This place was no different. Small restaurant in the the small village of Saint Emilion outside of Bordeaux. Adorable. Great view. Delicious cheese Delicious wine. Friendly service even though we asked for something they don't serve during lunch. So why remove a star this time. I have to differentiate these wonderful places and my only complaint is you have a menu on the street but aren't serving everything on the menu at that time. It's odd. The menu on the street advertised a plate of farmed cheese but that was only a dinner option and we were there during lunch. Why advertise it then? Anyway, be forewarned and remember the current "carte" is what they give you at the table-not what they advertise at the street. Nevertheless, they did have a charcuterie board and they gave it to us with only cheese, and they offered it-we didn't even ask. You know what? 5 stars. I changed it before posting. I don't care if the rest of my review no longer makes sense. There's no reason to take a star away. Great cheese, great wine, great views, friendly service that went out of their way to accommodate Americans who wanted something not on the menu. 5 stars it is.

My husband and I stayed at the Logis de la Cadene hotel (*excellent*) and scheduled a dinner here…read morefor our second night in St. Emilion. This was one part of our overall honeymoon, and we had heard excellent things about the restaurant. Of all the fancy/Michelin restaurants that we visited during our trip to France, I felt like this menu was the best. We did the 7-course menu, and every item was astounding. The overall meal was filling, but not pants-busting. The service was very earnest and attentive. As we do not speak French, the servers were able to tell us what we were eating, but not go into extreme detail--just a note if that is an issue for you. We had no problem understanding what we were eating. I knocked the rating by a star for one reason alone: the pushy sommelier. I understand that being a sommelier/lead server is a big job. I also understand that sommeliers can have strong opinions on which wines we should be drinking to best accompany the meal. When we were first seated, he asked if we wanted to start with a glass of champagne. We said yes, but I joked to my husband that we might regret it. We did -- he didn't provide the cost to us (or any of the other tables around us), and it was 30 Euro PER GLASS. An addition of 60 Euro to the final bill was kind of a bummer, even though I mentally prepared for it. Is it my fault for not asking the cost? Maybe. But I think an offer like that as folks are getting seated makes it sound like it is on the house. 30 Euro/glass should be enough for the sommelier to indicate what the cost might be before it is served. Also, since we had visited a couple other expensive restaurants earlier in our trip, we had decided ahead of time not to do the wine pairings for this meal, and instead order a less expensive bottle of wine to share. The sommelier turned his nose up at all of our questions about wines under 100 Euro and at one point said to us that "it would be more fun to try wines from this section" (which was a 200 Euro price point). It made me upset that there were affordable wines in the wine book and he made us feel bad for ordering any of them. If this is a Michelin-star restaurant, then all the wines in the wine book should be good. Why else would they be stored/served onsite? So, we loved our stay at the hotel. We thought the overall staff was excellent (especially the kind woman who greeted us each morning at breakfast). But I would argue that a single employee can make or break the dining experience, and we were disappointed with our interaction with the sommelier.
