Hands down the best pizza I have had in Italy so far. The Caprese pizza is my new favorite. Prices are cheap for such good food!

Where to begin? We loved this place so much we went back a second time. I cannot say enough. It…read morebreaks my heart that such a gem is hidden in rundown Portici, where most will never get to experience it. Luigi, the owner(?), was the epitome of Italian hospitality! On our first visit, we arrived far too early for an Italian dinner (shortly after 7PM). We were tired after a long day and did not want to go later. It was immediately clear that as American tourists, we were an unusual sight. The menu did not have a word of English and it seemed most of the waiters did not speak much English. Since the restaurant was nearly empty that early, Luigi doted on us, sending us complimentary antipasti. We were delighted with the whole experience. We did not order a secondo that night, as we were not particularly hungry, but the gnocchi alla Sorrentina was phenomenal. With that memory fresh in our minds, we decided to return two nights later. This time we were eating on Italian time, and when we walked in around 9PM, the place was packed. Yet we had no trouble getting a table. Luigi recognized us immediately and welcomed us warmly. We didn't expect his attention since the place was so busy, but we were blown away by how much time he spent with us. When the power went out suddenly, the food kept coming out without major issues. Extremely professional. The personable service was the best part of this experience, but the food was wonderful, too. The bruschetta was fantastic and we very much enjoyed the bucatini alla Don Salvatore. To be honest, the misto di carne alla brace were not anything special (not bad, just a bit lacking in flavor) but when everything else was so special, we were not disappointed! And I haven't even mentioned the prices! We couldn't believe how inexpensive everything was. My only regret is not trying the pizza that was being made in a brick oven right inside the entrance. Portici is not much of a destination, so sadly, most people will miss this spot. But if you are traveling through on the Circumvesuviana train, it is worth a special stop at Portici via Libertà to eat here. The restaurant is only about half a kilometer from the train station, and if your time there is anything like ours, it will be unforgettable.

But the staff was friendly and we were able to get a seat without too much of a wait. I'm giving this restaurant 5 stars primarily because the offer something very unique. A vegetarian Ragu with seitan. This place is known for great ragu, which is meat based. But they offer a vegitarian version that was very good. I got a mushroom pasta dish that was very tatsy and filling. I could only eat half due to how filling it was. My wife got an Aperol spritz and I got an italian beer. If we were back in the area we'd likely stop back in to rty other options on their large menu.

He even had some sample dry pastas with him to physically show me as a little demonstration, which I thought was really nice and appreciated very much. I ended up ordering the fresh scialatielli with ragu and ricotta (€13.50), which was simple yet tasty. The fresh pasta was cooked very well with a classic preparation. They also gave a generous amount of parmesan on the side. I also tried the fresh lemonade, which was very lemony and slightly fizzy for additional refreshment. The place is somewhat small inside but I was able to get a table without any wait. The kitchen is right next to the seating area, so it's kind of cool to see the cooks right there. Overall, Tandem is a great place for pasta dishes with very friendly service.
