Every time I am on a "tropical" (aka humid) vacation I have to get my hair braided. Like if I don't get my hair braided into two extremely tight and waxed down cornrows then I will be a very unhappy camper with my frizzy, thick, long hair creating problems for me and everyone else around me. So it's much easier to just take care of it by tying it all down. My boyfriend spotted a little stand that looked like it might be a henna and braid stand, and it was Lahaina Henna! There was only one lady working and there were a couple waiting for henna, but the lady working was polite and showed me an album with some hair options and told me that it would be about a 30 minute wait. So of course I waited. I was impressed with the lady's ability to stay calm while drawing the henna artwork and having new customers constantly coming up to request prices, wait times, etc. Her personality and service skills make this a 4-star review rather than a 3-star review. The lady got to braiding my hair. She was more than happy to attempt the super tight cornrows, but she did have to untie them and restart a couple of times. I get it... my hair is long. And thick. And I always request the braids to be as tight as possible. It's a bit intimidating for people, but she handled it and my braids were cute. They stayed flat for a little more than 24 hours, but then started to get little frizzy hairs coming out. Perhaps more bees wax next time. The price was right however at $40. (I tipped her $40 as well!)
We are staying at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel Right next to Whalers Village shopping center. The henna artist at WV is ridiculously overpriced. This little kiosk on front street gave us exactly what we were looking for and in a friendly manner. The dye is vegetable based and shows black on the skin, not the red of traditional henna. Rays, the artist, did both of my girls and we spent about 90 minutes getting them done (30 min wait time and then 30 per girl). They also do hair braiding and have pre-made wraps available. We spent 80 dollars for two full hands. Prices start as low as $15 for a small design and go up from there. Right next to the guy with the parrots and on the sidewalk near the Dirt shirt store. Rays made a mistake on my smaller daughters hand and had the main point going towards her ring finger instead of her middle one. That being said, it turned out beautifully. With my older daughter, she altered the turtles in the design to be even prettier than the picture she'd chosen. My only recommendation: be careful how you sleep on the first night. My daughter slept with her face on her hand and ended up with a beautiful shadow design on her cheek that won't wash off. ;)
Tourists here! Taking the morning to walk around Lahaina and of course my 3 girls spot this little henna and hair braiding shot. Lisa, the artist and possible owner of this sweet spot was helpful, knowledgeable and efficient to us newbies to the henna world. Books upon books of designs and options for custom art as well. Lisa is killing the game and we are sad she doesn't live closer to us. My girls are happy and as a father spending tons of money in Maui... I am happy. Grab some coffee, get lei'd and get some henna. You will be sad you did!
Had two cornrows braids and henna tattoo done by Lucie, absolutely love it! It was quick and fun, something unique you should definitely experience during your vacation! Recommend 100%%%!
Rebecca with Lahaina Henna is amazing! Love my henna tattoo! Thank you for your amazing customer service!
Who just got the cutest humpback whale henna tattoo on her forearm??? I did!!! Every time I visit Maui, I treat myself to a Hawaiian- themed henna tattoo. This year was no exception! I met the adorable Tomo, who showed me many whale images to choose from. Her artistry was delicate and precise. I look forward to seeing the image "mature" and reveal itself as the days pass! Thank you Tomo!!!
My son and I got Jagua tattoos during our visit to Lahaina in July 2022. The artist was very patient, as we debated our designs for a few minutes. She worked well with our 7 y/o son and gave very specific instructions on Jagua tattoo care at the end. We loved the artwork which made great accessories during our Hawaiian trip. Definitely recommend!
My daughter completely loves Lahaina Henna. The customer service was great. My daughter got a hair band braid which included her choice of braid that is attached to her hair and a braided section with beads on the end. I observed some Henna being done upon our arrival and it looked good. There are several options to choose from. We would return again.
We stopped here on our walk down front street. Michele who did my sons henna tattoo was great. She was very covid conscious.. asking us to hand sanitizer before we looked at books and then wore a mask and sanitized before she worked on the tattoo. It came out amazing!
I came in pretty close to closing tonight but they still took me, even though what I wanted was really complex and detailed. Diane really took her time to make sure it was perfect & I was happy with it. I was really surprised how good it came out in such a short amount of time. She was very friendly & I really enjoyed the experience. I'm happy I chose this henna shop rather than others, and I'm even happier that I came when Diane was working. If you're looking for a dragon henna, check out Diane! You won't regret it.
*Long review* An absolute blessing in coming here. My mom and I went on vacation and we haven't had henna done on us in so long. We looked at reviews and pictures and decided to check this place out. We met the sweet and wonderful Rya, and she had binders of different designs to pick from. Since it was getting late, my mom was able to get a couple on her and I got one of my hands. We loved Rya so much that we came back another night and got the rest of what we wanted. We showed her the designs we wanted and she specialized them that meant something meaningful to us. We truly love how we all connected and received the hennas how they are meant to be received, as blessings. On our last day of our trip, she touched up our hennas and tweaked them again and was even better! I asked her for my right hand (shown on left in pic) to be more of water since I felt such a strong connection with water. So she used inspiration from Lahaina Henna's design but turned more so Rya's original design. I'm so thankful we met Rya :) she's soooo amazing!! A wonderful person and incredible artist! In short, Rya is so lovely and so wonderful! She explained how hennas work, the meanings of certain types, how long they last, what makes them fade faster and what keeps them on longer. Pretty much the do's and dont's. She really pays attention to detail and takes the time with you. I absolutely recommend her! :)
I love this place! Rya did Dutch braid pigtails and also a henna arm tattoo around my arm. Both came out amazing!!! She is so talented and also very nice. I accidentally washed mine off too soon so It was too light and I came back and they touched it up for free (they ask you do a review as well.) Michelle did the re-touch and was also nice and did a great job! Thank you guys!!!
Beautiful work, clean and super nice staff. However, there was no disclosure of possible skin reaction to black/blue henna. The tattoo stain was beautiful after the initial drying and fall off of the paint. But I noticed once the stain began to disappear days later that the skin where the stain was became raised and kept the initial design. The raised skin looked interesting and initially gave no discomfort. After a few days the raise began to itch so I made an appt for skin consultation and looked up if there were any possible allergies to black henna. Several articles came up. I had no idea and I feel like such an idiot for not having done any type of prior research before having the henna placed. According to the articles, black henna has a dangerous chemical compound that is extremely toxic. Should you develop a sensitivity from black henna placement you would then become prone to allergy to hair dyes. I feel bad to give a 1 star but after reading the articles there are several advisements and disclosures that should have been given prior to treatment.

