This place was amazing! Queenstown was completely packed so I had to expand my search to the nearby areas, and wound up being for 2 nights at LEL. Best mistake I made in my trip to NZ. Felt much more like a B&B with a dorm room or a homestay than the normal hostel feel. Kimmy and John were the nicest people and super accommodating to all requests. They really do just want this to feel like home for a few days where you can relax and enjoy nature away from a lot of the craziness of Queenstown.
I took advantage of the hiking and kayaking, but they also have tennis and golf and a host of other activites. Hot tub and sauna! If you are planning to go to QT, the drive there is gorgeous (what isn't in this country?), and you can either do the backpackers thing and hitchhike or catch a ride with one of the friendly other guests who will inevitably be headed that direction. At the end of the day join the family dinner for a few bucks and enjoy recounting the day with the other guests.
The dorm room (built by John himself) was very well done, shelves, power points, and lighting in each bunk and cubbies to store backpacks. The bathrooms are normal bathrooms (this is their house after all) and the living room / kitchen is as well. The other rooms look like equally great places to stay, as is Gus the Bus (I got to stay a night here and it may be my favorite location so far).
With a roaring fire and sauna I can only imagine how great this will be in the winter after a day at the Remarkables skiing.
TL:DR - I couldn't recommend this highly enough. Book an extra few days because once you come you won't want to leave. read more
