I have heard of attitudes from employees on Lake Champlain Ferries and experienced it myself this weekend, just a nasty woman who hates her work and life selling boarding passes in Plattsburgh. Open Plattsburgh and Burlington with a bridge please. Charge a toll until paid and build a bridge. It would cut the travel time more than 50% and no attitudes. read more

There are three ferry crossing points on Lake Champlain -- all of which are operated by the Lake Champlain Transportation Co. and cross the lake at various points on the lake -- with the trip taking between 12 minutes and 1 hour, depending on where you are crossing at. Although I have only used one crossing point so far -- the 1 hour Port Kent, NY to Burlington, Vt. (and vice versa) -- this is a ride not to be missed if you are in the area -- I can't say enough abou this ferry ride and therefore I will not try, but suffice it to say, if you like water and mountains, this is an experience not to be missed. I like to take this ride when I am in the area -- generally on my way to Montreal, as it breaks up the trip nicely. The sites you see during the crossing are breathtaking no matter what time of year you do cross -- keep in mind this particular crossing point only runs between May and October, whereas the other two points cross the lake year round. If you are taking the ferry to Burlington (with or without your car), there are plenty of places by the dock to sit and enjoy a beer or dinner while gazing at the mountains and the lake. It is also an easy walk into the downtown district to do some shopping and check out the local artists. There is less to do on the Port Kent side of the lake -- especially if you are crossing without a car -- but it does make for a nice round-trip excursion. Oh, the sunsets cannot be beat from the Burlington side -- the best place to catch the sunset is in Burlington's Waterfront Park. That alone is worth the trip over. Checkout their schedule online -- they have ferries running all day long. The prices, even for your car, are reasonable, and if you have kids along, they will love the breeze in their hair and the sites to be seen. Enjoy! read more

It's a definite must if visiting Burlington, VT, to spend a few hours on Lake Champlain and enjoying the spectacular views on a beautiful sunny day. I suggest you pack some food /snacks and drinks as the vending machine doesn't offer much. You can't beat the price at $8 a person one way, $16 round trip. There's not much to do in the other side(port Kent) so we stayed on the ferry and didn't get off for the return trip home. There's also a great coffee/chocolate store called "Nu Chocolate" that serves Nespresso coffee and has wonderful chocolates when you get off. If you're looking for a lunch/dinner place , "Shanty on the Shore" is reasonable and has an outside terrace with great lake views and is steps away from the ferry. read more

I am very fond of the Lake Champlain Ferry system. I have taken it many times, in Burlington, as well as south on the lake, from Fort Ticonderoga over to Shoreham, VT. Inexpensive and super scenic, it is a fun and relaxing way to cross the lake. Never crowded, this queer boat leaks local flavor. read more

Too expensive ! The whole trip to and from costed us over $70 bucks. I'm not sure it was worth it, but tontry it one time to know, it wasnt bad I guess. For those who really need to cross the lake to cut down the driving, it way worth it. They have quick food and restroom in the facility as well. The ride was about an hour long, even though it's not that far. Also before you go, check their schedule or else you'd be like us, waiting for an hour for the next trip because we were 5 minutes late. they dont have the ferrie running at all time. read more

I love how I complain about paying $4.15 to take I-87 from Beacon to Albany, but $38 for a ferry ride? What a bargain! Ha! :-D In all seriousness, I've wanted to try this ferry ride for a while. I've been to the Burlington area to visit family a few times in the past few years, but we never have any reason to take the ferry across the lake. While on vacation near Lake George, I took a day trip up to Burlington and decided I wanted to take a fun route back to New York State. The ferry it was! I can only speak for my experience for the 4:10 p.m. ferry ride on a Monday afternoon mid-August, but I arrived to get my tickets around 3:30, expecting a longer line. By the time we loaded, perhaps seven cars were on the boat, total. (I'm overly prepared, I suppose!) The cost to bring on my car was $30, plus an extra $8 for both me and my passenger. I thought we'd leave at 4:10, but that's when we boarded. Still, I looked at my watch when we first set sail, and it was 4:16. They load you in fast! The ride across Lake Champlain is nothing sort of magical. You spend about an hour on the water, drawn to the views around you. I am a water person, so I was in my element. It was such a peaceful and memorable ride. I almost wish it was a longer trip! I felt a bit sad when we reached the shores of Fort Kent, NY! One thing I loved about the boat was its antiquatedness. I know that may seem odd to say, haha, but I mean it. This isn't a boat with luxury passenger seating, WiFi, or other crazy amenities. There is a no-frills snack bar on the top where passengers can get chips, soda, popcorn, and wine. There are old benches on the inside, basic benches on the outside, and even a large binocular stand to take in the views of the lake. I certainly don't need any amenities; it's nice to disconnect and enjoy the experience. Also, of note, if you are heading across the lake and are heading back down to the Lake George area, it's about 90 minutes from port to Exit 21 off of I-87. That's really not to shabby, seeing as it took me longer to drive up! (Closer to 3 hours!) If you have the time to kill and want a unique experience to view the lake and the surrounding mountains, take the ferry. I think it's worth every penny. read more

