I came in today because I had heard they had good menudo. It was just ok. Needed more chile, it was kind of blah. After I added my lemon the color was pretty light. At least the tripe was clean, that what tipped to three stars. My problem was that it was a very small sized large for $14. My husband ordered 3 asada tacos which came with cilantro and onion on top and salsas on the side. They were just ok. The meat was good but tacos overall were extremely dry even after adding salsa. The tacos were $3, so not overpriced but we won't be back There is no indoor seating. Last time I ate here was when their building was facing south. Located on the corner of First and McKenzie. My fiancé and I was driving by and decided to pick up dinner. Outside stand, tables outside but currently only available for take out. They don't enforce mask wear/ social distancing. Customers come and order without masks as well as not keeping their distance. Arrived around 6pm we ordered 2 carne asada tacos, 2 tripas and 1 carne asada burrito. We requested the tripas to be crunchy. The workers were nice and they said they can cook it the way we requested. We waited about 10 mins for our order and was told that everything was in the bag. Got home and and was alittle disappointed to see that the tripas was cooked the way had requested, it wasn't crunchy at all. Not to mention the asada alittle plain and dry. I grew up eating here. It's been changing so much over the years but one thing that has remained consistent is their customer service which is so nice and their food is so delicious. I'm not gonna lie, in the summer it's so hot but people are willing to sit out there because of how delicious their food is. A tip is if youre trying to feed your family buy the meat by the lb, its cost about $8 for carne asada lb (cooked ready for tacos), only bad thing is you dont get tortillas. Their carnitas are average but better then many mexican restaurants like a good 7/10(my family are experts on making carnitas recipe passed on from generations, so i know my carnitas). The tacos are big so like 3 tacos & your full. They also got menudo on the weekend & its very popular & busy on the weekend mornings. They also have chicharon tacos & many variety meats by the lb. Their burritos,tortas are . I woulda gave them 5 but they stop giving you free chicharones & tortillas.. I suggest they should market themselves better on social media, have daily specials & maybe them play some music make it young happy people friendly. This place is great but they need make it way more welcoming throw some love into it. Love the renovations. And a great price point if you don't want to spend a lot of your hard earned cash! The chicharron is the best...and at only $1 a bag, it's a nice little crispy treat. My buddy arent lightweights when it comes to stuffing our faces and we were able to split it comfortably. 3 pounds of burrito ( probably more ) for 10 dollars. You have your choice of 3 different meats for the burrito. I suppose you could do just one meat but we wanted it all. Don't be fooled by the listing, Don Pepe is a taco stand on first street between Belmont and Tulare. At first look, Don Pepe's can look a little scary, it's a white taco stand with bars around the windows and barb wire fence if i'm not mistaken. I am a self proclaimed taco snob. It takes the right stuff to make a memorable taco and this place offers, in my opinion, one of the best tacos al pastor in Fresno. I will make the 15 minute drive regularly just for my taco fix. I almost feel like a really good taco requires a really bad area. This place is situated off of first street, but in the heart of a residential area. I don't recommend going there after dark. The parking lot isn't quite paved, or looks like it used to be at one time. But all that aside, if you are into going on an adventure to find good food, try this spot. Rules for first timers: 1. get it to go. They have a fenced in patio, but it's a little scary. 2. order the salsa on the side. Their red salsa has a serious heat factor... not just hot, make you cry for your mother hot. 3. be adventerous and order 1 thing you've never heard of or tried. If you like real mexican food, you'll probably love it! 4. Get at least one al pastor taco 5. They have pepsi in the bottle, which is a throwback bonus 6. Finally, you get a little magical bonus with every order, don't be scared.. each order comes with a sample of their home made pork rinds. They can be very hard so be prepared for the crunch/break your teath factor, but they are delicious!! They have a pork rind taco, that when combined with their green salsa something magical happens! Had a excellent chili verde burrito. I order a large one with light pico de gallo and even with the language barrier the got it right. You have to sit outside on concrete picnic tables so I wouldn't recommend them on a hot afternoon. My food was ethnic, not much served from a can, good home style Mexican food.
