Even more of a throwback was to see actual lifeguards on duty. There was even a snow cone vendor nearby. For a second I thought I was imagining myself in an 80s flick and waited for John Cusack to float by me on an inner tube... must have been the triple digit heat that day. Anyway, Chico continues to throw a surprise at me every time I visit and explore around. One Mile is a gem and I'm grateful to my friend for introducing it to me. The a holes in spot 132 decided to party until 4 o'clock in the morning and keep everybody up. Thanks for that. Lots of clean bathrooms, and a central shower area in the first loop provides reasonably priced showers with both hot and cold water. Apparently, there are no evening patrols in this particular campground. No enforcement of the reasonable time to be quiet. When we informed the people at the gate on the way out, they just looked at us blankly. I guess we'll have to contact the district office. Cell phone reception was mixed. People with AT&T did not seem to have good cell phone reception in most places. I have T-Mobile and got two bars in most places. My friend who had Verizon had full service and 5G If you get a chance, go to the waffle shop in town. That's literally the name of the restaurant. See Rachel at the counter for excellent service. Also in the area not to be missed is Jake's burgers.

We had lunch and enjoyed the great weather and beautiful views. People were walking, biking and even roller skating over the dam. There is lots of educational information on the dam to read. The area is locked between 11pm and 5 am but otherwise open to the public and free for everyone to enjoy.

And glad I did!…read more I took a walk along the walkway with a stunning view of the lake on one side and a breathtaking view of the town on the other. People walk, like I did, jog, walk their dogs, or just take a nice stroll through here. I went on a beautifully sunny day and was amazed by the sight and atmosphere of the area. Would gladly come by and take another walk in the future, because I wasn't able to explore the whole area.

I just have to say this is one of the most hospitable, easy to visit forests in the country. The Almanor Ranger District encompasses the southern end of Lassen National Forest. We found our stop at this station well worth it. The staff was helpful and answered our questions about road and trail conditions in Caribou Wilderness. They have maps, brochures and other useful information available for free. There are also books and assorted items for sale. Public restrooms are located inside the building.

I didn't think we will be driving this far... So Nevada City is in fact in California. Located in Nevada County, 60 miles northeast of Sacramento. It looks and feels like a small town with cute shops and restaurants. Quaint and slightly more expensive or on par with some of its surrounding areas (E.g. Lake Tahoe). This area is very outdoorsy with hiking and kayaking being top draws in the summer. The Nevada Theatre is one of the oldest existing theater building in this county. Lots of other museums and culture to explore. During Christmas, this little town celebrates with Victorian-era flair with holiday themed lights and lots of holiday food. During the rest of the year, they have film festivals, summer nights street festivals, etc.

Oh well. There was a small sign about the tree. There were 2 public unisex bathrooms next to the tree available to use too. It is next to the Calif State Park Northern Buttes District Headquarters open to the public M-F 9-3, and you can get maps and some information there. I think it's worth a stop if you're in Oroville.

All right...I love history. California registered historical landmark #1043 resides right in…read moreOroville. It is located in front of a State Parks building. The entire landmark and experience can be soaked in fairly quickly, less than 10 minutes. Plus it is not far from the Gold County Casino. This landmark is for the oldest living orange tree in California. Way back in 1856, someone thought to buy a 2-3 year old seeding off the streets of Sacramento via Mazatlan Mexico and lugged it to Oroville. The story goes that Judge Joseph Lewis planted it on Bidwell Bar (gold mining site) near the toll bridge in 1856. From there it flourished and many folks, including the local miners, enjoyed the oranges and took seeds away with them. So who knows how many other orange trees came to be from this one! Lots I reckon. The orange tree was moved in 1964 due to the Oroville dam construction. To this day it flourishes and bears oranges. How great is that?!? Take note the tree is fenced off and can be admired from a distance. There is an information board and a historical marker. Soak it in folks.

This is a very cute museum that concentrates on this history of Chico. We started with a tribute to…read morethe Chinese history in Chico. They had a temple in the first room. The other room featured educational history, medical history, fire and police history along with appropriate displays for each era. The neatest part was a video that showed historic landmarks and how the city has grown over the years. Photos are allowed but no flash, and it is FREE admission with donations accepted. You will not need and entire day but it is worth a visit and you will walk out more educated about the City of Chico.