The ferry experience is MUCH less stressful without a car. My favorite trip during the summer is to take the Burlington-Port Kent ferry, then walk uphill to the Amtrak platform and enjoy the view of Lake Champlain while waiting to catch the Adirondack train to Montreal for a night on the town. You can come back on a Vermont Transit bus, or take the Adirondack-plus-ferry combo in the morning. read more

Oh, how the times have changed. As a kid, I LOVED taking the ferry from Burlington, VT to Port Kent, NY to visit my grandparents. The Burlington side has the Breakwater Cafe and a gift shop, where I would score mountains of useless souvenirs of a place I went literally several times a year. The ferries had gift shops, too, and snack bars and each was unique: Valcour was all below deck, Adirondack had a snack bar and gift shop above the parking level, and the Champlain, which was the one we never wanted to go on because it just had a little snack bar and a few things for sale, rounded out the trio. The Port Kent side had a big gift shop, restaurant on the water, and I would save (or steal) change from my family members and walk down to the water to buy maple candy. There was a whole summer where I put maple butter on literally everything. Cut to present day: after a several-year closure following flooding and ice damage, the ferry is open again but service is less frequent than every hour. The Adirondack appears to be decommissioned and only the Valcour and Champlain make the rounds. I took the Champlain this time and had the following snack options: Reese's peanut butter cups, Kit Kat, Doritos, or a hot dog. Barefoot mini bottles were available for $8 + tax (just couldn't do it when I can get an entire bottle for $9...). Oh and it's $30 one way driver only. Ouch! The Burlington side still seems to be booming but the PK side's glory days have clearly passed - the gift shop and restaurant are closed. Only one little ticket hut is operational as a means to get back to the other side. No more maple candy, no more maple butter. It seems like Champlain Ferries is trying to kill off this route -- it costs double the gas to drive around, the "amenities" (for lack of a better word) have all but evaporated, and the schedule makes it challenging to schedule a trip up. The ferry is kind of a fun "see the lake and the mountains" excursion, but not so reliable if you're on a schedule. I misread the schedule (all me) and ending up cutting it pretty close between when we were getting off the ferry and onto the train. If the train wasn't delayed, we'd have been stranded in Port Kent, NY for a couple of hours as the ferry departed 15 minutes late. It's my understanding that the primary reason for the Amtrak Port Kent line (open seasonally to coincide with the ferry) is to serve those coming off of the ferry as the train stop is a platform with no services or parking lot. As such, I would vouch for some communication between the ferry and Amtrak so the ferry-riders aren't balls of stress and hence unable to enjoy the oh-so-scenic views I can't complain too much (and I know I just did) since the ferry is only $5 per person (without a car), easy, and scenic. read more

I drove from Albany to Burlington and decided to the the ferry over to NY on my return. Just an hour cruise and so enjoyable. 30 bucks you and your car arrive. There are two types af vessels, be sure you find out which ones have a viewing deck and such. If not it is just a large flat one. When you get off there is the Ausable Chasm just 5 mins away. We were heading to a brewery in VT from upstate NY. As we were driving we realized we had to go on the ferry. Luckily the ferry was just pulling in when we got there. It cost myself and my small suv $10.25, and $4.25 for the other passenger (one way). They do not take credit card, cash only. However, there was an atm there too. This is a very small ferry, no option to get food or an alcoholic drink. The ride is not long. The ferry does hold more than you would think, as we were dreading we wouldn't be able to make it on but we did! The person to get your ticket from was not the friendliest, but the ferry does it's job with a nice view of Lake Champlain! read more

It was a great way to shoot across Lake Champlain without worrying about making one of the other ferry stops driving down through the stixville western lake border. A bit overpriced, but it was well worth it for the hour long cruise over to Burlington to Plattsburg. A small food counter and gift shop are aboard as well. Incredible value when heading across the lake in your car. It takes about an hour and is well worth it. The accoutrements vary depending on the car you are sitting in while you cruise from Burlington to Plattsburg or back again. For instance, mine had heated seats and AM & FM radio - boss! I really didn't want to take the ferry on my trip, but the GPS said I had to go that way. I decided to give it a try, to mark it off my bucket list. My car has been on a train, but it's never been on a ferry until now. I am so glad now that I went that way. once my car was on the ferry, I got out to take a look. This was the kids first ferry experience and it was a great one. The scenery is fantastic. Takes about 40 minutes to cross. Everything appears to be safe. Small snack bar and gift shop below the car deck. Hold onto your kids because there are plenty of places and ways for them to wander off the ferry into the lake. And, you need to watch your schedule closely. This ferry (of 3 that leave from NY) is not 24 hours and last one leaves around 5:30PM. read more