First time in Maui. While I was walking around I saw all these Henna binders full of beautiful art. Lucie then approached me & was extremely nice. I got this Henna with flowers & a turtle. Lucie was super quick yet did this BEAUTIFULLY. When I go back to Maui definitely coming here again. Henna lasted me little over 2 weeks. read more
Cleanliness 5 Cost 5 Cuisine NA Customer service 5 When in Hawaii....I've always wanted to try a henna tattoo so I decided to give this place a try. Lucy took care of me. She was very sweet, friendly and nice. She didn't pressure me for any high priced design or rush me to pick something. I found a design i liked so she did it pretty quick in like 20 min... I liked Lucy so much i had her do a 2nd one on me a few minutes later. You have to leave it on for 4 hours then wash it off completely and then the design will develop in 24 hours. I will update my review in 24 hours or so once the design develops. I definitely recommend Lucy for your Henna tattoo needs. read more

It was my last day on vacation so I stopped by with my sister to get a henna tattoo. We went on a Saturday afternoon and the wait wasn't bad, probably like 10 minutes. Maddy did an amazing job on my henna. She was able to customize the one I found in the many binders of artwork. She was very kind and did not rush the artwork even though a line grew. Mine took about 20 mins due to the intricacy of it and it turned out amazing! Highly recommend this place if you're shopping around on Front Street. read more

4 1/2 stars !! Our last night in Maui and we had been waiting all week to get a henna tattoo to take home. We walked up and were helped right away. Seda (spell check?!) was wonderful and was friendly. We chatted a bit and I saw the white board with that days specials. I selected a plumeria and my friend got a pineapple. The tattoos were drawn quickly and with detail, especially being done freehand. Only minus 1/2 star because I do think $20 before tip is a little steep for a tattoo that's about the size of a golf ball. Also the artist did mention that the specials were her best priced tattoos. I will be taking care of my tattoo to get the most from it back home! read more

I, absolutely, LOVE my henna tattoo. I wish I would have gotten the name of the artist, because she did a great job understanding what I was looking for, and drawing on with Henna, in a very short period of time! I wish I was brave enough to get a permanent tattoo, just like the one she gave me! I am a solid week in, and it still looks great!! Thank You!! read more

Absolutely amazing henna work on my hand by Michelle! I came here with my sister because we both wanted to get henna tattoos before we had to leave Maui. There was a short wait, but that gave us time to look at all the binders of beautiful designs that they have. After deciding on my design, it took just about 10-15 minutes for Michelle to complete it and just about 20 minutes for it to dry. Pretty reasonable prices for the designs - this design was $45 and turned out great. Definitely check this place out if you're around the area! read more

Don't waste your 35 dollars here. Mediocre 3rd grade art henna that rubs off onto different parts of your body. They didn't even put the power on to protect it from smear. Zero stars if it were an option. read more

This was a cute little place to get a henna! The staff was very friendly and very efficient. My drawbacks would be that the henna is already noticeably fading after only three days and, to be honest, it wasn't the absolute best artwork I've had done on me. But I would come back to get something new and see how that works out, because they were really nice people. read more

Every year when we visit Maui we come here for our henna. Michelle the manager was fantastic today. Not only did she give me this beautiful art, she juggled all the clientele and fixed everyone's smudges (for some reason it was a chain reaction of about 7 of us smearing our work). Never once did she seem annoyed or overwhelmed. Then the owner showed up, remembered us and gave us a free touch up before we leave. Even though there are plenty places to get henna here in Maui, we will always come back here! read more

Beautiful henna! The price was fair, 25$ for a henna the size of a 3inch circle. The lady doing my henna was extremely nice! The henna was beautiful, and it was done fairly quickly. It was really easy to find, and the place was cute. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants their henna done in Lahaina! read more
