We were picked up in Barnegat and loaded up luggage for the first of two stops. Within about 15 minutes we were told the air conditioning needed to be decreased for an issue. The remainder of the trip was without air conditioning. This was on a day that a heat advisory had been announced. The limo engine overheated over the course of the drive until it finally stalled just after we left the tunnel. The driver pulled us over as the steam was coming from the engine. He asked us all to get out and we quickly did so. The group needed to meet the check in time of 12-12:30pm and we were not going to make it based on the limo not being able to move. We asked what the options were given that we had contracted to be dropped off at the terminal. A point to point transfer. I personally had come dressed to impress and not expected to walk the twenty five or so minutes it took me to lug all my luggage myself. The taxi and Ubers were not an easy option because the officer who came up to find out why yelling had started explained this Labor Day weekend traffic was slowing everything down. I had to repeatedly request the back of the limo be opened so that I could actually begin my trek to the ship terminal. At the end of the day, we came to understand that this particular vehicle had known air conditioning problems before we were picked up. That it needed further work by the mechanic, yet this company chose to proceed with our ride as scheduled without alerting us of the issues and being able to make an informed decision about the risks of breaking down anywhere along our route and not meeting the ship check in deadline. I would have used public transport and taken the taxi from port authority which would have dropped me directly at my final destination as paid for. Unfortunately this company did not offer any apology for not detailing the issue, cancelling the ride up or offering an alternate company who could assure us a transport with working AC so that we avoided arriving dripping wet in our own sweat to the check in terminal. While I realize that things can and do go wrong on any part of a trip. When you know there are problems and you inform your client in a timely fashion (I.e. before onset of the trip), you can work together to come to a decision that meets both your requirements and expectations satisfactorily. Due to the lack of upfront transparency, I cannot recommend use of this company's services at this time. The driver of our car raised his voice to the ladies who asked a simple question. How will you help us to get to the ship terminal as contracted? Yes. It was repeatedly asked in a normal tone of voice. It's a reasonable question. Several of the ladies on this trip, cannot walk 20 minutes - never mind lugging suitcases, for various reasons. Hence the limo. I can say the return drive with Jeff and Will was quite nice and had this been the case on the way up. This review would not be required.

Car broke down and engine was smoking and gushing antifreeze. Driver was very rude and screamed at us. We were left on the sidewalk multiple blocks from the pier and had to walk to get to the ship on time. Don't ever use this company!!!!

I have been using some of the bigger-named services over the years but was so surprised as to how expensive they have become since the pandemic. For that reason, I had to shop around for someone cheaper, and in doing so, was faced with whether I would find the same quality service. As you may be doing right now, I poured over reviews of several Monmouth County car services companies and found that Sperling had a consistent 5-star rating from riders. I must say, I have been extremely impressed with my overall experience with Sperling from booking to the ride. So much so, that I plan to use them exclusively moving forward. Let me explain... The booking process started when I sent a personal text to its owner, Bill. I had many questions about the ride and pricing and he responded to me promptly in text replies and then referred me to booking with his wife, Linda. Linda was also a joy to deal with as she also was readily available via text when I had questions. She also made a point of keeping me updated on the pickups from my home and airport, providing me with a confirmation of the addresses and the name of the driver assigned to us. We were very fortunate to be assigned Phil as our driver, who we absolutely loved. He arrived early and was extremely professional and personable. My girlfriend and I were flying to California, and being someone familiar with the area we were visiting, Phil provided us with a wealth of information. We had some really nice conversations on our rides to and from the airport. We couldn't have asked for a better driver. Thank you, Phil, for making our ride so enjoyable. We miss you! Suffice to say, we are extremely pleased with Sperling Car Service. There's a reason this company has a consistent 5-star review rating and that is they put emphasis on customer satisfaction. I was also pleased with their pricing and the fact that they include the gratuity into the final quote so I am not fumbling around at the end of the drive to give the driver a tip. If you are looking for reliable car service, this is the company you want to use. We were really blown away by our overall experience with Sperling and I think you will too!

Thankfully, I documented everything from my first call to inquire about their services until the end of my experience with Carefree Limousine up until this exact moment. As confirmed to me by Peter, this is a husband-and-wife business: Jayne seems to answer the phones and Peter drives. BUT, I couldn't in good conscious not say anything. This is my experience: On Sept 4, 2025 at 4:42pm EST, I called Carefree Limousine. Jayne quoted me $150 per hour, plus an extra hour ($150) for travel from North Jersey. We needed 6 hours, so the total was $1,050. She asked for a $150 non-refundable deposit and promised an invoice/confirmation. At 5:04pm EST, after confirming with the Mother of the Bride (MOB), I called back and confirmed for 18 passengers (up from 16). Jayne said that was fine. I sent the deposit and received an emailed invoice at 5:49pm EST confirming: 6-hour party bus rental: $900 balance due at pickup $150 "one extra hour positioning fee" Cancellation policy: deposit non-refundable; all cancellations within 24 hrs non-refundable; changes must be 2 weeks in advance. On Sept 12 (day before pickup, 4:45pmEST) Jayne called to confirm. We were still at 18 people. On Sept 13 by 3pm EST, Peter arrived with the 20-passenger bus. MOB mentioned two extra guests would be able to make it (bringing us to 20). Peter said it was fine--just no more than 20, since that's the limit. He had me sign two documents: 1. A verbal acknowledgment of total cost and deposit paid. 2. A form outlining extra fees (e.g., $200 vomiting fee). I asked three times if I'd get a copy by email and was ignored, so I photographed the documents with Peter's acknowledgment. At NO POINT was any "extra passenger" fee mentioned. At our second stop (around 6:20pmEST), Peter pulled me aside and said we'd be charged $60 each for the 2 extra people. I was confused since we'd been quoted HOURLY, not per person, and the bus capacity was 20 people. He told me to call and ask Jayne. When I did, in hopes to clear things up, she, in my opinion, immediately became defensive, cut me off repeatedly, threatened "those two people can Uber home," and hung up on me. I was sober at the time (choosing not to drink to ensure everything went smoothly), and this felt like they purposely waited until the ride was underway to spring hidden charges--hoping guests would be intoxicated and compliant. MOB overheard and called Jayne herself from my phone to resolve things. It seems Jayne treated her the same way--talking over her, and interrupting, MOB only called because she wanted to ensure we would have a guaranteed ride home. (we were 1hr+ from home) Ultimately, the MOB paid the additional $120 To be clear: If they had been upfront about charging for additional passengers, that would've been one thing. The issue is the lack of transparency and the unprofessional, hostile way it was handled. We paid what they demanded, but I felt taken advantage of. Based on this experience, I would NEVER use Carefree Limousine again and cannot recommend them. This review is so others are FULLY aware of what to expect.
