Kalakaua is more than just a road, it's the shopping and restaurant mecca of Waikiki! Kalakaua…read more runs right along the beach with shops, restaurants and touristy gift shops on both sides of the street.
Shops run the gamut, from high end luxury designer boutiques like the flagship, 3 story Chanel store on the north end. And Prada, Gucci, Miu Miu, Bottega Venetia, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Christian DiorCartier and others along this section known as Luxury Row. This end of Kalakaua is the Rodeo Drive of Waikiki. There is no state sales tax so those who want designer items without the additional sales tax, this is your place to shop.
For those not into designer items, no worries. There are stores at every price level. Macys, Crocs, Sunglass Hut, lots of surf and beach clothing, touristy gift shops, sandals, t-shirts and everything else you can think of. On eveey corner there is an ABC store that has food, cold water, alcohol, wine, clothing, beach gear, snacks, sunscreen, gift items, fruit and more.
Dispersed in between are restaurants - mostly casual and chains like California Pizza Kitchen and The Cheesecake Factory which always have a line. Plus some local Hawaiian chains like Duke's, Roy's, and Eggs'n Things.
Several Hotels are on this strip, each with their own restaurants, bars and gift shops. Feel free to wander in and out as you please.
On the south end it's quieter and easier to park near the zoo. The beaches down this way also have less people. On the north end is the Waikiki Beach Walk with even more shops and restaurants.
All along Kalakaua, you are just steps from the beautiful beach as the road runs parallel. Kalakaua is crowded all hours - morning, day and night. Tourists and local surfers everywhere.
Parking is tough so if you can, park by the Zoo at Kapiolani Park. It's free but it does fill up but people come and go. I usually walk because I owned a condo a block from the beach, but if I was dressed up and in heals, I would park at Ross and then buy something on the way out and they would validate for free! Waikiki Shopping Plaza also offers one hour free with validation.
People always wondered why I had a condo in Waikiki because it's so crowded. During the day, I knew the beaches where only locals would go so it was very peaceful. Or I would drive 20 minutes to Kailua and Lanikai Beach, the most beautiful beach anywhere. But at night, I liked to be able to leave my car behind and walk to bars and restaurants. Same with grabbing coffee in the morning.
Kalakaua Avenue is where you can find most anything, it's a beautiful palm tree line street with views of the ocean. Lots of people and I always felt safe.
