabean and her staff, especially Lauren who previously worked for my previous vets office. They have saved the life of my own kitty who had a urinary obstruction and required radical surgery. I've always had prompt, clear, and complete responses to my questions and/or concerns, however, I'm sure they've messed up before since they're human too. When a breeder writes that is "new" to the state of Maine and a "specialized" breeder, I tend to envision an uppity, Massachusetts bred, wealthy and spoiled individual. Doesn't mean I'm right, but I can just imagine that this persons expectation might not have factored in the possibility of human error or lab problems that are out of the hands of the vet. If everything occurred as described by this person, then I must agree wholeheartedly that Lakeside not only owes an apology, but for their own business reputaions sake, make this customer happy. In this case I wonder if that is even possible at this point anyway. I've been a breeder of papered Persians and I understand the challenges of breeders. If I had $30,000.00 on the line, however, I think I would have traveled the "two states" and had THAT vet do the tests.....or stayed in that state until the "job" was done. I love this vet and my only complaint is typical as they don't have 24hr emergency coverage. Otherwise, they exceed my expectations on a regular basis with a household of two Himalayans and a Pekingnese. read more
