The Lady Adam's Building has such an amazing history that I had to give it a "5 Star Rating". The building has survived the fire of 1852 as well as multiple flooding and is the second oldest structure in Sacramento with "Sutter Fort" being the oldest.
A group of German merchants arrived in California aboard the vessel "The Lady Adams" in 1849. Two of the merchants started their wholesale import business out of a tent and later hired men to build the store. Most of the material used to build the store (wood//bricks/mast) came from the ship itself. Thus the building became known as "The Lady Adam's" . The architect in it's design was "Julius Fielder."
Due to the constant flooding at the time, the building was raised to its current level in 1865. The upper levels of the Lady Adam's Building & the Howard Building next door were combined in 1880 as part of the expansion of the wholesale grocery firm Mebius & Company. Since then many business have occupied this building (Fogus & Coghill 1861) & (Mebius & Company 1868) (Evangeline's 1992- current tenant).
In the 1950's Old Sacramento was considered the less desirable part of town (skid-row). The Lady Adam's Building was used as an brothel & flophouse and eventually fell into despair !
In the 1970's the building was restored and is now registered as California's Historical Landmark (# 603 ).
