This place was one of the most hopeful sights out of the all recovery effort scenes we visited. New Orleans's 9th Ward area had a great number of musicians living, and alot of them were gone, in many ways. We drove around the neighborhood that only had foundations of houses left and weed growing on top of them. Everything around there was washed away, the tour guide said. keeping the music culture is very important to people in New Orleans, and building houses for the musicians to return and start living in NOLA was the idea of this project. Houses looked questionable, but the effort should be recognized. The tour guide said 2 major good things came out of the storm. This village and pouring support from many people, and government and education system reform. The city was so rotten, it took Katrina to give the city better government and schools. They said that more than 5 officials left the office since the storm, 2 of them being the jail now. I've met a few people who said they lost everything. I was crying about my cellphone that I left on the plane coming there. I felt ashamed.

I like to take them home from my travels to my brother, also a firefighter. Lucky me, they actually already sell them so I didn't have to work any magic. The shift I met were wonderful, hospitable, and very helpful! I thought that was the end of our meeting until a couple of hours later..... Later that day- a friend and I walk into a candy shop on Canal and have a taste of a praline. Nut allergy alert!!!! To make a very long story short, I ended up having to call 911 due to struggling to breathe, enter the same shift of guys I just met at the NOFD earlier in the day, helping to save my life! The New Orleans rescue were also responsive, and at one point, I had 7 sexy rescue men in my hotel room! Am I a lucky gal, or what? (Priorities!) I just wish it didn't take a scare like this to make it happen! The fire and rescue were all very efficient, speedy, and took care of me with a shot of epinephrine, an IV started of benadryl, and a very embarrassing exit on a gurney from the Marriott on Canal. All the while, all of the helpful firefighters and rescue were positive, funny, yet keeping it professional while they tried to make my very scary evening a more positive one. How do you thank someone for helping to save your life??? Not sure, but I hope if (God forbid) something like that ever happens again, I have the NOFD (and rescue) there to help me!

The commission is made up of five members from Jefferson Parish and Five from St. Tammany. The reason for equal representation from each parish is that the bridges are equally in both parishes (The 12 mile marker is the parish line). I also appreciate the projects on the north and south shore that allow speedier travel to and from Metairie.

Anyway, I stopped in here just to see what this attraction was all about. Entry is $6 for adults and you get to watch a 30 minute film about the history of Lafitte and take a walk through the museum. There's also a nature trail behind the museum that you can check out. The film was great and actually very up to date and educational. I enjoyed it. If you watch the film, you have to wait until the end for the appearance of a special guest. It's worth the $6 admission- trust me. The museum itself is pretty neat and teaches a bit about the lifestyle and people of Barataria. The nature trail is wonderful and, if I hadn't been here on an unseasonably warm October day, I would have walked the full trail, rather than just a portion of it. Still, I enjoyed it and it was a relaxing stroll.
