Even using a screwdriver to manually turn the latch wouldn't work because the latch had failed mechanically. Anyway, the locksmith showed up as scheduled. He immediately understood the problem as I explained it to him, got his tools, and quickly went to work. He had to pry the latch out in pieces as it would not retract, no matter what he did.
